ASL is still alive!
At least Advanced Squad Leader is still alive, published by Multiman Publishing, thanks in part to Curt Schilling...

Boardgamers Rock!
Boardgamers are a perfect example for Kickstarter as they're already used to various pre-order systems. For example, I play Advanced Squad Leader. Printing a niche product for a is a big risk for a small company who have day jobs, so they have their where they state a minimum number of said product that needs to be sold to break even - once enough people pledge to buy that product goes into the production queue. Win-win situation for everybody, and I'm looking forward to seeing more successful projects from it.

Re:Does Hasbro even make games still?Just to clarify... boardgames are alive and well, thank you very much. And, while it's hard to actually see them in stores (except for the very rare actual game store ), they are played by and marketed to all age groups, not just kids and not just parents.
I agree they may no longer be part of the mainstream, and that may be partly due to Hasbro just marketing their "classics". However, having played countless PC and console games myself, I always find it a welcome surprise what a sheer variety of boardgames exist, either in themes, mechanics, luck vs. strategy, etc etc.
If anyone is curious, I recommend a visit to this site .
BTW, (board)gamers will always remember Habro as the corporate giant that gobbled up Avalon Hill. Fortunately, a lot of Avalon Hills former line was saved, either by being reprinted by Hasbro, or bought by other companies (such as MultiMan Publishing )

RTS games perhaps?
In addition to Schilling's love of Everquest, he also started his own company to produce supplements/scenarios/modules for various tactical board games like Advanced Squad Leader. I wouldn't be surprised if one of this new company's first games is some sort of tactical combat ala Myth or a more traditional RTS game. Given Salvatore's involvement, it'd likely be some sort of Fantasy based venture.

Re:Bork Hasbro
Advanced Squad Leader has been "outsourced" to these guys. Runequest was never AH, but Chaosium - what AH might have had was the "split-off" Glorantha game, which was the Runequest setting without the system, IIRC.
That said, AH before the buyout wasn't too keen on reprinting their old titles like Gunslinger anyway. Ah, a fixed and updated Gunslinger - that would rock. -
Re: grognard-level wargames
... you might be interested in moving up to grognard-level wargames.
... where Advanced Squad Leader (ASL) by MMP (originally the game is by AH) is still the king of the hill. Online training at: http://vasl.org/ -
Squad Leader
Aspiring grognards may be interested in the Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit from Multiman Publishing. MMP has run out of it's first production run, though, but will be doing another run soon.
Yes, Squad Leader is still alive and kicking, and this is a very good way to learn it w/o reading the entire Big Damned Binder O' ASL Rules or taking a semester course in ASL.

Re:Pitchers are unhappy too
I understand your point, but please realize that its the ESPN staff writer who is sounding like a "dumb jock".
But Curt Schilling and Doug Glanville have been playing Everquest. Everquest for gods sake!
In fact, Curt Schilling is the owner of Multi-Man Publishing, a hex-based tabletop wargaming company, the developers of the Avalon Hill game Advanced Squad Leader.
Table-top wargaming is too geeky for a lot of geeks that I know.
He loved Advanced Squad Leader so much growing up as a kid that when computer wargames were starting to kill off hex-grid wargames he bought the company and resurrected it.
Curt Schilling is a great example of why one can be both a geek and a jock. -
