OpenFiler?
How is this any different than the OpenFiler Project?

Openfiler?
http://openfiler.org/ ? I'm about to give this a shot

Check out OpenFiler
http://www.openfiler.org/ This is a NAS distro that has a lot of features that can be seen on commercial NAS boxes such as NetApp solutions. One of the features that could be very beneficial are customizeable snapshoting capabilities which allow for instant data retrieval in the event you have some sort of data corruption. I have tested this software several times and found it very easy to set up and configure. There are plenty of other bells and whistles that I wont go into detail about but it is one solution I would definetly look into.

What about openfiler?
The major issue is pricing; the 1 TB is about $1300. Now, for the DIY crowd, yes, using Linux you could very easily put together a RAID 5, 1 TB machine for not that much more -- and you are probably going to do it anyway. But for the target market, especially situations in which the IT resources are limited, it's a great machine for the ease of setting it up.
How about Openfiler? Not quite DIY, probably a decent compromise. And since it supports doing automated back-ups as well as has the serial port to work with a UPS system, you don't have to worry about the whole crapping out and losing all of your data. All in all, a great unit. Price is a concern, but a minor one.
Openfiler also supports checkpointing. Price is almost never a "minor" concern. -

Use openfiler. It is good.

Re:Openfiler is what you want.
There is a pretty large difference between "works with" and "supported on". If you look through the forums and such you'll see that it works on FC2 too.

Re:Redhats trademark and competitors
Certainly
... 1. RHEL like OS is being deployed and tested for free ... on much more equipment than it would otherwise be. This leads to more potential RHEL customers. We also supply bug reports to the RHEL bugzilla so they see and can fix many more problems.
2. There are 4 or 5 open source projects that are based on a CentOS base:

http://asteriskathome.sourceforge.net/

3. There are many customers who want an Enterprise Linux that they don;t have to pay for ... we are providing them a service.
4. That is how the GPL works :) -
Openfiler?
Openfiler is very friendly, and getting more polished every day. I'm not keen on building an "enterprise service" on FC2, but I'm sure it can be implemented on other distros.

Re:Good start!
Looks like NDMP support is on the cards. The roadmap mentions NDMP.
