mozilla's speed (vs firefox)
coincidentally, i just downloaded the nightly build last night after reading all the great stuff about it few weeks ago,and was amazed by the speed improvements. i had a bunch of apps (pdf viewer, thunderbird, licq, multiple konsoles) running while running kde, and the mozilla nightly build started in no more than a second, and page rendering was even faster than firefox. i run firefox mainly as a browser, and i do prefer the UI in firefox, but the mozilla nightly just absolutely wowed me.

1.0.2 anyone?
actually, (with 1.0.1 semi-officially released?) there's already files marked 1.0.2 on the ftp, like here, and in folders for the last couple of days. hmm any news on this, anyone? no one seems to have mentioned it. sorry if this is uh, a secret of some sort.

A better mirror?
For now, at least: ftpmoz.newaol.com/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/release
s /1.0/
Anyone know if the New York Times ad went through? Is it available to view anywhere? -
In other news.... (really)Firefox 1.0 RC2 is out.
This should be the last release candidate [RC] before the big 1; because in theory all the bugs should have been ironed out in this RC, but, nonetheless, Mozilla.Org is asking users who want to beta-test to download it and, in particular, check for bugs in these areas in RC2:
- authentication (especially over SSL)
- extension installation via update.mozilla.org and other sites
- MacOS X builds
- the new re-implementation of software update.
Some non-English RC2 builds are avaliable too according to Mozillazine. (Where are they?) For more info check out Ben Goodger's (lead developer's) blog.
For the rest of us, 1.0 final is supposed to be coming out in less than a week--then we can all party
;-). -

And now for some helpful links:
And now for some helpful links:
Note: If you click on download links for firefox on the main page of mozilla.org, you get 0.9.2. The link on the firefox page @ http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ still gets you 0.9.1. The link on the main page for the Linux version of Firefox still points to version 0.9.1. It seems that if you want 0.9.2 for Linux you'll have to compile it yourself.
0.8
0.9rc
0.9
0.9.1
0.9.2
And a direct link to the newest release for the really lazy:
Windows 0.9.2
The question is, what is the shellblock.xpi for?
Does Bugzilla know? Sorry, links to Bugzilla from Slashdot are disabled. Ook! -
Re:Where's Open Source when you need it?
Doesn't look like it runs on any of the platforms I run. AIM, Yahoo and MSN all run on OSX, AIM is available as a Slackware package, and it looks like I could get Yahoo to work on Slackware with some hacking (wouldn't surprise me if the next release has a Slackware package).

Re:What I want to know is...
But AOL mirrors are actually the best mirror going!

Re:Other Debian packages?
I haven't seen any debs yet, but you can grab the standard tarball. It should work just fine on a stable or testing Debian distribution.

What about Xft?
That HOWTO seems to ignore the best option for getting pretty fonts on X, Xft.
I am currently running Redhat 8.0 with an XFT version of Mozilla, and I must may my screenies are much prettier.
With Xft, FreeType, and some good TrueType fonts, I finally have a Linux desktop with fonts prettier than WinXP. -
AOL RedHat MirrorRedHat mirrors can be found in the damnest places:

Re:Dammit!
This is going to sound like a joke at first, but AOL has a fast mirror that doesn't seem to get bogged down. It's here if you want to try it: ftp://redhat.newaol.com/
Enjoy. -
I found it!
I found it! it's a miracle!!!
I found the Real Player 8 download on their site instead of the RealOne Crap

Update AIM to 4.5.355 before installing 10.110.1 breaks some important features in AIM:
--- Really important broken features ---
- ads (whatta bummer eh? =)
--- Ok haha, the actually important broken feature:
- auto-upgrade
There are no new features since the 4.5.237 release, just fixes for 10.1.

NS6/win32 rocks!
It's great! Unexpectedly! After using the various Mozilla builds on Linux, and having the NS6 installer crash/hang/etc, I wasn't expecting much. But it's actually really fast. And themes available are not too shabby.
And that guy's URL was perhaps too specific. All platforms are at ftp://ftpnscp.newaol.com/pub/ net scape6/english/6.0
... "newaol" ... hmmm ...
