Re:Her Defense Was Pretty Good Too
If there is really a God, and I am keeping an open mind, I believe he, she, or it would not be very happy with the things perpetrated in his name
I don't know, total lack of reaction (which would be supposedly of zero effort) leads to conclusion that he, she, or it is at the very least indifferent.
Or maybe... I have an impression that one of the few things which would make sense (you know, logic, supposedly one of the gifts which makes us ~"in image" ...surely not to be discarded in such cases?), is if ~souls (flavoured in a way preferred by each deity; so far winning ones perhaps not so clear ;p ) are essentially a food; or maybe sensory organs of sorts, etc.
Other things which would readily make sense being even more unsettling... (spoiled kid with an ant farm; or maybe destroyer and damager, the worst of sinners; or the twists in classic dystheism, maltheism, gnosticism - unfortunately for the Gnostics, following the true deity and uncovering the real nature of the mainstream Christian one as an usurper, the Demiurge, gets you branded by his influence as a heretic and is overall a relatively dangerous thing to do ;p ) -
Re:This happens in Sweden too, and they don't lie.
Probably a large part of Americans grossly overestimate the scales of their country (second section of the text in lower left corner)
And no, Europe is not ""these INCREDIBLY dense population centers that extend, well.. the whole damned continent, really. The only sparsely inhabited areas of Europe are in the far north, up near the Laplanders" ...where do you get that from? (heck, and after implying in parent post it's all about population concentrations)
There are population gaps even in the very heart of the continent. "Real" desolate wilderness wouldn't spoil the stats anyway, they have by definition very little people; and are not very unike crossing a sea (also probably not completely unlike borders; it's not a "single market" but "common market", many things being loosely integrated, a lot of our network layouts and routes are weird - for example, this comments of mine probably will do two hops across the Baltic for no particular reason...)
Two nearest cities comparable to the behemoths that you mention are at least 5 hours away, probably 6 (I don't really ever check by car). In other countries, two different ones (both cities sucking into a fairly small area up to 1/3 of the population of their whole country or major subregion, leaving the rest with very modest population densities; bordering some extensive forests on my side)
Your population distribution is nowhere like sub-Saharan Africa, you're not anywhere near that rural.
(and again, first wave of our telecom infrastructure is more a case of 60s/70s; before that, countries tried to figure out how to stop people from starving and from whole families sharing one room, while experiencing population boom) -
Re:Fuck Microsoft Research
Photosynth is somewhat nice
...of course it sort of just lingers (it would probably see more uptake built into already popular photo sharing service like Flickr or, even better, Wiki; it's probably too much to expect MS donating it to the latter ...otoh they did open source even something non-tiny (as a project / code base) as Allegiance, which was also a MS Research project). Similar with Autocollage or Group Shot (adding such perks doesn't seem to make photo sharing platforms popular; perhaps people are also just prejudiced against online MS venues; and not without some good reasons)
It does paint the picture of rather limited area of research when it comes to something fun & new. NVM how this exploration of images and visual memory (Sensecam is interesting; even if it manages to be uncomfortably long in the tooth, hardware-wise) doesn't translate to much of anything in area of products. And then there's MS Songsmith - maybe fun in a way, but also the bane of humanity.
Can we still count .Net? One of the finest things among its ilk, and still "emerging" actively so there's most likely quite a bit of research behind it (Wiki table "Microsoft Research (MSR)" has one group clearly related to .Net - plus one of them gets the price just for the name :p ...particularly in the light of recent events) -

