Re:dear music/ movie industry:
Were these content publishers only able to publish these intellectual works for 17 years, it's true that many wouldn't take a chance at producing works such as Waterworld or Lord of the Rings. The money spent on these productions might take an exceptional amount of time to recoup, much less profit from.
Really? LoTR has more than re-couped its production costs. And by my watch they'd still have at least 11 more years to cash in if copyright was limited to 17 years.

As much as Waterworld doesn't deserve to make money (IMHO), it did too. Of course there'd be only 5 more years to collect on that gem.

Re:Make regular sex mandatory, like exercise
I think you missed the joke entirely. It was a movie quote:

Physical re-action
The only way to completely secure a computer is to turn it off.
Instead of paying $39.95/year for a virus scanner license, $29.99/year for a firewall subscription, and $9.98/year for a spam filter, I think it would be far more effective for everyone to pool their money and hire hitmen to track down the 'bad people' and do 'bad things' to them. I bet you'd see the need for more secure computing go down. As it is now, they're not afraid of anything.

Marsellus: What now? Let me tell you what now. I'ma call a coupla hard, pipe-hittin' niggers, who'll go to work on the homes here with a pair of pliers and a blow torch. You hear me talkin', hillbilly boy? I ain't through with you by a damn sight. I'ma get medieval on your ass.
Now that's what I'm talking about. -

CNN HQ Stormed By Elite GNAA Operatives, Classified 9/11 Information Broadcast
pagga (GNAP) - Manchester, AfghanistanFollowing a covert infiltration of their Tel-Aviv headquarters by a crack team of elite GNAA agents, Zionist news organization CNN today publicly declassified top-secret information regarding the September 11 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, information which was until now actively supressed by the Zionist Occupied Governments of the West. Thousands of jewish viewers across America choked on their evening halvah (muslim babies) as, in a primetime broadcast, Paula Zahn (herself a latent jew) was forced at dongpoint to reveal the awful truth behind the 9/11 attacks which the rest of the civilized (read: non-judaic) world has long suspected: Jews Did WTC.
Fast-forwarding past the 1080p CP on the greasy HD-DVD handed to them by bedpan, the CNN production team played back the devastating GNAA-compiled footage whilst Paula Zahn held back a rectal prolapse to present their findings. Irrefutable proof from highly credible sources (such as regarded public information portals jewsdidwtc.com & Encyclopedia Dramatica) was disclosed in order to finally put an end to the debate. In the interests of equal representation, a token jew was present for the post-footage discussion, together with a panel of gay niggers.
In the unlikely event that you missed this historic broadcast, it has been archived at JewTube.
Want to know more? See the proof for yourself @ http://www.jewsdidwtc.com and Encyclopedia Dramatica.

Spiderman has sucked plenty of times beforeIn all fairness, Spiderman has been dodgy in MANY formats. Anyone remember the 70's TV series? How about Spidey Super Stories?
Frankly, I never even liked the new movies. The first was was so lame and cliched it actually made me physically ill to watch (my girlfriend at the time made me take her, basically). I felt most sorry for Willem Defoe, who has been in so many great films. I swear to God, he ACTUALLY says "I'LL GET YOU, SPIDERMAN!" and shakes his fist in the air at one point. Sad.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who thinks that Dawkins, Harris, et al. are complete douches.
:DI've been following this thread for about 10 or so posts now, and I'd like to thank slashdotsyncline/Scott for answering our many questions. It's given me quite a few ideas for several personal projects (designing virtual worlds--I'm quite interested in making them more immersive/believable).
And, to those ends, I have a question for syncline: Could you describe the process used to collect the fossils once they were discovered? You went into it briefly in this post.
And for fun: As a member of your state geological survey, what would you do if you encountered hyper-evolving alien life at a meteor crash site?
Thanks once again for your help, Scott!

Re:studios ... plowed through ... entire backlog??
Part of the problem is some studios have forgotten they even own the rights to some movies. Electric Dreams is one such movie, the only DVD copies being unofficial copies made from VHS releases. Some are only available in other countries and/or out of print such as Prime Risk. Flash Gordon has been long in need of a US re-release. And I want to see Bruce Campbell and Walter Koenig in Moontrap again, and have ever since the similar Virus (1999) came out. I'm sure Terminal Entry is as bad as I remember it, but I'd like to see it again. And where else but in Deadly Friend can you see an old woman get her head flattened by a basketball?
Nevermind the TV series that have yet to be considered for release like Whiz Kids (had a early crossover with Simon & Simon, being released on DVD, in its third episode), or even TV 101 with a young Matt LeBlanc. Even more recent shows have yet to come out that have some public interest, like Strange Luck. But with the original series now coming out on DVD, there's a small hope that Mission: Impossible (1988) will get released.
I don't expect Drive will come out as it was canceled after four episodes with two more maybe being aired this summer. I'm glad I decided to record them in 720p on my computer. Mid-season and late-tail season series premieres look to be good hunting ground for content that may never get published on durable media.

