    Two arbitrary lines in a 2D plane will meet with probability 1.0.
    Two arbitrary lines in 3D space will meet with probability 0.0.
    (In each case, the exceptions are vanishingly few relative to the norm.)

    Extrapolating this to expanding 3D bubbles in almost any higher dimensional space the probability is again 0.0. Even more obviously, there is nowhere for collisions to happen if those bubbles are each creating their own space, not infecting some pre-existing space. The latter would have way too many other observable consequences to be a serious proposal.

    (I have played with enough simplistic models to be currently comfortable with a notion that the implosion of a Type 1a supernova might be a good model for a cosmic egg which gives rise to a chaotic larval stage in which such conservative bubbles arise. (The political metaphor is not lost either.))

    I still cite Out of Control as the most readable introduction to the oft confused subject of complexity, and am right now wading through What Technology Wants but finding it far more forced (sleep inducing). While I clearly don't disagree with the idea of seeing technology as a partner with humanity, your newer book reads like you have invested too long in a world constructed from your imaginings and cut back your level of interest in looking at what is actually going on, an interest which seemed to pervade your earlier projects.

    Yes, I am well past your rationalisation for abandoning "extropy", so what I really want to know is whether we are all going to be condemned to defend our business models to the death?

    In early MacPaint successor FullPaint by Ann Arbor Softworks, back in those days of single bit graphics, clicking command-L applied one iteration of John Horton Conway's Game of Life to the current selection rectangle.

    Trying it idly one day on a screen grab that included a MacDraw ruler soon lead to the discovery that a long straight line with every 17th cell live on the next row generated a field of pulsars and I was hooked on what was effectively the study of Life in a narrow cylindrical universe.

    The idea of filling space so easily soon also had me playing with agars where the early Mac's reliance on 8x8 patterns in the absence of colours largely confined my options to finding something close enough to a critical density that it would sustain interesting erosion from a single changed cell, eventually settling mostly on a pair of beacons, either in or our of phase:

    I've resumed playing around with these every time I've found a better tool. That experience informs my strong position on disagreements over the border of order-edge of chaos and has very much informed my last few months' work with the much more productive tool of Golly 2.0 running the Generations 345/3/6 rule which Mirek Wojtowicz christened "LivingOnTheEdge" in 2001 and commented only: "In this very chaotic rule it's hard to tell if patterns will survive or die out." It may have been neglected for seven years but I'm making up for that now, and still discovering something unexpected emerging more days than not.

    Smolin, Wolfram and others consider evolving graph-theoretic networks as a more likely base model for a theory of everything.

    My first, and to-date only, experiment with a simplest-of-class evolving graph very soon produced a good analogy of inflation.

    (Before I figured out what was going on, this 'inflation' had the side effect of making my puter seem to 'go away' even when I capped the clock at ten ticks ... an interesting experience which helped inspire my OSDC 2004 'Design on the Fly' paper (PDF) and slides (S^5 HTML).)

    It may be interesting to those who aren't just here to bash Wolfram that this offer to provide a prize for a proof of one of his key conjectures in A New Kind of Science (NKS) comes only seven weeks after another key conjecture was disproved. (The fact that that disproof was brought to public notice by the NKS Forum moderator might suggest that the ongoing NKS project is happy enough for results to fall whichever way they will.)

    On a visit to Champaign-Urbana in the late 1980s, still before he officially started on NKS, Wolfram took me through where he felt his cellular automata research was headed which hinted at some of the inferences he would eventually draw from his mountains of research data. That was even before the Santa Fe Institute paper which was foolishly read as retreating from the edge of chaos-border of order which had briefly been the focus of the quest for the source of emergent complexity during the 1980s.

    The resources Wolfram is bringing to the table are significant and have certainly helped put complex systems back in the spotlight after far too many of the first generation of researchers were seduced by the marginal returns they could get by applying their methods to the derivatives market, no matter whether their methods made a significant difference or not.

    The downside of continuing to focus on the simplest possible mechanisms (Wolfram calls them 'programs') as the source of a critical threshold is that all those much sought after proofs of universality, from the early one for Conway's Life on, are vast feats of engineering and thus make no useful progress towards the implicit goal of helping to explain how we/anything got here in the first place.

    So I'll keep playing with my own idiosyncratic program to explore a bit deeper in that narrow and difficult transition region between order and chaos, but might be tempted to have another look at Mathematica's increasing support for such research once it is available via CP6AN.

    I was getting so sick of the BS that a while before the (southern) summer holidays I dragged my ancient but previously unopened The Origin of Species out of my bookshelves as occasional train reading, now 90% done.

    When Darwin wrote it, heritability was clearly accepted as a fact, but nobody was close to thinking about the mechanisms in any more detail than an almost prurient interest in the diversity of mechanisms for reproduction.

    Over and over Darwin emphasises that variation necessarily precedes selection without pretending to have any detailed idea as to how such variation occurs. IMNSHO, the subsequent and continuing lack of interest in the mechanism(s) of variation is a big reason so many otherwise often reasonable people have trouble getting their heads around evolutionary theory. And it's not as though there hasn't been a lot of progress on that front, especially our increasing understanding of genetic recombination and regulation.

