Re:Prior art
Is it sort of like if you could somehow plug in a speakon connector or a 1/4 inch connector into the same jack?
... or the 1/4" | XLR combo port found on most decent quality mixing boards since at least the 1990's.

Re:What?
Yes there is, HDMI over IP has been around a while.
There are lots of advantages, for instance, my auction site is a couple of square miles in size, getting directly cabled video to each location would be very expensive.

Dinosaur Duct ftw!
I've replaced 90% of my zip ties, mounting bases, velcro, etc. with Dinosaur Duct.
It's available in shorter seqments from Markertek. -
Re:Too much wire/cable BSAnd I'd like to echo the comments of a previous poster: if you are looking for high-quality cables / connectors
/etc. but don't want to get ripped off, use Parts Express. They kick all kinds of ass.Parts Express is good, but I buy most of my cables from http://www.markertek.com/ This is a pro video house, and sells cables to audio and video pros. Well made from good parts, and reasonably priced.

Re:Old...In Japan it is common to have combo DVD-MiniDV tape devices, something that home video editors here in the US would kill for.
JVC DVD and Mini-DV Video Recorder Combo 250 GB HDD. $1500
the average US consumer IS too damned stupid. Give them a DVD recorder remote with 52 buttons and a LCD status screen and they freak out. Give them full control menus on their TV for adjustment and they freak out. How many people went through the 80's with a blinking 12:00 clock on the VCR because it was "too hard to set"?
or maybe buyers in the US are smart enough to demand a recorder that can set its own damn clock.

Direct to Harddrive.
IIRC there are a few manufacturers who have firewire attached standalone harddrives. Plug DV right into them and big-fiddle, you have files.
Maybe peruse Markertek's website http://www.markertek.com/ -
Shop where the broadcast techs shop!
IMHO Monster cables aren't worth it. I've also seen many forums echoing the same. They're gimmicky and luxury priced, and I've been annoyed before with the extra girth of some of their connectors. I have little doubt that they are over all high quality cables though and I've had them fail like any other cables too. I cackled when I saw monster cables for xbox for $50.
That being said, I'd go shop where broadcast people shop for such things, since their quality requirements are much more stringent than circuit city's offerings.
I found these guys a few years ago (their catalog is yummy):
http://www.markertek.com/CatList.asp?cat=CABLESCON N&subcat=VIDEOCAB&prodClass=&search=0&off=0
monster cable is mysteriously not on their list of cable manufacturers that they stock:
http://www.markertek.com/MfgList.asp?cat=CABLESCON N&subCat=VIDEOCAB
Neither is Belkin. I personally don't like most of belkin's products, and often have found that they're just cheap rebranded stuff, usually overpriced and caused me much pain and woe. Also I always suspected Belkin's name was selected to be confusable with a far superior cable maker, Belden (which also happens to be carried by markertek).
Best of Luck! -

Expensive maybe, but not ridiculously so...
I get this catalogue for some reason and happened to remember reading this.

it pays to shop around..
One of my favorite places to shop for such goodies is Markertek. It doesn't cost you anything to have them send you a catalog.

Not a Steadicam
With the exception of the Steadicam JR, most Steadicams have a body harness. That makes them much more stable than using you hand.
This is really more similiar to a lower end Glidecam stabilizer (even this is floating).
There are also some rather cheap alternatives out there to make a camcorder smoother.
Granted this is significantly cheaper to make than these products, but from my experience anything that is handheld doesn't work as well as the bodyrigs. Personally, I'd rather just do it by hand alone.
You also might want to check out a relatively cheap jib too. -

Re:It is still onboard sound
If only there were some way to have a digital output from the computer, and do the D/A conversion in a dedicated box.
Here's one
This box allows you to use spdif with your existing analog stereo.

Bedframe Rails = homebrew rack on the cheap
I just completed my own homebrew rack, and although it wasn't exactly done cheaply I did research most of the Diy options. The most promising solution I found was using bedframe rails to rack your equipment. They're strong, cheap and readily available in custom lengths at places like Home Depot. They can be mounted to a number of framing materials. ITU standard holes are fairly easy to drill, but threading can be a problem. fortunately you can just drill oversized holes and use cheap clip-on racknuts to mount all of your equipment.
Good luck! -
Racks
If you want a 19" rack, you can buy rails and build them into your own housing. Try Middle Atlantic products from your favorite video supply retailer, such as this one (no affiliation). Buy the screws there too, to make sure you get the right size.

Re:Thoughts on handling this. When you say RG-59 is good for line-level audio, can you just use a mini plug connector from a sound card directly into RG-59 with some kind of adaptor? What would that adaptor looke like. Do they make mini plug to BNC? Or do you go mini to RCA and RCA to BNC?
Can you do that directly or through an RCA/BNC adaptor or would you need to go to XLR? Does an XLR adaptor work with RG-59? But then how do you get the sound card connected?
Are you suggesting something like this would be useful? If so, then how do you get from the XLR to the sound card mini plug?
I'm pretty clueless on this, but it sounds like a way to synchronize my upstairs and downstairs amps to my sound card. I already have a spool of RG-59 laying around.

Re:But using regular CAT 5 cable?
I guess you haven't seen these.

Re:RJ45 Connector Durability IssuesThere is no way that RJ45 connectors would be able to endure any kind of live stage abuse.

Re:I want a *modular* digital VCR solution
All this is already available. Most of it can be found at Markertek right now. What your asking for is stock equipment at a big video post production house. The reason it is in big post houses and not in yours is that it'll cost you $500K. People would love to sell you this rig, now someone just needs to find a way for mere mortals to afford it. -Ma'at
