linux as a workstationi made my 2 cents, showing one can work with linux as well as with windows (at my office) (at home i'm using linux exclusively, it's best to remove all of microsoft and just not use it anymore from one day to another)
i have chosen debian gnu/linux as it's easy to work with and has that superb funny text-adventure called apt-get
www.linuks.mine.nu/workstation
for the numbers: at home a sparc classic (linux), doing nfs and porn-get workstation linux (mom and me), firewall linux and a web/ssh/mailserver linux too and my brother uses windows98
i've got an installed linux on my aunts laptop farway (she using debian too
:)at work 5 servers on linux (dns+hd mirroring, nfs, samba, proftpd)
my workstation, and 6 more, 20 people about 50 machines

I think it's a guard against packet sniffing...
This isn't the type of thing intended to protect someone running a web browser from being identified (as your example suggests). This sounds to me like an additional layer of protection. Right now, we've got encryption to protect TCP/IP communication from eavesdropping via packet sniffing. With the type of processing power in the hands of our nation's (the George W. 'led' country) spy organizations as well as foreign powers, there's nothing to really confirm that your 4086 bit encrypted messages aren't being decoded in the 8th level of a building's basement somewhere. And that's by contemporary technology standards. For real spy organizations, it's often essential that encrypted communications NEVER be cracked as even a 10 year old message might comprimise the identity of a long-term mole. Right now, operations like echelon are sifting through packets and flagging suspicious communications. Just because something is encrypted doesn't mean it's ignored. It just gets set aside... saved for future reference. Probably not ALL encrypted transmissions. Just those from origins or to destinations determined to be of interest to the sniffers. The 'future' reference is an anticipated point in the future when technology allows for the unravelling of the message or an exploit is found for the encryption method (microsoft embedded hidden key comprimised... etc.).
Here's a tip for would-be encryption hackers: If you find a weakness in PGP, don't send Phil Zimmerman an e-mail about it.. no matter how densely encrypted it is. Not only will he never receive it, but it's likely to be the last message you'll send.

this post is from a pot smoker
No offense to the original poster (xtal), but his repetitious use of parentheticals is indicative of a chronic (pun intended) user of marijuana.
You may have witnessed a stoned individual at a party say something like, "Hey, I wonder if that girl will make out with me." Then he becomes self conscious when he realizes he said it out loud and said girl has probably heard him. In this case, xtal is posting in parentheticals when he doesn't realize he's vocalizing his own thoughts.

Re:MIRROR
Normaly I dont respond to AC's but you have insulted my coding abilities... If you took the time to think.. you would have come to a conclusion that sig.mine.nu is my development server for my production site http://www.gamesig.com but you didnt think about that did you.... Also if you want to see some of my code browse on over to http://dev.sig.mine.nu/ and hit up the sourceforge account and download my tar ball and look at it.. Until then don't insult my School or my coding abilities... all i am trying to do here is test my boxen.. and provide everyone a favor hot damn...

'normal linux' on the same hardware...
What 'normal linux' are you talking about? I've run MKLinux on my PowerComputing 120 for a few years now because it's the only linux distro that supports nubus powermacs. MKLinux will not run on PCI powermacs. So how can I compare the speed of 'normal linux' on the same hardware?

as a 'general proposition'...
Here's a most interesting little admission from EBAY's privacy policy:
As a general proposition, we do not sell or rent any personally identifiable information about you to any third party.
This is like Wallmart saying they stock American-made products "whenever they can".
This is another strong example of how ludicrous TRUSTE is. For EBAY to be TRUSTE certified and for that certification to carry any weight, this phrase should be "We do not sell or rent any personally identifiable information about you to any third party without your approval. As it stands now, who knows what they're doing? Just e-bay and 'the highest bidder'.

Sometimes shipping products require more money..
It could very well be that they are in need of more money to follow through and ship their chips. An IPO is a great way to generate needed capital.
I'd agree with the other poster, though. It's more lucrative to launch an IPO to a speculative investor market rather than have a track record that people will be buying into. Look at all the .com money that was plundered because speculators thought a site like mine would eventually generate gobs of revenue.
