Funny!I submitted this story (with download links in it) and more information about the widgets, but it got rejected (Monday February 06, @11:46PM, and again Tuesday February 07, @01:34PM). I wonder why this one got accepted, I was beginning to think that because it didn't mention Firefox or Google it was never going to get published. PR1 of Opera 9.0 was rejected in a similar fashion when that was released.
Here was the text, with bonus download links!
Opera Software has released the second preview edition of their next generation browser, codenamed Merlin. Some of the highlights include Widgets (including ones that let you read the latest Slashdot stories, or the lastest Bash.org quotes, calculator, etc), integrated Bittorrent, thumbnail preview for tabs, and the ability to "Block Content", which lets you remove items from a website. Download for Windows, Mac, and Unix.

What next? CEO to swim Atlantic again?
Heh..
In reference to the previous ver 8, the CEO promises to swim from Norway to USA, with a brief stopover for mom's hot coffee in Iceland. That is, if the download reaches 1,000,000 in 4 days..
Apparently it did! I remembered downloading a copy, in a bid to see such sport, but alas..
Press Release
Previously, it was reported that the attempt failed due to various reasons, including physical condition. Let's hope he's is fitter this time around.
Yeah, no malfunctioning support raft.
Swim Attempt Report
Sincere regards to Opera Team..
-PS Crazy stunts like these are really fun! -

Opera Software the first to pay?
Opera announced an agreement with BitTorrent the other day. Opera first included BitTorrent in 8.02 and then 8.10 (which was never officially released), but then went quiet about it. Now BitTorrent showed up again in Opera 9.0 Preview 2. Was this because BitTorrent approached Opera and wanted them to pay up? Is Opera the first to pay BitTorrent Inc. for the "privilege" of using the trademark?

Re:google
And the only things Google's good for are serving ads, aggregating your personal information to serve you more ads, and rewriting otherwise-passable native applications in JavaScript. I take Google as seriously as you take Wired nowadays.

Opera and BitTorrent
In semi-related news, BitTorrent Inc. and Opera announced today that Opera 9 will offer BT capabilities. I do remember that a beta of Opera 8 had BitTorrent built in, but that hasn't been present in versions released since (i.e. since it went freeware).

Re:Firefox is the most unstable program in common
Firefox is for people who care about free as in freedom.
For those of us who care about having a browser that doesn't suck, there's Opera. No memory leakage, no unexplained CPU use, and now that it's properly free as in beer, there's no reason to torture yourself with Firefox. There just isn't. -
Re:Link? You can follow the link in my
.sig, sign up for the game and look at the dynamic map in the info menu. But here's the text:
You seem to be using IE as a web browser. The dynamic map will not work
with IE, including the AOL version. This is due to IE being buggy.
The dynamic map is proper CSS 2.0 and even verifies without warnings
as HTML 4.01.
We suggest that you upgrade your browser to something like
Mozilla or Opera
or any other modern, standards-complient browser. We recommend Firefox, the
most recent Mozilla browser:
If you are, in fact, using one such and have just configured it to identify
itself as MSIE, or if you insist to see how IE mangles proper Internet
files, go ahead, but don't complain. -
Re:Whoa, hold the phone!
InPro's patent described the use of a proxy server which downloaded data from the Web in response to a request from a device, then transposed the data to match the specific size and resolution of the device, according to The Times. The patent in question was granted in 1996.
Isn't this precisely what Opera Mini does?
And I wonder if the timing between the ending of this case and the release of Opera Mini is any sort of coincidence? -
Re:"Quick Tab"
As I wrote about here, Opera has had this type of functionality for a long time. Unlike foXpose, in Opera you can actually use (scrolling, following links) the tiled windows without remaximizing them.
-
Re:ACID2 test?
Opera 9 is getting close, and will pass it by the time it's ready for release.
If IE7 is that bad - IE6 with tabs - it's going to make life hell for us web developers. :( -

I think you are a behind-the-times anonymous coward.

