  10. Burn crude Palm Oil to generate electricity on Could Nuclear Power Wean the U.S. From Oil? · · Score: 1

    Original article from here.

BURN CRUDE PALM OIL TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY

The launch of Tenaga Nasional Berhad's (TNB) power plant, which uses crude palm oil as fuel, marks an important milestone in the country's power sector. Malaysia has started conducting feasibility study on burning palm oil diesel fuel in its power plants. Blended with medium fuel oil, the fuel mix has been successfully tested at the TNB Generation Sdn Bhd power station in Prai, Penang.

Palm oil, traditionally used for cooking and making soap, is the latest addition to the country's power source, though on a limited scale. This is in line with the government policy of introducing a fifth fuel policy; fifth fuel is meant to mean renewable energy. As of last year, 80 percent of the country's power supply was generated using gas, 10.6 percent hydroelectric, 6.6 percent coal and the remaining using medium fuel oil. In February this year, TNB was approached by the Malaysian Palm Oil Board to jointly conduct a study on the possibility of using palm oil to generate power. TNB's research arm, called TNB Research Sdn Bhd, took three weeks to complete its preliminary study. Starting from March 28, 2001, the national utility's power plant in Prai has been using palm oil to generate power, which was claimed to be the first in the world. (Background: In February, crude palm oil (CPO) prices hit a low of RM697 per ton with the buildup on palm oil stocks rising to 1.5 million tons. As a result, the Malaysian Palm Oil Board signed a memorandum of understanding with CPO producers for the supply of the produce at RM725 per ton. The CPO is then sold to TNB at RM700 per ton, with the board subsidizing the price difference).

Blended with a ratio of 20 percent crude palm oil and 80 percent of medium fuel oil, the mixture is burnt in a boiler and has a capacity of generating 120 megawatts of electricity.

The major advantage of using CPO is it results in less pollution, containing less than 0.05 percent sulfur dioxide during power generation, compared to three percent using medium fuel. Palm oil is also renewable and takes only between three to five years for plants to mature.

However, on the downside, CPO is not an economically-viable option. The gross heating value- the amount of electricity that can be generated- for palm oil is 40,000 kJ per kg, compared to 42,600 kJ per kg for medium fuel oil and 45,000 kJ per kg for diesel. Furthermore, CPO is 16 percent more expensive than using diesel and costs 38 percent more compared to medium fuel oil. Under the pilot project in Prai, the Finance Ministry will subsidize the difference in power generation cost.

Malaysian CPO will be sent to a United Kingdom-based research center, Power Generation, for further testing.

    How many Planets - 9 ? or 11?

Ancient Greeks wrongly included head of the solar family and moon, our earths satellite. They counted planets as follows : 1) Sun, 2) Moon, 3) Mars, 4 ) Mercury, 5) Jupiter, 6) Venus and 7) Saturn. Indians till date include two more : Rahu and Ketu, mere shadows of earth and moon. To the five genuine planets modern astronomy added the Earth after being (identified with planet class in the medieval age) and latest discoveries of Neptune, Uranus and Pluto (as late as 19th century). This brought back the count to 9.

This received a jolt a decade or two ago. Indian astronomer J.J Rawal in 1978 found that the farthest planets Uranus and Pluto were making significant deviations from established orbits and explained them in terms of gravitational influence of two as - yet unseen planets, whose sizes and orbits he estimated. It was only in 1988 his proposal got due publicity when NASA confirmed possibility of Rawals outermost planet (or the 11th), by analysing their own data gathered through their various space missions. NASAs computations of mass and orbit tallied with Rawals with refinements and additional details. Nevertheless, NASA could not guess his 10th planet. Early this year (1999) NASA brought the 11th planet to the limelight again among astronomical community and general public. However, both the planets of Rawals still remain unconfirmed optically.

Has Quran anything to say about the number of solar planets? Yes, indeed!

When Joseph said unto his father : O my father! Surely I saw in a dream eleven planets and the Sun and the Moon....... (Yusuf: 4)

One may note the following points of immense significance.

    * Quran does not confuse the planets (kawakib) with stars (nujm).

    * Quran excludes Sun and Moon clearly from planets. They belong to a higher and lower order respectively. Such clear demarcation was achieved only by modern astronomy which is but a few centuries old.

    * The number of planets are given as 11. We mumins have absolutely no doubt that it is a matter of time that modern astronomy will reach this count. Science is now in the process of gathering evidence for what it has already made indications.

Incidentally, when in 1988 news of NASAs findings broke out concerning Rawals prediction of two extra planets this author published an article titled New Planet Discovered - As Prophesied by The Quran? In Islamic Voice (March, 1988) quoting this Quranic verse now under discussion. He sent a copy to the astronomer which reached him exactly on the day he returned from lecture tour from US. On the very same day he wrote back expressing his amazement at the Quranic prophecy and remarked that he would thenceforth quote the particular verse whenever he lectured on his discovery.

The author would also like to express his regrets that many translators of Quran in English as well as languages use the word stars in this verse instead of planets which Allah specifies. They are either unable to distinguish between these two different classes of heavenly bodies or are under the mistaken impression that planets are merely a subclass of stars or vice-versa.

    Pentium

It is called "Pentium" because it is the fifth in the 80x86 line. It would have been called the 80586 had a US court not ruled that you can't trademark a number.

The successors are the Pentium Pro and Pentium II.

The following Pentium variants all belong to "x86 Family 6", as reported by "Microsoft Windows" when identifying the CPU:

    Model Name
    1 Pentium Pro
    2 ?
    3 Pentium II
    4 ?
5, 6 Celeron or Pentium II
    7 Pentium III
8 Celeron uPGA2 or Mobile Pentium III

The name was chosen because of difficulties Intel had in trademarking a number. It suggests the number five (implying 586) while (according to Intel) conveying a meaning of strength "like
    titanium".

Intel did not stick to this convention when naming its P6 processor the Pentium Pro; many believe this is due to difficulties in selling a chip with "sex" in its name. Successor chips have been
called `Pentium II' and `Pentium III'.

Sorry, the above comments I pirate it off - http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=pentium

The last paragraph is more closely related to NetBSD (or all BSDs in general) problem. I read an article somewhere years ago that, Intel actually engaged a consulting firm in order to come out with a name for suitable for the 586. One of the criterias was that it must be something not offensive in any languages spoken worldwide.

Call it political correctness, but you don't offend anyone if you can help it. Especially a wold class entity doing business worldwide.

NetBSD, is an entity that transact with people all over the world. People from all walks of life. Personally, I love the BSD daemon, kinda cute.. But I'm sure it is not the OS of choice for some/most religious organization.. Esp. those conservative ones who have yet to discover fire.
