Not at all. You're doing a fine job of explaining. You're making an assumption about needing a thick wall surrounding a craft to protect from radiation. Radiation isn't the nemesis most people think. It's an energy source to be harnessed and used, and by using it it wouldn't reach the inside of the craft in a destructive form. Undoubtedly the energy that combines to form lightning could be harnessed and siphoned off before forming into lightning bolts. That's a really good, pre-emptive solution. Progress seems very slow to people bright enough to 1) see there's a problem then 2) try to fix it. It's sort of like WAR which many times comes from a serious LACK OF COMMUICATION.