Re:mobile internet, not much fun, even if improved
Have you tried using Opera Mini for Treo to view Slashdot?
-
Use CSS
If your site is written properly, i.e. using CSS for layout, then at the very least you can simply disable CSS for mobile visitors, not very pretty but doesn't block any content. The best option would be to have a style sheet with it's media set to handheld to tailor the content they see. Hide unnecessary stuff, and format the rest in a compact fashion:
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="handheld" href="handheld.css" />Opera is useful for testing these styles (Shift+F11) and the Web developers toolbar adds this feature to firefox. A very well made site compatible with handhelds is none other than opera.com, everything on their site has a well optimised handheld version.

Thats all good
But wtf does this post have to do with opera and wtf is opera trying to get women to join the tech field, well besides the two nice rounded supple obvious reasons.
-
reference implementation
some implementations (though not reference impls) are:
XHTML1.0
- Mozilla Firefox
- Safari supports it but doesn't advertise in the accepts header
- IE7 but it won't support the mime type "application/xml+xhtml"
XHTML1.1
- Mozilla Firefox 1.5
- Opera
XHMTL2.0
- X-Smiles
http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Firefox_1.5_f or_Developers
http://opera.com/features/
http://www.xsmiles.org/features_xhtml2.html
I don't notice any browsers mentioning support for HTML5. Could you share some information about the current support for HTML5, I think it would be interesting to play with.
XHTML support is growing. Which is better? time will tell. -

Nothing.
"We believe in respect for our users". "We believe in privacy" - http://www.opera.com/company/vision/
I can believe that their statement is true. They say they support open standards and they do (Opera helps W3C and WHATWG), they say they dislike patents and they haven't patented anything they've invented. Opera seems to be quite honest company.

Re:Opera for Pocket PC
By downloading the Opera for Windows Mobile Pocket PC edition http://opera.com/products/mobile/products/winmobi
l eppc/
Note this is not the same as the mobile browser listed in the article... that one uses Java and will run on almost anything that uses Java. This one is actually an application written for the Pocket PC. I used the one that this slashdot article is talking about on my Palm Treo 600 (not for long tho, found it slow and too basic) For my new Axim x51v I use the Pocket PC version.
As for is this a reason to not buy a smartphone? Uhhhh No. -

Actually the Pocket PC port recently went into BETA.
Available for WM 2003 and WM 5.0.

Wow!
Wow! People were right, they really changed the branding of IE6, and man is it full of bugs! Look at how much RAM it uses!
Maybe you should check out IE8.5, you can get it here. -
Re:A vote for uTorrent
foxit reader for pdf viewing is the free small fast pdf viewer for windows...
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
also opera claims to be the fastest web browser ever. and it does not support all the rootkits that IE does. http://www.opera.com/ at 3.5 mb and free, its smaller and faster than firefox on my p233. -
Opera 9p1 is universal binary
They won't, but Opera has universal binary ready anyway.

Re:Easy Solution.
Actually, the whole smoking out tailgaters thing runs counter to the high MPG thing, and would run counter to "as low as possible emissions" - except as long as I'm not a superpolluter like the H2 drivers, I'm OK with it.
Oh, and one of the huge things that I like about my car is that I bought it to run homebrew biodiesel in, and I'll be making it soon. It's a nice big "fsck you" to Big Oil and those that are in charge of having our soldiers get killed to get cheap oil.
Looks do matter to me - I don't want anything gaudy, yet I want it to look sharp. I don't want it to be rusted, so I'm going to get all of the rust taken care of.
Here's pics of my car, FWIW: http://my.opera.com/bhtooefr/albums/show.dml?id=22 244
Now, this is what I'd want, if I could afford it: (pic one: http://fitzski.com/jetta/images/20051007-cleaned.u p-05.jpg - pic two: http://fitzski.com/jetta/images/20051008-scenic.dr ive-09.jpg) Unfortunately, that's not my car :( -

http://www.theopencd.org/ Download the 650MB ISO image file and burn to CD share with your friends who have less bandwidth to the internet to install FireFox broswer and Thunderbird e-mail client on their Windows PC.
Make a WMF virus variant that pops open the http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ website to give the user an opportunity to click "Install FireFox" for windows. Hey I did not force him to install anything, but just pointed it out.
Remember, Its the thought that counts! I was just making it easier for the end user to use his or her computer Virus free.

