Re:NyTimes SlashboxAnnoyance...
I really can't be bothered to create an account and sign up for spam from every single website I ever browse. Other news sites, such as the LA Times are beginning to follow suit. I saw an interesting article in a UK news site the other day, only to be prompted with a box telling me to register, then pick a userid that hasn't already been taken, then choose a password they consider to be secure enough, then wait who knows how many minutes for an email to arrive, then click on the URL encoded in the mail, then verify my account, then log in, then go to the story I was interested in. Needless to say, I didn't look at the story.
The NY Times Random Login Generator is a good start, but if every news site (or content sites in general) start requiring cumbersome registration, all the sudden the internet becomes far less useful.

NY Times random login generator there should be more of these, we need to make our lives easier, there is no need whatsoever for nytimes to require my userinformation to display free articles. If they want to display their articles freely why have these login requirements at all?

A Story That Shouldn't Have Been Rejected
We can have all sorts of stories posted about the latest Linux kernel patch level, but when it comes to important matters of freedom... the Slashdot editors turn the other way ("Oooh! Puppies!"). Sorry for the OT, but this is for those interested in the fight to keep freedom in and censorship out of libraries...
* 2002-06-01 13:41:19 Courts Strike Down Law For Library Filters (yro, news) (rejected) According to this story over at the NewYork Times (free registration automatically generated for you), a "federal court panel struck down a law requiring libraries to filter the Internet for material harmful to minors yesterday, saying that the technology blocks so much unobjectionable material that it would violate the First Amendment rights of library patrons." I think we all know what a great win this is, especially if you've ever had a search struck down when doing research on breast cancer or the Holocaust (such nasty topics children should never be exposed to, appearantly). -

Re:More info of the fraud
Godless Capitalist has followed up the post you referenced by pointing out that a committee has been formed. This was mentioned earlier, but the Times article seems more informative and names the high profile members of the committee.

Use this link to automatically generate a login and view the article.
I can't figure out what his motive could be. Like Godless mentioned, he was destined to be found out when engineers attempted to create products. I wonder if he was trying to gain riches or fame, or if (unlikely) he believed so much in the new technology that he wanted to see it attempted even if he had to fudge some results. -
Re:NYTimes Login
Now what would be -really- useful is for someone to write a PHP script that goes to the signup page, enters random information. signs you up, then logs in and goes to the page you originally wanted. Then we could just point all the links to mydomain.net/ReferToNyTimes?StoryID=x You mean something like this?

Re:I find it funny thatIt's floating right here.
It's funny, but every time a NYT story comes up on
/. now, the first thing I do is search for the direct link (which doesn't seem to be working right now) in the comments (since I didn't keep the cookie), then I read the replies about how posting this link is evil, a DMCA violation, it's karma whoring, and bla bla bla... :)--

Article, linked with the NY Times random account generator...
My first time karma whoring. Woa it feels weird. :) It really is annoying to have to register to read an article... -
Respectfully, no. Not at all.
"Synergies": dot.com-speak for "We don't know what the hell we are going to do next".
Don't believe me? Look at Margaret Wente's commentary on BCE's chair resigning at the Globe and Mail, Michael Posner's comments on Vivendi's fall from grace, and perhaps most damagingly, a recent NYT comment (registration, blah blah).
One problem is that 'content driving distribution' ends up looking like trying to play monopoly (in general terms, not the board game), especially when the 'synergistic' entity restricts content competition on distribution channels. Remember the ABC cable fiasco from a couple of years ago, when they wouldn't let one channel show up on people's tv screens?
Another is not restricting access to avoid the public/governmental response outlined above: where's the 'synergy'? If there is no 'synergy', why bother?
AOL-TW is just the biggest failure, not the only one. And to be honest, the prospect of seeing this kind of 21st century 'new' mercantilism fail actually doesn't bother me a whit. -

Errrm...
Ummm.. Niscenus -- are you sure you linked to the correct Christopher Jones on your Slashdot post? This is taken from the website [http://www.christopherrjones.com/] you linked to in the post:
My name is Christopher Ryan Jones. I currently live in Houston, TX. I am a student at North Harris College and the Owner of Think Computing. I guess that should do it for now. Look for more information coming as I have time to post it.
Are you sure this is the same Christopher Jones that is a Microsoft VP? I'm guessing not. Oh and by the way, for those of you who don't know about this and want to login to NYTimes without having to give personal information or fill out the damn forms yourself to make an account you can click here and allow this site to automatically create an account for you and log you in and give you the cookie you need so you don't have to mess with creating an account and all that jazz.

Just use the Random NY Times Registration Generator.
How many people is this really a problem for, anyway? I can understand that college students don't necessarily have the advantage of cookies, but everyone else? I filled out a fake account, ONCE, and I never have to re-enter it here, unless of course I install a new browser (/me hugs Mozilla 1.0).
