Portable Win32 apps
I keep a CD of Kanotix around at all times. It's a Knoppix variant, but I find that Kanotix has a cleaner look and feel. It's also better for a HD install, since it uses only Debian-unstable packages instead of the mix of testing and unstable that Knoppix uses.
However, I'm going to my parents' home for the Xmas holidays, so I'll be using their WinXP machine. I happened to have a USB flash drive lying around, so I packed it with portable FOSS Win32 packages from , including FireFox, Thunderbird, GIMP, OpenOffice etc. These packages install everything, including dlls, into an application folder and are executed directly from the USB drive. The added benefit is that you can copy these packages from machine to machine simply by copying the application folders; there is no need to run an installer every time or alter the Registry. -
Re:Yes, Linux on desktops, & Laptops & pdaWhat's more important to define this is what exactly you mean by "desktop linux"
I mean a fully functional multi-purpose computing/entertainment/communication/creation device. For some people Windows XP fits this definition with the addition of a few software titles. For me and mine Linux fits this definition and fits it better and cheaper.
if you define "desktop linux" as being able to play native 3D games reliably, then desktop linux is almost entirely a hobbiest system still
I said fully right. What I don't expect is it to play every Windows DirectX10 game the day it comes out. Eventually, odds are good, unless it is a MS title, we'll get it running. Better still we convince the publishers that we BUY Linux Binaries, I bought UT2004 and Quake4 and Doom3. I'd buy more. Wine takes care of the rest.
The simple fact remains that other than installing a linux machine, not much more has become easier.
Spoken like someone who doesn't recall how truly difficult everything was not so long ago in linux. We've come a long way, really really fast. I find it better. It may not be perfect but niether are the alternatives, I trust the forward momentum in this lane. Not only that I get to help if I want.
Some people really do just like to turn on their machine and find it works. Windows offers that, and still will for some time over linux.
http://kanotix.com/ Just works, off the CD, I wonder if the Vista DVD will be like that. The laptop I refer to in the parent post runs it 24/7.
So to sum it up, Nvidia makes a Linux Desktop, ATi breaks it.

Does a good job - needs more testing and funding.
I have successfully installed and tested it on most recent Debian Sid/Kanotix with kernel 2.6.17 - http://kanotix.com/. Creating and deleting folders (even in root directory), adding more than 100 files to a folder and deleting them again, removing some 100 temporary files, copying a 1,7Gb sized iso-file and moving it around - all that was possible whithout any error. A very promising initiative from a developer to get things moving again in this mine field of myths. As he is a true open mind he contacted first the existing ntfsprogs-project and handed all his work over to them - just a pitty that the head developer there recently started to work for Apple, and announced that he is not interested in getting a solution for Linux out, before he finished the same for his new employer next year. I would be more than happy to support the ntfs-3g developer getting his own project running, and also finding sponsors in order to solve this nasty hardware problem. Anybody interested in helping?

Re: Ubuntu...why is it so special?
If you are okay with Debian unstable, use Kanotix http://kanotix.com/index.php?&newlang=eng
It is by far the easiest distro I have ever used... over and above Ubuntu, Fedora, Suse or Mandrake. It almost auto configured everything, and I have a hard time thinking about using anything else... it's just too dead simple. -
Re:One good reason NOT to buy Windows Vista:
Every computer I have has a windows sticker, except for one that I "threw together" myself. I still put Windows in it, because I use that sometimes (offline, of course), and have desktop icons for Debian 2.2 and Mandrake 8 linux. (Double click on one, and loadlin takes you there..)
The Vista computers are supposed to be powerhouses, and I would like to someday run Kanotix linux on one, and see how that goes.
I understand that the manufacturers are charged about $40.00 for windows, so that is all that is added to the cost. Nobody hardly wants to make PC's without Windows preinstalled, anyway. There are some, but they tend to be low priced, (and out-of-date) boxes, aimed at buyers that only want to spend a small sum for their PC. Would like to note here that the PC Walmart offers in the stores comes with 512 MB of RAM now, apparently needed to run XP at a decent pace. So, we get the Windows boxes, our only problem is getting all the hardware to work in Linux. It's a waste of time keeping a Windows box updated, there is no end to it. Run Linux, especially a livecd linux, and be done with it. -
Re:When will it be "safe" to use?I've used Reiser4 for my root partition about half the time over the last year (I was trying out different distros but now I'm back to Debian =). No problems, no mysterious files appearing or disappearing, seems rock solid. It's only anecdotal evidence but with all the other posters saying the same thing...
Kanotix (a Knoppix spin-off, 100% debian-unstable compatible, I don't know whether Knoppix itself also offers Reiser4) offers Reiser4 out of the box if you want to try it out without recompiling your kernel and shuffling your root partition around. Launch the graphical installer, choose your installation settings, save the settings to a file, open the config file and set the root filesystem to reiser4 (it's documented in the config file it's just not offered in the graphical installer), restart the graphical installer, load the config file. Much easier and faster than my last stunt with vanilla debian.