Re:Huh.
Quite telling, regarding their brainfarts. The modern theory of big bang was kick-started by a priest (also a mathematician and astronomer; though such hypothesis was also very convenient for somebody who dedicated large chunk of his life to Abrahamic mythology), no problems there... (likewise with evolution, even to a "truth cannot contradict truth" degree - if tl;dr, at least check 3 sentences starting with "How do the conclusions", 2 with "It is necessary to determine", and 3 with "Today, almost half")
Of course, for most of the creationists you are probably most likely to stumble upon, they are not even protestant generally speaking, they just like calling themselves like that (just because they are not catholic, I guess? And what about that "christian" label...). Protestants do not interpret the bible literally, if you do that you are a heretic. Of course most of the heretics found their faith ridiculed in the old world and migrated to the new, but being illiterate fools, they forget they weren't even really protestant, and that they in their teachings defied the words of Martin Luther... And now, given the degree of orthodox ignorance that's required to feel in any way at home in many of the churches... (nvm how people somehow think primitive uncivilized societies of superstitious illiterates were capable of securely maintaining even proper records, short of burying stone tablets and forgetting them because of the illiterate part) -
Re:Stop Calling it "The God Particle"
Prometheus Particle. He's even related, to the symbolic representation of Satan. People in question will find a reason to rally against things "satanic", things from Hell.
-
Re:Stop Calling it "The God Particle"
I'm offended by you implying that the evil supreme being I worship - and, in truth, vast majority of humans / the Demiurge (and more: revelations in zima post, faster to link that way
;p ) just keeps them in the darkness, for its own means - isn't a god. -
Re:Nothing new to see here
Off-world alright, supposedly. As for colonies - doesn't it, in some looser (or is that stricter?) sense, work out a bit like ant colony?
(google: heaven Borg cube ;p ...and even without the Borg Queen being a goddess (I knew it!) and undead drones integrated into the collective hive mind, our role is essentially akin to drones controlled by pheromones (also when myths are just myths, and religions - social constructs); but seriously, considering certain basics (zima comment, faster linking that way ;p ) - one of the very few things able to make mythologies coherent, sensible is... that we're a means of sustenance, "food", or even recreational drug (and better to have them flavored in a preferable way, better for "souls" to be tasty); or sensory organs / equipment, at best) -
Re:Merger of Corporations and the StateOr...
I never meant to say that the Conservatives are generally stupid. I meant to say that stupid people are generally Conservative. I believe that is so obviously and universally admitted a principle that I hardly think any gentleman will deny it. -- John Stuart Mill
Hence a fairly reliable voter base...
Generally, regarding such "discussions" - can't we just link to few old ones? (even from this site) They already cover pretty much everything, regarding such trollnews. There's really nothing more to add. Quick search gives one example (I'm linking to thread, that includes especially answers), and another. Or even this and that.
Some pictorial ontopic humor thrown in
PS. Personal observation about how we merely like to convince ourselves into reliability of our memory, how many myths about it & our minds we tend to believe (list of cognitive biases, almost unchanged split-brain patients, mention of one localized brain trauma resulting in people becoming completely blind without them realizing it, popular harmful BS lies / myth of "we're so important, gods love us, more of us live now than have ever lived!" & ignoring 100+ billion dead homo sapiens sapiens (at least we will be similarly ignored very quickly, so there's some "balance"...)); also about how decent and freedom loving people we are (it's a bit sad how our deep need for Just World gets derailed so easily :/ )
How, when people get older, they tend to start believing myths about the greatness of their youth (not the least because it makes us feel better when faced with "frustrating" reality of how much better in fact it is "now", for most cases of "now") ... that approach right here is also at the core of anti-liberalism. -

Re:Back at you.

Re:Back at you.
...start with the focusing of the teaching of the christ...
Except he's wrong!
;p But seriously, the christ is also a wolf masquerading as a sheep - "do what I say or suffer eternally"? "My fairly unremarkable, not anywhere near worst death is worth enough to balance out the deaths of 100+ billion homo sapiens sapiens and their 'sins' - largely arbitrary ones, all imposed on humanity by me with full foreknowledge"?
That's something worthy of Demiurge (and probably why gnostics were labelled as heretics early on), deity of dystheism or maltheism, the ultimate sinner and destroyer (two old Usenet posts, hard to say anything better in time it takes to paste them) -

Re:Speed limits could be programmed now.
Go to any largely car-free place (quite a few of those), move around it a bit even just on foot or bike. Now try doing it anywhere near as quickly and conveniently (nvm pleasantly) in a place completely hijacked by cars. Then start talking about those creating inconveniences (also...)
And as a matter of fact, places focusing in prevention (not in your straw-man style of course) of crime, disease, accidents, etc. fare quite well with that approach. -

Like most of those images. Or a beautiful irony from XKCD...
( Particularly this one (but certainly not this!). Very related to TFA. And another. BTW, Zeus is pissed off... Or maybe... Definitely this one in the case of this story, also those two, and certainly this...
Even reminders of how our world unfolded can cheer you up: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten ... possibly even future one ) -

Re:Not Banned
To be fair, saying "Now it has less benefit than our primate sense of vertigo" is very premature, at the least
... it's all about winning the evolutionary race (of whatever form, in whatever medium), in the end.
And actually, I suspect it might be even helpful at some point - not a lot of other reasons to really push for space colonization, other than "to claim the gift of deity-of-the-hour".
Surprising amounts of hidden truth, too ;> (can we even fully break free, anyway?)
PS. BTW, it's very revealing to possibly experience, at earlier stages of life, a form of curious syndrome ... which largely disappeared around the same time as when drugs targeting its underlying condition have done its job and were discontinued. The specific condition being, according to neurologists, very under-diagnosed (no, it's nothing like stereotypes; my relatively noticeable form was about fainting too easily, in conditions which are "normally" contributing anyway - high temperature, exhausting exercise, oxygen deprivation - the last, funnily enough, typically in churches!...sounds familiar?) - and suspected in quite a few religious figures. -

You don't remember well enough. The above is really not even a particularly strong example. It should be possible to find screenshots and videos from the time of announcement of the console.
They were insane. Sony did exaggerate strongly the capabilities of this one. And probably with "good" reason - to draw attention away from the Dreamcast.

Re:I agree
Considering general absurdity of certain expectations (or specifically the examples of gnosticism / Demiurge, liar and damager of maltheism, the worst of cruel "sinners") - perhaps, overall, we are treated like that?
;pOne can ask - what such deity could get from a constant stream of preconditioned "souls"
... flavored to its liking? Power? Pleasure? It certainly desires adulation, worship, ... sustenance, food? (maybe, at best, as sensory organs for the "real world") -
Re:I, for one, have childlike faith...
Hm, that could give me some opportunity for revenge / a form of MAD, if you will: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Alberto_Bertorelli (assuming you're familiar with the series; there's always some chance in, IIRC, Canada - some hope how the thought of Bertorelli might spoil your future degustations; or maybe simpler / nah, probably old trick & everybody immunized
