Re:Causality
"The law does not provide workers with the right to remove themselves from work situations that endanger health and safety without jeopardizing their continued employment."
"State governments were responsible for enforcement of the Factories Act. However, the large number of industries covered by a small number of factory inspectors and the inspectors' limited training and susceptibility to bribery resulted in lax enforcement.
The enforcement of safety and health standards also was poor."
I'll say it again. Shitass countries.

Re:Not really surprised
"Now, if Verizon or Quest or Comcast were to install a feeder line or a customer drop through my property and outside the easement without permission, you would have the makings of a civil suit."
not exactly. Similar to a property that is land-locked, you can't just put up a fence and say "screw you neighbors, you're not going anywhere!" Your backyard becomes an easement and they're legally allowed to drive across your lawn if that's the only route to get out of their property to a major road.
easement: "An easement is granted by the owner of the property for the convenience, or ease, of the person using the property. Common easements include the right to pass across the property, the right to construct and maintain a roadway across the property, the right to construct a pipeline under the land, or a power line over the land. "
So if Verizon needs to run it's lines across your backyard to reach your neighbor's house you're SOL, they can do that. -

Re:They're called, "Flowers"
Well, the symbolism should be obvious, and it was a lot better than the old tradition of giving them animal sex organs. If you think roses don't look very good in a vase after a week...
Just in case you don't think the poster is serious: he's dead serious.
Won't somebody think of the children^W butterflies^W raccoons?! -
Re:Crime will find a way
All well in good, in 20 years you will reduce crime. Though, if I want to reduce crime in the short term, I'd start by doing what Japan is doing in the short term:
"... Persons violating Japanese law, even unknowingly, may be expelled, arrested or imprisoned. ... In most drug cases, suspects are detained incommunicado, which bars them from receiving visitors or corresponding with anyone other than a lawyer or U.S. consular officer until after indictment, which may take as long as several months. Persons arrested in Japan, even for a minor offense, may be held in detention without bail for many weeks during the investigation and legal proceedings. "
Or, A spate of juvenile crimes over the past two years has prompted Japan's government to propose a new bill that would lower the criminal punishment age from 16 years to 14 years old. -
Where's Fembot?Funny that the list doesn't include the well-known term fembot.
Especially funny since the OED is considering adding fembot to the OED as a whole.
I recall a Slashdot reference to this as well, but could not find it searching on "fembot" with the Slashdot search function.

Get out the forks and knives
Long John Silver's should be giving a free jumbo shrimp to every person in the nation now. The thing is that a jumbo shrimp is 6" long.

Re:The problem
Spirited Away, however, it appears that Disney was literally trying to sabotage, out of fear it would overshadow Lilo and Stitch (also released that summer).
And Spirited Away still won the Super Bowl. -
Re:Cultural differences in game titles
Sei Naru Protein Densetsu sounds if anything cheesier in Japanese. Certainly cheesy as fuck. Dance Dance Revolution yadda yadda yadda sounds...well, like a game title. There's a whole (and well documented) culture of using English for effect in Japan which can lead to all sorts of strangeness which doens't sound like English as such to Japanese people, but fits within the vocabulary of decorative items / game titles etc. Can make for some weird language to Western ears (but then there's the whole issue of people in the west tatooing themselves with Chinese / Japanese characters they don't understand so who am I to badmouth Japanese use of English?)

Just to kill the analogy a little more.
Study: Drunk Folks Not As Reckless As You'd Think
I know. It's just a news article, but interesting to prove that someone can fathom the idea of being drunk as not a bad thing :) -
Re:Did you see the Grammy's?
I'm not sure if this article is implying that norah jones was picked by the program as a hit, but it makes sense. The program doesn't look for a musical style, it only looks for some pretty basic musical elements... pitch, harmony, tone, etc. I would think that it would open up a lot more music to the world than close it off.
