Re:It blocked installs till 10 AM local time too
I play One Must Fall 2097
According to this site: http://robyrt.coolserver.net/omf2097.html
The official page of the makers website is http://www.omf.com/
Which is a spam/hosted search site. Yeah, you're solution is much better.
Keep playing obsolete games from companies that don't exist.
FYI, the games I'd like to play require $5 deck of cards, cash and several friends. You'd probably balk at having to purchase a deck of cards since you can "print your own"
;) (Joke!!!) -
Valuable Life Skills
Don't think of just entertainment, choose games that will teach the children valuable life skills. For example:
Teach them to Rule the World: Freeciv
Teach them the value of running over hookers: GTA 1&2
Teach them the awesomeness of fighting robots: One Must Fall 2097
Teach them to conquer the world in a different way: C&C Red Alert 3
And finally, teach them to conquer the world of worms (you never know): Wormux -
OMF
Did anyone else think of One Must Fall 2097/Battlegrounds when they read that headline? Although I think the OMF robots were 90ft

Can you say...
Real life One Must Fall?

Re:SNES Dead?
Oddly enough, I'm better with a keyboard than a gamepad/arcade stick... Though I think I can blame marathon sessions of One Must Fall for setting the precedent there. MAME and SNES9x just honed the ability ^^;

Re:Sounds familiar.....
I have to admit i haven't played MOO2, only the original, but it looks like they're really going for some serious science here. Stuff like removing species that are overly humanoid and adding species that are completely alien ("life, Jim, but not as we know it")... They're adding the concepts of "established space lanes", similar to the way we used to navigate the oceans during the early ages of exploration and trade. This will make intercepting invasion fleets a lot more practical and interesting. Essentially they're taking the concepts of MOO and making them more realistic, allowing very, very fine-grained control over everything that happens in your empire while still letting newbies come in and have a reasonable game with everything on the default setting...
I'm looking forward to seeing what it's like. Is there still room for a turn-based strategy game in this day and age? Are people going to be amazed by the (attempted) realism or just bored by it? Is it going to be too complex? I think it's a really brave move... These fan-driven game developments are really something special (see the new online multiplayer One Must Fall for another example). Whether people get into it or not, i think it's definitely going to be something very unique.

Re:Not sure how long this will stay up, so...
How about the movie Toys? This evil General guy has kids playing flight simulator-like games that are acutually controlling real planes and blowing up real buildings and such, but the kids just think it's a game.
I've recently re-discovered One Must Fall: 2097 where you control a huge robot and fight against the computer, so it came to mind, as well. Okay, so it's not OGL. It's just low-resolution video modes that require at least a 386dx40 to work well. But it's still a fun game. -
Diversions Entertainment...
..did the right thing to combat the piracy of their 1994 game, OMF: 2097; They made it freely available from their official website.
In addition to being officially legal-free, it is also a great game, and I suggest you try it! (Oh how their server will not like this)
You could also stick around and look at info on their upcoming game, OMF: Battlegrounds. -

Re:What about other types of software?"Nobody seems to mention or pay much attention to other types of software that are available as abandonware - more usually with the blessing of the original parent company."
Right you are!
One Must Fall: 2097 - That's right folks! You can download the FULL OMF:2097 legally from the manufacturer. (Also check out OMF Battlegrounds which is in a work in progress.)
Also check out this Legal Abandonware site. It only has games/apps that were formally released as abandonware. Here you can get Abuse, Betrayal at Korondor, Dink Smallwood, Inner Worlds, Jetpack, Squarez, Skyroads, ZZT and more. Have fun!

Re:Reality surpasses (game) Fantasy
Have you seen the sequal? It looks like it might finally be completed soon.

Re:Watcom
If they came out with anything like that again, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
One Must Fall: Battlegrounds is currently under production by Rob Elam (the original author of OMF) of Diversions Entertainment.
The short of it is that he left Epic after Mark Rein couldn't be convinced to do an OMF sequel, and is now working on his own. Release date is unknown at present.
