Andreas "Dre" Pour writes "Short on the heels of the remarkably successful launch of the KDE 3 series with a very stable and complete KDE 3.0 last month, the KDE Project has announced the immediate availability of KDE 3.0.1. While primarily a translation release, it also squashes some bugs, including some minor security issues with the HTML engine. Read the (relatively short) announcement and the fairly complete ChangeLog for more info. Binary packages are already available from the stalwart KDE packagers at Compaq Tru64, Conectiva Linux, Mandrake Linux and SuSE Linux. As always, we hope you enjoy the latest and greatest KDE!"

friday2k writes "There is a nice Article on Newsforge describing how the German Government moves ahead on looking into Free Software solutions for government agencies. And you need a standard, secure, email client for this." Basically, they are funding some good secure e-mail - but making sure that it works with stuff like Kmail.

Andreas "Dre" Pour wrote to say that KDE's long-awaited version 1.1 is out, and asks you to check the dot for some more details. He also points to this temporary fixed-for-Netscape announcement as well as the official announcement. Dre continues: "The dot link includes commentary by me (including a call for Open Source office developers to collaborate on filters!)"

Philippe Fremy writes: "After the Poll on what kde needs in priority suggests speed is an area of improvement, Core kde developer Waldo Bastian has written an paper where he explains why a C++ (or Kde) application is slow to start and how the community could improve that."

Most of what is there is already being done within efm, but kde probably has a larger installed user base. Of course this stuff is really only with icons and images, and not fonts, which await the ubercool Xrender extension which does just that (or even cooler, the RGB Decimation for antialiasing text under X on LCD screens). Yum.

Well, as the title says - KDE 2.0 final is out! You can download it here or here or you can look at the mirrors (mirrors please!) Note: RH 6.2, FreeBSD and Solaris packages will be available soon. While you're downloading it, you may want to look at Kivio (a nice diagramming and flowcharting tool for Linux/KDE), or look for some applications for your KDE2 here. I've been using lately KDE 2.0 for a while and I must say - great work KDE team.
