and I know the location intimately. The speed limit here is 40. The road, Mill Avenue, going northbound is two lanes plus it is adding turn lanes to go west and east. There is a bike lane. The road has just gone over a bridge (man-made lake) and under a freeway bridge (202) -- there are no off- or on-ramps at this location. There is a parking lot under the bridge for the concert venue (SW corner: visible in the Reuter's image) plus there's a public park/beach on the north side of the lake.

I haven't seen the crumpled bicycle photo, but we JUST started a bunch of "share bike" schemes in the Phoenix metro area (well, Phoenix proper has had one for while -- Tempe/Scottsdale ones are more recent): Limebike is the main one, I think (we have some that have "Ono" on them, as well). So if the bike is yellow or yellow/green, it was probably one of those. Tempe is hugely bike friendly for a US city because it is both (a) the site of ASU (b) progressive.

The southbound lanes are 2 wide at this point, so this lady was riding a bike across ~5 lanes of traffic plus a BIG (mostly paved) median. There's a shortcut trail just RIGHT there to go east, so maybe she was aiming for that.

A sad situation for sure. I see the Uber and Waymo vehicles all the time, so there's no lack of miles in and around that area.

What death and destruction do you think "disasters" have wrought in Phoenix? We don't have "disastrous" flooding, drought and heat. It's hot. It floods a little when the monsoon is in town.. Sometimes water is low. Those aren't disasters.

Every once in a while, we flood the ground floor of a home in a wash or ravine, close an airport runway, or wash out a bridge. Sometimes a moron drives through a wash and needs rescued. 33 years ago, we blew out some old bridges... In short, it rains here every once in a while, sometimes it doesn't rain for a while and that's it.

Heat on the other hand is real.

Immigrants die in the heat sneaking across the border in droves. 70-some-odd deaths per year are attributed, or had a helping hand from heat here with non-migrant Arizonans as well. They include gems like an 86 year old guy overheating on his roof (!?!) and infants left in cars by morons, but do include the occasional middle-aged heat stroke victim. In a city of nearly 4M, I imagine 70's pretty low. People have to die of something. ...but none of that is abnormal. It's normal to be 110 here for weeks at a clip, and data centers here are built with exactly that in mind -- since it was 110 last year, and the year before, and before, and before.

In any case, the Fast Company article referenced by @lanner makes it pretty clear why McAfee cleared out for Belize: he's liable to lose a wrongful death lawsuit in Maricopa County Civil Court (search on case# CV2008-009723) related to the half-assed sky trike tour company he let a 22 y.o. nephew run.

According to TFA, "Maricopa County Judge Gary Donahoe signed the search warrant." Judge Donahoe 's qualifications are described here. His contact information (including phone and email address) is here.

Some(all?) county recorders have CCTV cameras set-up for public viewing election night. Open your mind and you will find it @ "yourcounty".gov.

If you can't find it, the DOT traffic cameras can be fun to watch when crackhead carjack hijinx erupts. They're there 24/7/365 (*except during hurricanes in Galveston and N'orleans).

Read a traffic ticket someday. They have fields for criminal and civil complaints, and different language. With a civil ticket it will say something along the lines of "Without admitting responsibility... etc," for a criminal ticket it'll say "Without admitting guilt... etc." Criminal proceedings are to establish guilt, civil are to establish responsibility.

Ok, I call BS. I handle litigation technology for a law firm, and have been in many E-courtrooms. There is no camera made to focus on the defendant.

The cameras are voice activated, so only the person speaking will appear on the recording. Additionally, these are widely used in civil matters, so there is no "defendant" per se. And a "nice behind-the-scenes" tidbit. The hardware used to capture all of this? Tivo.

Another 'me too' comment, I live 10 miles downwind from Palo Verde, which was (might still be?) the highest output civil plant in the US. Obviously, you don't know much about Phoenix history. Phoenix has been a rich place of agriculture with plenty of water to sustain multiple cultures throughout history.

The prehistoric Hohokam Indians first settled the area about 300 B.C. and dug a system of extensive irrigation canals for farming. This system included over 300 miles of major canals, which took its water from the Gila, Salt, San Pedro and Santa Cruz rivers. This water was then used to support thousands of acres of farm land. Much of Phoenix still uses the canals dug by the Hohokam.

The Phoenix area has sustained many cultures for many centuries. Phoenix has quite a few "renewable" sources of water and desert land is quite fertile and supports many crops including fruit, lettuce, cotton and hay.

Arizona produces enough cotton a year to provide at least one pair of jeans for everyone in America. Also, it is very likely that the Iceberg lettuce that you enjoy in your salad comes from Arizona. If you enjoy fruit salad, Arizona is one of the top producers of melons in the U.S.

Not to leave out the carnivores, 534.9 million pounds of beef comes from Arizona cattle per year. Getting hungry? Let's finish things of with dessert... if you have some cookies, you need milk... over 350,000 gallons are produced in AZ each year.

While it is true that Phoenix has outpaced its local resources and requires supplementary services to survive, it is far below that of much of Southern California. After all, what major metropolitan city can support itself agriculturally? I think that our neighbors in Las Vegas and Southern California are much worse off.

Just because Phoenix is in a desert, doesn't mean that it isn't naturally livable. Actually, your dire assessment of the area would lead me to conclude that the fact those of us who life there aren't dead yet, is proof enough that someone is doing something right.

Having lived in Georgia, I can say, from experience, that Maricopa County services are so much better than those of DeKalb County. The fact that my driver's license doesn't expire until I am 65 is reason enough to offer props. You have no idea how many hours I've spent waiting GA DOV lines to renew a license. In Maricopa, nearly every government service has an online component and information is only a click away: http://www.maricopa.gov/

The last three pages of the linked PDF discussing where ads might end up may very well change your opinion. I thought this was merely the addition of three text ads on the actual GIS application, but they're really going all out.

I don't blame the county for doing this, all in all. From an urban-planning geek's perspective, it's one of the coolest local sites I know of. But serving 300,000 a month with what I assume to be an intensive GIS application can't be cheap.

The notion of having a user "pay" for government services rendered is of course nothing new (have you seen what some cities charge for copying fees?), and this really is an extension of that concept to the Internet.

But where does it stop? Where, for example, is the line drawn between a local government's Tourism Bureau and an all-out travel information website with hotel reservations, tickets to local shows, maps, guides, and whathaveyou? If you run a site like that, do you want to be competing against your Government?

This is off-topic, but I'm bored.

The project is now entitled Valley Connections and is managed by the Maricopa County Regional Public Transit Authority, also known as Valley Metro. You're mistaken about light rail not fitting without a serious restructuring of the freeway system. In fact, it perfectly augments the highway system in place and what will be built. Light Rail only takes up two lanes of surface street for both directions.

And the reason you haven't heard of it is because you haven't looked. They've finalised the designs of the cars, ordered them from some company, and they've been doing massive planning. Rolling a $10 million/mile transit system isn't easy, nor cheap, but it's ostensibly getting the federal dollars required to aleviate some of that part of the problem. There's also a fuss at ASU about proposed alignments on campus.

This schedule says service should be operating by 2007.
