Re:People want fear, not facts
I agree with you on the most part but I just wanted to highlight one exception I heard this season: Dennis Kucinich's TV and (especially) radio ads. No actors posing as "average Joes", no mudslinging of opponents; just him talking.
Were I a citizen of Ohio, he would have won my vote from that ad alone.

Re:Kills the mood
What, Dennis Kucinich's wife plays WoW?
Interracial relationships: gnome/elf marriages, next on Donahue/Geraldo/Sally Jessy/Town Talk with George. -
Dennis Kucinich -- PUT HIM ON THE DAMN POLLRead about what he believes in on his web site. It's pretty fucking obvious if you are a fan of informed consent in who you let run your government. No one else has ever come close to the level of detail he's not only put together but has freely shared online.
I've met him. He is a good guy and could handle the __job__ of being president better than anyone else who has run in my lifetime. Say whatever you want about his appearance, he is the one person who has been consistent and right about the importance of peace, all this time.
If you still think that looking good is more important than doing good in our leader, you're a fool, and you might as well re-elect bush. It's SO offensive that he's not on the poll. FIX THAT!
He's the obvious slashdot candidate, and the only one who understands the issues we have been talking about online for decades (check my user number, I've been around a while.)
Here are just a few examples of for incredibly forward thinking this man is:
He at least deserves a spot before Cthulhu. The future of the country matters. C'mon, I know the poll software can handle another spot or two. -

Dennis Kucinich!
Duh! Dennis Kucinich is obviously the biggest nerd up there on the debate platform. Ok, so he's a policy nerd perhaps more than a tech nerd, but I still think that counts for a lot.
-
Re:This must change
It seems like the ease of solving this problem is proportional to the probability of Dennis Kucinich becoming president.

Re:sites
You left out Kucinich: http://kucinich.us/ ! Dennis 2008's website is the best. A must read... especially the video about his British wife.

Don't forget Dennis Kuncinch...
Just because the corporate media has him under a blackout, doesn't mean that

Re:Slick Web Pages Say Much About American Public
By contrast, Kucinich actually answers the question.
You're just as bad as every other voter. So, it doesn't actually matter what Kucinich actually BELIEVES as long as he answers a question in a debate? I'm all for answering questions, but what he actually believes is what matters.
Just for laughs, I looked at his web site. From his Jobs Link, it is laughably wrong. Note that it is from 11/2006, so no excuses. First of all, "high" unemployment?? The unemployment rate is currently 4.6% (looked up from the Bureau of Labor Statistics). Then he claims the rate is 6.2%. If he can't get a simple statistic like that correct, why should he be president? And even if it was 6.2%, that's hardly a gloom and doom assessment of economy.
But regardless, his problem is not what you outline above, his problem is that he is a socialist, and socialism is near-universally rejected in the United States. In this particular case, he is rejected for what he believes, which is why someone *should* be rejected. You may like his ideas, and more power to you for that, if so. But don't kid yourself that it's because "he's just not handsome enough". You kind of remind me of the Libertarians on the other side, who think everyone rejects them because of any reason other than bad ideas.
-
on the D side....
...this guy has announced
http://www.kucinich.us/
personally, I won't vote D or R, but I might make an exception for Ron Paul, but he has said he doesn't want to.
My sort of political wish list is a stealth third party coup, where a lot of already elected folks (fed/state/local) who are Constitutionally bent and 100% pro *middle* class in outlook all decide one day to withdraw from their various parties and form a new centrist/populist/nationalist party, then run their own candidate for prez and shake things up. And I don't mean they just join an existing third party, but start one from scratch with guys already in office. -
myth my ass. kiss my ass.

Re:Gay marriageToo bad Kucinich isn't still running.
http://www.kucinich.us/issues/gayrights.php
I believe that equality of opportunity should be afforded to all Americans regardless of race, color, creed or sexual orientation. For that reason I support the right of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons to have the full protections and rights afforded under civil law including the right to marry the person of their choice.
So there you go. Kucinich is the only politician that I know of that doesn't classify humans into "people with rights" and "people without rights".

