Re:talking about data how safe are the data center
Data center not too far from my house has the capabilities to run their entire center off diesel generators. They test it once a month. http://www.liquidweb.com/datacenter/datacenter3.html

Re:Turn off the servers
I couldn't have said it better. It's not cheap to run a reliable server room. The hardware that you use to run your systems is rarely the biggest cost. If you need reliability, that means you need:
* easy access to all machines
* utility power
* battery backups
* backup generators
* multiple network entry points
* adequate cooling
* redundant everythingAmong other stuff I'm probably forgetting. If you can't afford to build this yourself, it's really best in the long run to host your mission-critical machines in a datacenter that has all of this taken care of for you.
Where I work, we have around 20 great big stonking AC units. These puppies run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. I can't imagine the fat check our utility company receives each month, but it's clearly worth it since we never have servers die of heat-related problems.

Re:Reporting is useless
I would agree with you for the most part, but there is one ISP that took care of the issue in a timely manner, and followed up with me: Liquid Web.
DISCLAIMER : I am in no way affliated with Liquid Web. I am just very impressed with their response time + customer service. I work at an ISP myself, and I constantly fire off abuse reports to various other ISPs. And these guys really get stuff done, fast.

Disable catch-all
Your host should be able to disable the catch-all account for your domain, which will result in any message not sent to a specific account being bounced.
You should also be able to set up filters in your accounts control panel. If your host does not support this, you need a new host. -
Tr0ll death
Yes, the Slashdot police are once again on a troll hunt. The newest troll plan?
Ignore the trolls! Yes, their detailed plan may be dangerously effective... The plan has led to the death of many things:
- Lung Cancer
Are trolls next?- Iraq
Q:How will I know this is happening?
A:Obvious troll posts are being modded as Offtopic instead of Troll!
Continue the dream...For heart and the soul,
Fill up the database...and troll, troll, troll!

LiquidWeb is goodI work for, and recommend, Liquid Web. The servers run RedHat linux with the following:
Apache w/ CGI MySQL 4 PHP Perl SpamAssassin SSH
Plus all the other standard features.. multiple e-mail accounts, FTP accounts, etc.
We'll install any Perl/PHP modules you want, and offer fairly cheap virtual dedicated server solutions (starting at $80 a month.) Our webmaster account comes with 250 Mb of space, and our professional comes with 750Mb of space.
Plus, all the techs here know *NIX. They're smart guys. We're hiring more on right now to provide even better support.

Who it runs as
My host liquidweb, has a wrapper script that allows your cgi-bin to suid as you. Otherwise it runs as nobody. For instance, I want to have a cgi script that makes changes to my home dir, i can use their wrapper to give it access. In the same way I am sure I could set this up to give me a shell. However, I have an ssh account so it doesn't matter.

Re:Dark ages?
Well, it's a new definition for "dark ages", that's for sure. I was under the impression that the defining characteristics of the dark ages was ignorance, suppression, warfare, famine, strife -- you know, BAD STUFF.
Actually, the Dark Ages are called that because there is very very little information about what happened in that period.

Re:Options?
check selection from another osdn site:
Counting till 126. And that is free and shareware. I bet this doubles when going for payware. Some packages are even so disfunctional it will even block execution of viruses.
And not forgetting number 127: telnet your pop3. . 8 commands to remember, if that is not user friendly. 8-)
