  1. Arrrgh! Goodbye Godspeed... on Public Domain from Outer Space · · Score: 1

So, here I was, happily downloading the last few live recordings of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, when this gets posted to slashdot. I DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT THE MOVIE, I JUST WANT MY MUSIC BACK!

Poor Archive.org. :( Well, I really hope you lot all really do want this film, and aren't just leeching it "because it's there".

Openfiler is very friendly, and getting more polished every day. I'm not keen on building an "enterprise service" on FC2, but I'm sure it can be implemented on other distros.

  4. Flow on effect on Circuit Boards + Soldering Iron == Terrorist? · · Score: 5, Insightful

Now, I don't want to come off as anti-american (though it is fairly easy to feel that way these days), but do you US citizens realise that this sort of stuff is starting to flow on to the rest of the world? Many of us live in countries not governed by religious, paranoid, low-iq, war-fetishists. We like that we don't need to go around pretending there are terrorists everywhere in order to "exact vengeance" for ONE incident (which, lets face it, PALES next to some of the things that the US have done to other countries) 3 years ago.

Because the US is so influential on the western political stage though, we almost have to fall in line with your head lunatic. PLEASE get rid of this fucker. PLEASE vote for someone with some intelligence. And also, if you know your neighbours or friends are morons who will vote for any asshole who can wave a flag and spout some jingoistic bollocks, please have them killed. Cheers.

  6. Re:Bite the bullet with WINE on Running a Business on Open Source Software? · · Score: 1

Not sure it was defeatist? Quite the opposite I thought. I see giving in and running closed source software as defeatist - the easy option, if you like.

Anyway, you're ignoring way too much - making money from support, and all the other millions of arguments available that are pro-OSS. It's not just a tangible product, like a can of coke. That said, I'll leave it - we clearly have very different views on this. :)

  7. Re:Bite the bullet with WINE on Running a Business on Open Source Software? · · Score: 1

While I agree with your general sentiment, and the pragmatism that it is based on, this bugged me:

Don't be a jerk instisting on all open source, you have a buisness to run, and that means spending money once in a while.

    1. Why does money have to be a factor? I'd really like to live in a world where all software was open sourse, even if "free as in beer" software disappeared completely. It's about Freedom, not money. To quote a coworker of mine, Licensing is the devil.

    2. If everyone just "bites the bullet" and uses non-OSS, proprietary software, there is no motivation for people to create good OSS alternatives. Don't hammer the guy for wanting an ideal situation - we all do. Should we all give up?

  8. Re:Interesting.... on Linux Workstations in a Windows Domain? · · Score: 1

If you want to take the "right tool for the job" angle, I was just wondering why he wants to bend over backwards fighting to get linux workstations to talk to a solitary windows server which is only used for file and print, when in my opinion, the "right tool" would be replacing the win2k server with a Linux server running samba 3, and then be able to support windows and linux workstations with no problems. Also, you have the added bonus of no longer being locked in to proprietary protocols. Sounds like the best tool for the job to me?

  9. Re:20 cents a meg, anyone..? on Noticed Welchie/Nachi in Your Bandwidth Bill, Yet? · · Score: 1

The reason for that is Telecom NZ. An ex-SOE spun off into a private company, who have an effective monopoly on DSL service provision due to the fact that they own 90% of the copper in the ground. There are other providers, but most lease the copper (or just the DSL service) from Telecom. Zcat is exaggerating slightly with his 500M allowance - there are 128k and 256k flatrate plans available with high/no caps, but most businesses opt for the 4-7Mb/s "full" capped plans - and the caps are low, and the costs are high.

  10. Re:WTF??? on Open Source Microsoft Exchange Replacements? · · Score: 1

I'm guessing the poster meant just POP3.
And they're correct - though not for any reason based on technology. POP3 email is stored and managed on the client. This creates headaches for corporate users who want their mail "anywhere", and for corporate administrators, who are unable to fulfill the request to "restore my mail that I lost when my hdd got nuked". There may be nothing wrong with POP3 as a protocol, but it does raise manageability issues.

Well, we've enjoyed working with you. Don't let the door smack you in the ass on the way out!

Did they actually NEED Exchange for the groupware features? Or was it just a mailchucker? If the latter there is no justification for such a waste of resources.

I just cannot understand the motivation to do so. It's like tagging - pointless destruction of property that achieves nothing.

I guess if I thought for one second people might think about how junky most MS product offerings are, and replace them with high quality Open Source or Free software, I might see a point - but no one ever seems to.

However, what I meant was if they turned up at your door, and you said 'Yeah, I bought a chemistry set, it's over there by the textbook on "teach yourself chemistry"' - ie, were completely open about it, would they still drag you off for a beating and an interrogation?

I really hate the stuff I see on the news every night - I feel like finding "Dubbya" and beating him to death with recordings of his own moronic utterances. For better or for worse, the US is the most powerful nation on earth politically, and its policies/actions do have a major effect on the rest of us. And who is running the show? Do you honestly think "suits" would turn up at someone's door over such a thing? And if they did, would it be a problem if you had nothing to hide? Could you get compensation for invasion of privacy and/or intimidation?

I'd be interested to hear anecdotal or documented evidence of this happening.

Things here in New Zealand tend to follow the US sooner or later and I'd like to be prepared for this sort of crap if/when they do. :-/

  24. Just say No! :) on Psst! Eight Bits Gets You "The Two Towers" In China · · Score: 5, Interesting

Well, I don't believe anyone who really appreciates movies would want these. Half the time, they don't even watch them! It's just a status/ego thing to be able to say "oh, I've got that. Had it for weeks *yawn*".

What interests me is that I've always thought this was quite a "western" mentality, grounded in materialism and greed. Are the Chinese just the same? Or do they have other motivations?