Solar Crisis
It's a personal crisis for all the scientists and publishers who have to go back and change their numbers, then re-interpret the results. There's a trickle-down effect to changing your hard-coded constants.
I hope it doesn't suck as much as this crisis. -
Re:Surely this must be a joke...
Keep in mind here I was trying to note other examples of copyrighted works (not "generic IP") where it would be considered absurd to follow a similar practice. I don't see why recorded music has such a special exception to copyright law when other items covered under the exact same statute simply don't apply.
There have been numerous attempts by many people to get the Walt Disney Corporation to release "The Song of the South" on VHS or DVD in the USA. It has been released in Europe (and subsequently pulled), but never in America. And through some "pirate" video connections. If compulsory licensing were available for the motion picture industry, this is clearly one movie that would have many people willing to pay the fee and get the movie over the objections of Disney... and one of the reasons why such a licensing scheme will never happen for movies.
This is also one way surprisingly that the MPAA and the RIAA are going in different directions, even though there are many similarities between the two organizations. -

Ahem
Then lots of years of news reports and gimmicky comedies followed (Chaplin anyone? I'm not sure his work is Oscar worthy but..).
Chaplin won a regular Oscar, two honorary Oscars, and a further three nominations, along with numerous other honours.
Chaplin wrote, directed and starred in highly critically acclaimed films like The Great Dictator and Modern Times, both of which are in the IMDB's top 250 films of all time.
You can't dismiss Chaplin as gimmicky comedy, that's just not fair.

Linux client?
I know i might be asking for too much... but does anyone knows if this gem of a game will ever have its own linux version? I LOVE Soldat, but have mixed sucess trying to run it under Wine.
Anyway, it's well worth a go if you never tried it before. It's not mentioned anywhere in the story, so, for those who haven't tried it, it's fast paced online deathmatch game, a-la-UT... in 2D, sporting "realistic" weapons (most borrowed from Counterstrike). It's easy to play, has very low hardware requirements, and its' gameplay is devastatingly addictive. That, and you can't beat bots that lay Arnie movie quotes every time they frag you :) -
Ah, Office - the Brazil of software
Although I keep defaulting back to MS Office - Open Office just isn't quite enough and isn't quite interchangable enough with people using Office - I still hate the the damned thing. It's like software designed by Terry Gilliam.
I hate the way it formats stuff whether I want it or not. I hate that it automatically changes URLs and e-mail addresses into links, even though I'm creating print documents. I REALLY hate that copied text from elsewhere is pasted in with whatever format it had elsewhere, not with the format of the text on the page that I'm editing.
And I hate that it is invariably difficult or impossible to turn this crap off.
I sincerely fear every new release of MS Office specifically because I need to beat it into submission to make it behave as if I'm in charge.
I don't even know what a "ribbon" is, but I'm sure that I'll hate that too. -
Re:studios ... plowed through ... entire backlog??
Hmm.
Hamburger: The Motion Picture, Stewardess School:
If you enjoyed this title, our database also recommends:
Bikini Drive-In, H.O.T.S., L.E.T.H.A.L. Ladies: Return to Savage Beach
Are you sure the movie companies aren't doing us all a favour by not releasing those 2 on DVD.??
On the other hand, you do have a point about copyright. The studios are more likely to provide a 'burn on demand' system though. -

GNAA Announces Cleansing Of The Star Trek Gene Pool
Impi - Black Ops, South AfricaIt is with great regret that we in the glorious GNAA were called to arms against a revered institution known as Star Trek. Impi, while in training as a high priest in the popular religious cult scientology, was approached by William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy to contract the services of the Black Ops wing of the GNAA.
Both Shatner and Nimoy, on which the Star Trek franchise and legend were built, expressed serious concern with regard to the affront of a little known "television station" called G4TV.
"Star Trek prides itself on boldly going where no man has gone before. Not boldly sitting on your fat ass and playing computer games and talking about it in a failed IRC channel!" said Shatner. "G4TV is taking the very ethos of Star Trek and perverting it for profit. They have targeted a segment of the population known as Fatmerica. Their actions in sanctioning such an event promote obesity and diabetes within our youth and we as Star Trek representatives do not want to be associated with this sentiment."
Leonard Nimoy was instrumental in crafting the attack on #startrek20 on the IRC network irc.gamesurge.net. Using an exploit that allowed a redirect from the www.g4tv.com to the infamous Last Measure, many fatties were tricked into being Last Measured.
"They turned on us," said Neal Tiles, president of G4TV. "It was like stampede at a buffet, there was nothing we could do. People were ping timing out all over the place. Mothers were calling the station asking why their children were looking at gay porno. It was a nightmare. Our moderator of the channel, Ravager|CH, tried valiantly to keep things together, but he was eventually g-lined due to massive complaints against the channel."
The overwhelming success of the operation was reflected by the failed moderator Ravager|CH own words: [23:37] <Ravager|CH> another ruined night..

Frickin' Laser Beams
Any comment on effectiveness against mirrors or reflective clothing?
They mention "airborne particulate" as an issue, but nothing about what they intend to do about it. Perhaps a device to vaporize the area's water supply?

Into the Unknown: The Circle
In fact, theorists say one variety of wormhole wraps back onto itself, so that it leads not to another universe, but back to its own entrance.
I'm expecting others to beat me to referencing The Black Hole and Dr. Hans Reinhardt's line, "In, through, and beyond," or even Farscape and Rigel's bored, "Wormhole. Normal space. Wormhole." So instead, and considering slashdot's current technical problems, how about something more obscure.
Wasn't this an episode of the original The Tomorrow People, except that transit time felt like it took much longer than it really did, whereas the reality of time dilation would likely be the reverse?