Re:The dot com bubble taught us one thing ...
If the dot com bubble taught us anything, it's that "If it's free on the internet, it's unreliable and fully controlled by somebody who will run it into the ground".
I would hope not. Otherwise the GIMP, that universe-in-a-box Celestia (which I do admit was held back a bit when main man Chris Laurel took a long break; it has a lot less bugs on Windows now that he's back) and newly-ad-and-cost-free Opera wouldn't be on my PC anymore.
All quite reliable to me (on Windows, mind you, so something was done right)--oh, and GMail. Amazing. Don't like text ads? Get a bigger screen. ;)
The key is looking at sites, blogs, forum comments, and the like, and reading what works for some and what just sucks. Good friends help, too. -
Re:Anyone can play this game.
You missed some!
Network
putty for SSH (even commandline SCP which rules), wget for sucking down the web, opera if you don't like firefox, and some form of bittorrent client, like bitcomet.
Utilities
gvim, unxutils or in a pinch some downloads from the gnuwin32 tools, tools from SysInternals.
Multimedia
Don't forget Mediaplayer classic (MPC) which by happy coincedence is included in the k-lite mega codec pack (from codecpack.nl).
Security
grisoft AV, tools from SysInternals. -
Re:Imitation is the sincerest form...
I wonder if they licensed this one:
http://opera.com/products/devices/markets/stb/
Note such things does not have huge brand on them like "Opera" or something. Like new Nokias only have "web browser" instead of Opera while it is still Opera. -
Re:OT: Can we get a font change?
Sure.* Tools|Options or Edit|Preferences, Content tab, change default font, click Advanced, and change the font for the appropriate languages. I'm not sure as which one Slashdot comes up--because I have all my fonts set to the same thing--but this does work.
*- Disclaimer: This is for Firefox 1.5. Opera's configuration is similar, though may involve using a CSS. -
Re:What about Online Bookmarks?
Well, it's been suggested for a sort of "roaming profile". It's currently been implemented by a third party under the name OSync in the forums - as a script that supposedly works in Windows, Linux and MacOSX.
See: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id= 104071 -
Re:URL Autocomplete
The real reason I moved back to Firefox after I tried Opera (and I gave it a good month) was because one day, Gmail just stopped working. On different days, both at work and at home, I could not log back into Gmail no matter what I did (short of reinstalling Opera, because I'm just too lazy to do that). This also happened to a coworker; he switched back too.
I have an even better idea. If you like Opera, it'd probably be easier to search for your problem rather than customize a different browser. The Opera forums are a great place to find information and to report bugs.
(For what it's worth, I remember hearing about problems with GMail on the first technical preview of Opera 9.) -
Re:Merlin
It would totally be THE browser if it had a more powerful, open extensions API.
What's wrong with what they already have? I don't see why something like Foxytunes wouldn't be possible. In fact, Plugger, which is listed on that page, seems very similar.
-
Re:Serious? Joking?
Based on this, it would seem that Jon S. von Tetzchner does indeed have a sense of humor, so I'd guess that this was a strange attempt at some form of a joke. I think he's suggesting that they read Slashdot, so if any were actually interested, they could post here, and that's the joke?
But I could be wrong. I dunno. I really just wanted to post that link.
-
Re:who knew
"Wow! So this means that these Dashboard widgets can run on my mobile phone?"
In theory at least. -
Re:Uh... Opera Mini?
The operator support that is needed for Opera Mini and other web applications is an Internet (not WAP) access point. This is effectively the name of the Internet server the phone must connect to. Getting this configuration can be easy or hard depending on the operator and the age of the phone. If you don't have it built-in many operators can just send a SMS message to your phone to install it. If you get no useful help from the operator this incomplete list of known access points in the world might help. You also need a plan that allows for Internet data.
