QR codes?
there must be some way to do QR codes
http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ can do it 160 characters at a time, but that seems really inconvenient -
The tip of the iceberg
The ability to give bank computers AIDS is just the start. What happens when terrorists discover them?

Re:Taking Bets!
What, you think that because you have a picture of a 1-dimensional bar code which reads: 10 00 00 00 00 01, that *no* bar code format can store useful information directly in the bar code?
By that logic, if I write '10 00 00 00 00 01' using the English alphabet, no string of text can store useful information.
I don't have to put a link to a site in a QR code. I can put quite a bit of raw, plain-text in a QR code instead. Doing it that way means you don't have to do a database lookup to determine what information the QR code is 'storing', because the data is *all local*.
Here's an example for you: Link to a QR Code generator.
The site that generated that QR code limits itself to 160 characters (for free), but QR codes can be used to store significantly more than that (4k of plain-text, for example.)

Does anyone have a QR code to a Rick Roll?
Like this?: Rick Roll

Re:Fragmentation? No.
Exactly. If there were one thing I could explain to Android app developers, its to put a big qrcode link to their app's Market entry on their website. That one thing lets me download their app quickly and easily while sitting in front of my PC.

Re:I was just thinking about this
Stephen King has said Clint Eastwood's 'Man with No Name' was his model for Roland Deschain. Obviously unless they do some insane CGI that's not going to happen. My guess would be a little known actor would be the best pick for the role.
You know, I'd be okay if they did a CGI Clint to make him younger, and used motion capture with the real Clint. I don't know if they could really pull it off, but it would be a worthwhile experiment.
This man IS Roland. Who else has that granite weather-chiseled face?

Re:Tested it
> The nokia barcode reader required the neighbouring codes to be at almost the full width of the screen
Instead of the Nokia reader, try Kaywa reader: http://reader.kaywa.com/ For what I have tested it is very fast(pretty much instant) and works from rather big angles as well.
The fact that the microsoft tag is in color does seem to limit its use to color print only. Also I wonder how well it works if the colors are not perfectly aligned as is often possible for example in newspaper print.

Re:Barcode Maybe you're referring to QR Code?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_Code
"A QR Code is a matrix code (or two-dimensional bar code) created by Japanese corporation Denso-Wave in 1994. The "QR" is derived from "Quick Response", as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed. QR Codes are common in Japan where they are currently the most popular type of two dimensional code.
Although initially used for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing, QR Codes are now used in a much broader context spanning both commercial tracking applications as well as convenience-oriented applications aimed at mobile phone users. QR Codes storing addresses and URLs may appear in magazines, on signs, buses, business cards or just about any object that a user might need information about. A user having a camera phone equipped with the correct reader software can scan the image of the QR Code causing the phone's browser to launch and redirect to the programmed URL."
But, in the good 'ol US of A, many stores would KICK OUT patrons who openly comparison shop. In Japan, it's the norm, otherwise QR would have flopped, I think. Even on the street, I was handed adverts having QR codes on them. Makes life a HELLUVA lot nicer to not have to type in or use a search engine when a QR will do either, and quickly.
More URLs:

DENSO WAVE INCORPORATED

But, even USPS & UPS and such entities use them, too, seemingly to replace get around damaged bar codes. IIRC, QR Codes are multiply (plee) redundant, so damaging part of it still does not prevent extraction of information. -
Re:"wants to"?it's not so new, there are many barcode reader apps:
kaywa reader that has also a web page to generate barcodes and supports many mobile phones. activeprint glass is another one, quickmark another, or the already mentioned semacode.
though: typing in a phone number or URL is still faster and more reliable.
oh yes, i love to type URL's like http://mobile.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/12/02/0644236 on my phone... :)
BTW you can not only encode phone numbers, URL's or text, you can also encode vCard's that can be imported by scanning the barcode. it's even beeing used to encode images! -

Re:Excellent!!
>This means my cell phone in 2009 will finally be able to read those QR graphics on
>Japanese web pages written in 2004!
[rant]
Yes but that probably only because you haven't botherd to DL the QR-reader to your phone.
Try www.quickmark.com.tw or reader.kaywa.com as starters.
[/rant]
More importantly; now that we westerns hopefully will caught up using 2D-barcodes, about five years late, we can start to PUBLISH and USE codes in ads, displays etc. Remember that Denso with their QR-code are only one of several manufacturers of 2D-codes. However QR are the defacto standard in Japan. -

Re:Better implementation: SemaCode
Sounds more like you're finding faults for no reason. It's a very good idea. It's being used already. Thus a good idea hasn't failed miserably.
"let's see here $1.00 to process the image remotely because no cell phone can"
Wrong: http://reader.kaywa.com/ is a free downloadable Java reader for your mobile. There are others, too.
"$1.00 data charge for access the website to buy tickets from"
What sucky websites do you visit ?
"$5.00 random extra charge because your using cingular's/Verizon's/sprints special web buy service"
Use a better provider; the plan attached to my mobile gives me free net access.
"another $1.00 worth of data rate charges because you entered your credit card wrong."
We can't help that you're a numpty. :)
One such use of semacodes is http://www.semapedia.org/ , whereby people can print links to Wikipedia articles.
eg: If you're a tourist in a foreign country, wouldn't it be nice to be able to access a full page of information about something that's potentially translated into your language?