Re:This country needs more Feingolds
He [Feingold] was also the lone dissenter in the Patriot Act. Again, a very brave thing to do given that opponents can use that to paint him as a traitor, and they probably will try that tactic.
You seem to have forgotten about Dennis Kucinich.
He voted against the USA PATRIOT Act as well!!

It's like politicsIt's the positive campaign or the negative campaign. It's "Our products rule!" or "Your products suck!"
It's too bad the world hasn't quite settled down and unanimously agreed to disdain negative campaigns and choose based on relative merits as enunciated by positive campaigns. The nice guy still loses sometimes.

Re:USA politics = one party system? One thing you may want to look into is supporing Instant Runoff Voting. You can get some information about it here. It has been shown to be successful in places such as Papua New Guinea with an error less than that of US Presidential elections (yeah, what a high standard of comparison...). It allows people to vote their mind without worrying about a slightly lesser evil not getting their vote and losing to a greater one.
Basically, it works like this: You rank the candidates in order and your first choice gets your first vote. All the votes are counted and the candidate with the least votes is eliminated. If the candidate eliminated is your first choice, then your vote goes to the second candidate on your list. This process continues until only one candidate is left, and they are then elected. (See the link above for a better explanation...)
If this sounds like something you'd like instituted, contact your senators and representatives!
Furthermore, support candidates such as Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinich who have declared their support for IRV. As he says in his platform:
I also support "Instant Runoff Voting." IRV offers a cost-effective way of insuring that the winning candidate is preferred by a majority of voters; it encourages voters to vote their wishes and not their fears; it promotes greater voter turnout and positive campaigning.
I seriously believe that implimenting a system such as this is the best way to get out of the Kang "Go ahead, throw your vote away." mentality about 3rd party candidates that America seems to have. Hell, even I feel that way in this next election.Peace.

Re:Arms Race
I would have voted for the old Joe Lieberman, but although I'm from Ohio, I doubt you'll get me to vote for Kucinich. I've never agreed with Kucinich's stance on Iraq. I'll be happy when the soldiers return, but they need to be there long enough to secure the election and provide security until the Iraqi police force and army are trained enough to provide security to Iraq.
Sorry, but I don't think you're going to convince me that he's a good choice :-). I never looked seriously at his policy, so thanks for the link. But I don't agree with his statement on Iraq and after reading his10 points for bringing back the troops from Iraq, I don't agree with any of them (I would agree with 7 and 8, but since the rest don't apply, they won't happen either). He trusts the U.N. a lot more than I do.
Thanks for the suggestion, tho. I figure the Democratic candidate will eventually start discussing the general war on terror (not just Iraq/WMD, but the whole strategy), and when they do, I'll be able to judge (and change my sig.). -

Re:Arms Race
Unfortunately we don't have a choice. If the US doesn't develop weapons, somebody else will, and the chances are they are not going to be as benevolent as the US.
As an American, let me say:
Hahahahahaha! Benevolent, you say? What USA do YOU live in?I (american citizen) was recently attacked by my own Government's agents (funded appx. 50% through the DoHS's Anti-terrorism slush fund) in Miami, last November.
This is Benevolent? Watch what those bastards did to our own citizens, in the name of anti-terrorism, at that link. Still think the US is benevolent?
If the US cannot be trusted to not harm its own citizens, the concept of being benevolent to others is lost.
Try convincing the other 25,000 Americans who were with me that the US is "benevolent".
Hahahahaha

Dennis Kucinich
Dennis Kucinich www.kucinich.us voted against the PATRIOT ACT in congress, and forcefully supports the elimination of it as well as it's related nonsense. He also supports repealing NAFTA and removing the US from the WTO, etc. Yeah, that's why he isn't going to win, but he makes a lot of great points. I wish he got more coverage! He's the only candidate, Democratic or Republican, who I have ever felt excited about- once I heard him talking about his platform on NPR I was in shock to hear a candidate who actually made some sense. just an FYI!