    All Darwin basically said about natural selection was based on the idea of a struggle for life, something familiar to nature and those living closest to it, but something most humans want to deny themselves and theirs any experience of. He realised that natural selection provided a much slower acting analogue of the artificial selection long practiced by breeders of varieties of domesticated animals and plants, where the breeders' fancies replaced the struggle for life as the detemining factor.

    What was most surprising was how few mistakes of detail Darwin actually made, having been born into a culture that just assumed separate creation and having to see past that himself before he could organise his thoughts.

    He was able to develop an appreciation of deep time based on little more than the obvious age of geological strata and without well understood evidence of anything more traumatic than the end of the most recent glacial advance. Plate tectonics and receding galaxies needed to wait for another century.

    Without the powerful notion of fractal self-similarity to explain the shape of the tree of life, he felt he had to go through the argument at several levels as to how a few descendants of a successful line would diversify over time, most recently to form separate species, then families*, etc. all the way back up the Linnean heirarchy.
    The understanding of evolutionary mechanism works at the level of genes, and populations whereas Darwinism was concerned mainly with species.
    It isn't the mechanism that works at the level of genes but a very narrow mathematical approach to allele frequency and similar. That power of that math still doesn't let you escape the fact that it is whole organisms through at least some kind of relationship with others of their species who either successfully breed or die virgins. Viability in nature's struggle for life is determined at every point of an organism's life cycle.

    *the prior use of terms like 'families' suggested an unstated wider awareness that some kind of relatedness might exist between species.

    birds in general have their origins traced back to dinosaur-era reptiles. That's a pretty huge developmental shift between humanity and bird.
    There are some things our natural anthropocentrism encourages us to leave out of Evolution 101:
    1. For viable species, selection favours those most efficient at doing what they do, which is unlikely to favour innovation except in times of stress.
    2. While there are well known examples of convergent evolution, there are a lot more examples of the loss of ancestral function in descendant clades.
    3. Of the millions of species descended from the last common ancestor (LCA) of birds and mammals, homo sapiens sapiens is but one and thus clearly atypical.*
    While behaviour does not fossilise well, it is conceivable that the LCA learnt some behaviours by imitating its parents, though a comparable level of active nurturing evolved independently in eusocial insects. Early developmental pathways tend to be much more strongly conserved than other characteristics over evolutionary time.
    Cockatoos ... develop intelligence of many sorts, though of a more social nature.
    I was unable to identify any qualitative difference between the lunchtime chatter in the cafeteria at my alma mater and the chatter of a flock of corellas roosting in red gums by the Wimmera River at Dimboola.
    it also seems to make the possibility of intelligent life outside our known observed environments seem less unlikely too - especially if it can develop in so seemingly independant circumstances, despite a somewhat shared environment.
    We also keep forgetting that orcas and elephants have very strong claims to being the other most intelligent mammals, but their bodily size and consequent food consumption has made it impossible for them to form populations on the scale needed to support our kind of culture. The cockatoos might well be a better model, particularly if we concede that evolution may have been more concerned with improving brain function per gram in flying critters.

    It may be relevant that "singing" appears to be one of the commoner examples of convergent evolution. I guess I've put off writing my "singing ape hypothesis" far too long already.

    *This may also be taken as evidence that "intelligence" is overrated.

    But the world changed while he was writing Out of Control largely due to the exaggerated importance placed on Mitchell, Hraber and Crutchfield's 1993 paper which cast aspersions on Langton's lambda and implicitly on the whole notion of "border of order--edge of chaos".

    Wolfram's reunification of his own old Class 3 and Class 4 under his more recent Principle of Computational Equivalence goes even further in a direction I'd rather see us retreat from.

    I actually read the book by Johnson reviewed here for contrast while I was wading through Wolfram's tome. Emergence now sits among a very small pile of books I keep on my desk in case I need to refer to them. A New Kind of Science also sits on my desk, but mainly to elevate my iBook, especially since Wolfram made the whole book I available online. I had to grab Out of Control off the living room bookshelf, but it still ranks as my favourite from the '90s.

    Maybe I'm just letting myself get distracted by my housemates' 8 month old German Shepherd's efforts to do archaeology in our yard.

    Several times I read "A dog will warm himself by the fire, but will never throw another log on it" as "never throw another dog on it" and so was infering that DaddyWanker was claiming dogs could make the moral distinction between inanimate fuel and other dogs, or maybe claiming that dogs are innately more moral than human arsonists if not crematorium operators.

    Most dogs I've known can find better things to do with tree parts than accelerating greenhouse warming.

    More on topic, one of my own sadly long departed dogs became quite good at taking any old branch and stripping it down until it was much better shaped for throwing and fetching, a toy maker if not a tool maker.

    I had a bit to do with Wolfram in the late 1980s and have been actively following the NKS project. The essay currently on my discoloured home page is my relatively recent take on the subjects raised in your post, which is almost too good for a /. post.

    The 2% I partly disagree with is that Wolfram is saying something important that Dawkins (and other politically correct authoritarians) would have us ignore in that the mechansisms for producing variation are at least as important as the mechanisms for selection in the grand sweep of evolutionary history, and that I'd rather call Stephen "different" than "weird".
