Sequence-breaking and speed-running
For some excellent examples of metagaming, check out the Speed Demos Archive, where videos can be found of speedruns for many games, under various self-imposed conditions: 100%, minimal%, etc. These are not tool-assisted, these are pure player skill!
For metroid fans, I also highly recommend the Metroid 2002 site, which has video and text explanations of an incredible array of sequence-breaking tricks for nearly all of the metroid games. Picking up items out of order, exploiting engine quirks to jump farther or higher than is supposed to be possible, and using tricks to get past areas that are supposed to require an item, without having it yet. Speed runs of metroid games are amazing to watch, because they rely heavily on these tricks. Unless you've played the game a lot, you might not even recognize that the speed-run player is doing something that is supposed to be impossible!

Re:Ridley... isn't dead?
The only game in which Ridley "died" and later came back was the original Metroid, simply because Nintendo hadn't planned a sequel at the time. He wasn't in Metroid II, and while he was in the Metroid Prime games, he survived all of those encounters. He died for real in Super Metroid. The Ridley in Metroid Fusion is a copy of him that the X Parasite made.
So... I have no idea what they're going to do to bring him back in this game. (unless it's set before Super Metroid)
the whole adventure of finding new areas or trying to skip areas is pretty much gone in the 3D versions
Not at all. It's more difficult than it used to be, but there's still plenty of sequence breaking to be done. Take a look over at http://www.metroid2002.com/ .

Re:"Bugs" fixed
The games will most probably have all of the great tricks fixed that made Prime such an amazing game. Dash jumping, triple bomb jump, rapid fire missiles, and so on. It was great to take the game engine to its limits without technically cheating. Not only that, Prime1/2 had an amazing control scheme, 3 just used the wii remote as a gimmick IMO. For info check. http://www.metroid2002.com/home.php
Assuming that the US release of the "New Play Control" Metroid Prime is going to be mostly the same as the Japanese release that has been out for a while (and is easily playable in English by people with homebrew enabled Wii's) all of those things are still there.
I agree that the controls on the GC versions of Metroid were great, but they were the only first person perspective games on a console I could stand to play, and that was probably only *because* they were Metroid games.
The infrared aiming done by the Wiimote in MP3 is a lot more "keyboard and mouse" like, and once I got my hands on the Japanese remake of Metroid Prime and patched it to English I've only been able to even touch my GameCube Metroid discs once, and that was to see what it was like playing them with a controller instead of a Wiimote
What is was like was using a web browser without adblocking/mouse gestures/tabs once you have gotten used to having them. You just aren't able to go back to a clunky stiff and slow product once you have used a better version of it. -

Re:My favorite...
How about someone who does it intentionally? Morale of the story: never give root to people you only know online, because if you give it only to real life people, you can promptly kick their butt. In this case we just had to take 3 weeks to bring everything back and we've never heard from the psycho again.

Re:For real speed runs...Why do the Metroid videos on your site use savepoints? So that the player can go back and try a section of the game over again if they mess up, of course. That's "cheating" too, at least by Twin Galaxies rules.
Yawn, more confusion from a coward. First of all, who made TwinGalaxies god? Just because they publish a book doesn't make them more legit than me, I'm not in competition with them. Anyway about saves in games and TG... allow me to provide some links. Here is TG's press release from May 2003 about a new Metroid prime record in 1:46. Guess what, it was recorded WITH SAVES! Here is proof of that. And how about a run of the original Metroid. No saves in that game, so it's in a single seg.

Space jump firstIt's still possible to get the space jump first on the game that "fixed" scan dashes, but it's a little harder. Go here for full details.

It's about time
It's going to be great if Woo sticks even a little to the game. I haven't played the original NES I or II, but Metroid III got me hooked. I remember I could never beat the game when I was younger, but thanks to ZSNES and other emulators, I finally beat the game the other day with 89%. It's a very addictive game.
You can get ZSNES here.
You can get the super metroid rom here.
To see some amazing game play action (100% at 1 hour), see here. -
Re:Super Metroid
Don't think so.
You can check out Metroid 2002 though, they have a lot of Metroid videos in QuickTime format. Unfortunately not these particular records, but lots of other candy.