Re:Stop trading MS codes
We should respect MS copyrights just as we expect MS to respect GPL. Sure MS may be dirty, but we are better than them.
The parents is what people should be saying here. Respect others as you would have them respect you, regardless of how evil/vile they are. MS may be a convicted monopoly and leveraging computer and software companies, but trading their copyrighted code illegally is not justified
What if you believe that copyright is generally evil?
I craft C++ code for a living. I use copyright defensively: I wouldn't copyright if everyone else and their mother did.
Same thing with patents. An invention of mine dealing with de-centralized statistics calculation and aggregation is being patented. I personally wouldn't bother to patent it (would rather have it public domain only) if it weren't for the fact that other companies would not hessitate to sue me into the ground if i used "their" ideas.
So, I am stuck by their actions, into doing the very thing I am against: seeking IP protection. However, I strongly advocate an existence where such is not needed and not possible anymore.
IMHO feel free to break copyrights & patents (even mine), but don't be surprised if you are counter-sued for violating MY IP, if you sue me for violating YOURS.

And you can't copyright a fact. A copyright on a 9, 10, or 11 digit number just isn't going to stand,
[...]Well let me be the first to drag RIAA into this...
If one subscribes to RIAA legal logic then you can copyright the many-many-digit binary number that is the representation of the bitmap image (barcode) should be "protectable", especially binary representation of the 2-d image of it.
By association, the lesser-quality or lossy, smaller (in terms of data) representations should be protected, right? Pretty much anything that can substitute as a usable copy, right?
Seems that the act of copying that data (your original bitmap, or apparently, any usable representation of it) to thier devices would be a violation.
Time to send in the Copyright Enforcers (tm). Perhaps if they "voluntarily" hand over the infringing equipment (all PCs used in the process) we the infringed may agree not to sue.

Hahaha
If only it were that easy!-dave-
Dennis Kucinich for President! All the right answers to the right issues!
He voted against the repressive USA-PATRIOT act, and wants voting reform, media and corporate reform, and drug reform!

And you can't copyright a fact. A copyright on a 9, 10, or 11 digit number just isn't going to stand,

Re:when governments remove civil liberties
You realistically have the choice of poeple who voted and/or supported the Patriot Act (Kerry, Dean, Edwards, Leiberman, i.e. the entire Democratic field) *OR* the guy that actually signed the shit into law, Mr. G.W. Bush. Whutta choice.
:/
You have a choice to vote for Dennis Kucinich and encourage others to do so as well. How realistic is that? Not much right now. But he is praised by many green party supporters and has a strict stance against the PATRIOT Act (PDF link). -

Kucinich is against outsourcingI see more and more of these articles on
/. about outsourcing and clearly a lot of us have problems with some aspect of it. If you have problems with this trend and want to see somebody in government who is aware of the problem and will try to help American workers, consider voting for Kucinich in the primary.A description of his policies on international trade is here.

Kucinich too
Dennis Kucinich too voted against this monstrocity. We somehow need to encourage other presidential candidates to vote against this. Like, say, a pledge to vote for any presidential candidate that would repel PATRIOT Act.

Re:Decisions, decisions...
I know that this isn't exactly "on topic", but it's important stuff.
You forgot to mention Dennis Kucinich. Issue for issue, he's right on. I would think most /.ers would be huge supporters. From electronic voting machines to the Iraq war, from education to health care, from the WTO to our civil liberties. He's the only presidential candidate who voted against the "Patriot Act." He would kick George W.'s ass in a debate. He is such a clear alternative to the current president. No Bush-Lite or New Democrat (Republican-Lite) here.
I agree about Edwards being Kucinich's VP. -
Point #3 + Rant
Energy Policy
Just wondering whether it will work too... -

And People who read news & blogs online not poBecause often they are using their phone line to go online via their dialup ISP connection. These people are those who spend MOST of their leisure online reading news, blogs, and doing other leisure reading and reading, ALL online. And at night or at other times, they download books and music from Kazaa or Usenet. Thus, they cannot be reached by phone by either parent, friend, or pollster. Thus, the Always-Online political persuasion is not reflected in political polls, such as Presidential race polls (Go Kucinich!) and other polls.
I propose that we Always-Online types are often of radical political persuasions. And because our opinions are not reflected in the polls, the polls come out looking LESS radical, and more mainstream than America really is in reality.
And since one big factor in politics is The BandWagon Factor, our absence from political polls means that America is being deradicalized. Look for example at online polls. DO they have somewhat different results from telephone polls? You bet!
What can we Always-Onliners do about it? VOTE!!
See you at the polling place.
