Been there!
What an interesting question, I've done that before, mostly out of nostalgia. And, of course, frustration with the upgrade treadmill.
There's essentially nothing you can't do with a 16-bit windows, it's what people worked with and played with, so there's a bit of everything .You should install Win32s, WinG, Video for Windows, Trumpet Winsock.
Honestly I'm surprised you found it hard to track down old software, there's a pretty huge scene around it.
You can get pretty much every OS and application here: http://winworldpc.com/library_m1.shtml
This is also a great site to get old software: http://www.oldversion.com/
Moar: http://wiki.oldos.org/Downloads/Windows3x
http://gaby.de/win3x/esoft.htmThere are some surprisingly modern browsers available for 3.1, grab Opera 3.62 (also Netscape 4 and IE 5.5), and try Calmira for a Win9x type of GUI running under 3.1 - put the default XP wallpaper on that, and you will fool a lot of people
:)
I once hacked XP to natively run the NT 3.51 shell on startup, instead of Windows Explorer. It wasn't hard.DOSBox sucks for Windows, though, you should probably just run a VM, added performance. You can find some Windows games on abandonware sites, Civilization 2 was a good one

Re:Go Google!
Yes -- same thing happened here.
I've gotten two dmcas. First one went to my shared hosting provider, who cut off my http, on a friday around 5pm, and it had to stay off until I could contact them monday.
Second time, I just got an email from my vps provider, linode.com, passing it along, and saying "handle it". I actually put up a forum thread on their site praising them for it.
If any of you want a good provider, go with Linode. The staff is great, service is great... no real negatives to it.
In case you were wondering, here is a link to the first DMCA notice I recieved: http://www.oldos.org/history/oms/letter.htm. Of course, that was two years ago. We're back up, and legal at http://www.oldos.org/. -

As a former sports editor for a newspaper...
I understand the need to hsve integrity in what is reported. Any person trying to stifle a collection of facts (which is what HardOCP had/has), should be strung up like a traitor.
Now, if there was libel or untruth involved, I'm the first to say they need to be punished... but... don't try to hide your own faults by beating up on a website. Nobody likes a sore loser (or vaporware company).

Re:Service Pack vs Version
Windows NT 3.1, released in 1993 to match the current version of the other Windows line, had 3 service packs. I think this is the first time it was used, although there may have been some for Microsoft Lan Manager. And I think the updates for 95 were called OSRs.
FYI, when the MS ftp server is up you can still get SP3 for NT3.1 from them, or you can get it here -
Or...
Get that and more at

Web designers are in a lose/lose
I hear all these posts saying "why do you not care about 56k users, webmasters, boo hoo"... well, the bottom line is, it's a lose/lose situation.
I run the site www.oldos.org, and I moved to a layout which loads probably about 4 times faster than the old layout, just to get fussed by a ton of people saying they hate it.
Make up your mind! Do you want fast or dancing babies? -
Re:Will it run bash?
THAT is awesome. Post how to do that on my forum

The best realplayer was... *drumroll*
Realplayer G2 w/RealJukebox.
Great design. I loved it... then it started happening *cue sad music*... The upgrades... they said "RealONE" was the thing... but all it did was take away my ability to listen to crap online for free.
Free Carolina Hurricanes webcast? Gone. $29.95 a month.
Free Carolina Panthers webcast? Gone. Buy NFL Field Pass.
Free racing webcasts? Gone.
Now, I don't mind ads. Heck, I run a website, I live on ads [cheap plug]go to oldos.org and clickyclicky on my google text ads [/cheap plug]. I wouldn't mind listening to ads during the game, watching cheap flash ads before listening, or anything like this. How come TV can survive without needed subscriptions (skin-e-max and h-blow excluded), but internet webcasts can't?