Re:I get a simular feeling maintaining my Linux boKanotix http://kanotix.com/files/kanotix/
#1 Takes 15 minutes to install the OS from LiveCD.
#2 apt-get install kdevelop3*done. You'll thank me later. Pretty much any Debian will suit your needs, and get you out of this 10hr maintainability problem.
Course you could be one of those sadistic Gentoo users.Did ya try here?http://www.kdevelop.org/index.html?filename=
3 .2/download.html10Hrs, Wow. I have only hit this mark creating/transcoding DVDs. Although Trolltech's QT can be a bitch to compile on a slow machine.

Re:Install ease?
Twain meet Kanotix. Why would you want to do it? Well how about if you actually want to know if your hardware will work with a distro without having to install it!

Re:MEPIS
apt-get dist-upgrade MEPIS is NOT recommended. Also as it is based on testing it generally will not have security support (unless Mepis does their own which I have never heard of). If you really want a quick desktop/laptop Debian based distro without compatibility problems and with security support use Kanotix which is based on Debian sid/unstable. Some people dist-upgrade it daily.

In the meantime ...
If you have a suitable machine you can grab kanotix 64 and try out a full 64 bit OS from a cd, and install it if you want to! Unlimited support incidents come from the simple link to the Kanotix irc channel from the desktop or a quick trip to the forum. Donations go by Paypal to "donate the_@_here kanotix.com" so know you know what to do with your $12!

Re:Simple answer ...
i would rather phone ms then build my own linux distro. your best option would be http://kanotix.com/
:) enjoy -
Re:Make it boot from a NTFS drive (possible)
Kanotix already includes this since it's BHX release and is essentially a debian-sid liveCD with some residual vague semblence to Knoppix. All you have to do is either put the iso image under KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX.ISO on any partition or drive and use the cheatcode fromiso, or you can use fromiso=somedir/K*FIX2.iso or even fromhd=/dev/hda1 fromiso=somedir/K*.iso and of course Knoppix uses grub to boot from cd anyway so it is much easier to construct your own grub menu for it.

Re:I like the Knoppix CD
Captive NTFS should be in Knoppix 3.7 (latest version from dec. last year) otherwise try Kanotix, another wonderfull knoppix derivate with an even better hardware detection that knoppix itself.

Re:Knoppix - a lifesaver
Dude, it's the freaking WWW. You should have implicit permission to link to the front page of ANY site, and there's a good argument that if you put anything in the publicly accessible space, then it should be able to be linked to.
Seriously, grow some cojones and a brain, and realize that they might WANT you to link to them. -
Kanotix - a knoppix related distro
saw this on a linux magazine just the other day.
yet another knoppix related distro named
Kanotix. Supposedly to be based on Debian unstable with more updated packages and more frequent releases.
the packages are supposed to be compiled optimized for the i586 architecture, so the distro wouldnt be suitable for lower-end systems.
screenshots here
current release highlights:
Kernel 2.6.9 with many patches incl. suspend2
ACPI and DMA enabled by default (can be disabled with acpi=off respectively nodma)
i586 optimization - not for use with older CPUs!
128 MB RAM required, 256 MB RAM recommended
AVM Fritz!Card DSL support
Eagle USB DSL support
KDE 3.3.1
OpenOffice 1.1.2
Captive 1.1.5
ALSA 1.0.6a
GRUB boot loader for CD start - ideal for rescue in command line mode
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool in the extra menu of the boot loader
