Re:SCO needs to do better homework
So now they've shown the code. By tomorrow morning, we'll have Linus, AT&T, Novell, etc showing that nothing is wrong with it. And most interestingly, according to the countdown, they only 3 hours to file suit if they're going to follow through on their 90 promise, yet its 7:45pm here in California and all courts east of here are closed. The only way they can file suit now is to do so in Hawaii where its only 4:45pm (they don't honor daylight savings time). Of course, they only have another 15min. I hope their legal counsel has offices in Hawaii.

SCO needs to do better homework
When you're too lazy to do your homework, what do you do? You cheat. And that's exactly what SCO's trying to do. Rather than do their homework and realize they have no case, they're trying to make others do it for them, and in a sense cheating. Case in point is this article which seems to pretty much clearly show that SCO is full of their own crap. There's a saying that if you tell a lie long enough, you'll start to believe it. And that's exactly what SCO is doing. They're trying to push the lies so that people will believe them. In reality, its organizations like IBM, Novell, AT&T, and groklaw that are doing all of SCO's homework for them. Heck, SCO even tried to compel IBM to show source code for AIX and Dynix which would effectively cause IBM to make SCO's case for them. This is turning into nothing more than sensationalism for SCO. Any bets on how much SCO stock is sold off tomorrow?

Precendence?
So does this mean the recent Pentium suits will be thrown out too???

Who Should They Sue?
1) The U.S. gov't. Why? Because embedded Linux is used in the radar systems of the FA-18 being sold on Ebay (reported recently on
/. ) which the U.S. gov't probably didn't have a SCO license for and which would put an unlicensed copy of proprietory code (Linux... at least according to SCO) into the public domain. Then all the taxpayers could ante up the money. Surely the taxpayers can afford more than the 5 billion they're asking of IBM before damages... after all our national deficit is in the trillions.
2) Burlington. Why? Because they were the first, early Linux adoptee and led the way for all the others to follow. They set a trend and should be taught a lesson.
3) Germany. Why? Because they have the largest Linux role-out to date. And according to recent news their Linux roll-out cost more than sticking with Windows which means they have money to throw away anyway.
4) Google. Why? Isn't it obivious? Google is the largest and most popular search engine *AND* they use Linux. M$ wants a piece of the pie. M$ is already funding SCO, though not directly. If SCO sues Google, M$ can step in and have more market dominance. Sure they'll get sued again, but the judge will bend over for them again, and that's assuming they can even find a judge to pursue M$.
5) Lindows. Why? Because they're in everyone's faces. Sue them and you solve the M$ vs. Lindows problem, get money from Mr. MP3.com that the RIAA and MPAA couldn't get and give it back to M$ to fund more monopolistic practices and to pay all the new coders M$ will need to patch the vulnerabilities that are about to flood the internet.
Considering the lack of *technical* judges out there, this is an ideal time for M$ to start monopolizing more than ever. With technical judges busy with IBM vs. SCO, SCO vs. Novell, RedHat vs. SCO, M$ vs. Lindows, etc they'll be hard pressed to find a judge with enough competence to understand things. This is the ideal time for M$ to step up make the movie AntiTrust a reality.

Re:Clarity
A bogus email address is the best spam filter around.
:) Honestly, though, considering the amount of spam I started receiving after using the Google Ad-Words, the little bit I get from this post will be all but inconsequential.

Clarity
It's worth pointing out that today isn't SCO's deadline to sue Linux users. Today's is the deadline imposed by SCO for all Linux users to ante up the money or face possible lawsuits from SCO. All things considered, I'd love to see them try. Considering the recent news of AT&T and Novell documents, I'd love for SCO to sue me, then lose their case(s) to Novell/IBM and let me sue back for extortion, loss of income, etc.
Hey SCO. I use Linux. I install Linux for 100's of companies a year. I failed to pay for any SCO licenses. Please sue me! My email is andrew@nccomp.com.

Re:Does software count?
Does the first *on topic* post count for claiming FP?
:)
I need a new job. I want to spend Valentine's Day with Jennifer Garner.

Irony of timing
How perfect... I had just stumbled across this article which mentions BitTorrent and has some interesting insight on legally circumventing the RIAA.

Sorry, but I'd take the Linux girl over her any day.

I hate it when people copy my ideas
I posted this article months ago, but no one seemed to care. Just wait til they start putting viruses into v-cards.

This is why they're suing him
Read this article, then substitute all instances of "terrorist" for "Scott Richter".
The article is about terrorists, but could easily be seen as a way for a spammer to make a lot of money. -
Mozilla anyone?
This is exactly the reason why I use Mozilla. Granted, Mozilla can have bugs too, but at least they patch them right away. They don't find out about them in December and still not have patches as of almost February as Microsoft does.
Just wait til someone deviant mixes the ideas here with a nice new IE exploit. It probably won't be all that long before a virus really does cripple the internet. -
More SCO PR crud...
"...today confirmed that it is experiencing a distributed Denial-of-Service (DDOS) attack" ???
Funny, www.sco.com comes up just fine for me. How are they "under a DDoS attack" that isn't supposed to happen until Feb 1st?
The whole press release was nothing but more PR crap with wonderful quotes like
"the SCO Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCOX), the owner of the UNIX(R) operating system" and "We do not know the origins or reasons for this attack, although we have our suspicions."
It must be Linus. :) He wrote the virus and released it via the 2.6 Linux kernel. ;) Actually, the way this virus works... via fast spreading and a timebomb makes you wonder if they were reading this article -

Can it get any better?
I'm not sure about the worst job out there... but this is one of the best I've seen for good money. I guess not all IT sectors are hurting. This consulting company seems to be doing pretty well.

Locked out at 3am
At my last company, the owners of the
.ws registry, I was asked to give all the root and other passwords to my boss cause "he hadn't asked for them for a while and you never know when something might happen". That night, I tried to check our BB site to see system status before going to sleep. I couldn't get in. An hour later, I realized I couldn't get into anything. My last check was waiting for me the next morning. It seems my position as the only IT guy made them afraid of retaliation... so they acted like @sses preemptively. So I started an IT consulting business and now own North County Computers. -
Perfect timing
I came across this article last week. Sounds like this is just was being waited for, hypothetically speaking). article
