    Just in case one has been living under a rock for the past few years, CSS, the DVD encrypting scheme has been broken a long time ago.

    On a general-purpose PC, including Macs, BeBox and whatnot, DVD region coding can be bypassed any old way, for example using VLC. RPC1 or 2 don't serve any purpose anymore.

    They'll just re-image the machine and be done with it.

    To really have fun, make sure you don't destroy windows completely, but just make it behave in an interesting way. For instance by setting www.bluescreen.org.lu as Internet Exploder's homepage.

    The PC will boot just fine, and look ok on cursory examination (which helps to make sure that will stay in this state for a while ;-) ). However, as soon as you attempt to go on the internet, interesting stuff will happen...

    It would simulate, from time to time, like 15 times a day between 9am and 5pm, a BSOD by just popping up a blue screen and catch keypress and do nothing. This was easy, we downloaded the BSOD screensaver and used the pic.

    Or, even easyer: just have his IE connect to http://www.bluescreen.org.lu. Works best with '95 or '98.

    It's even worth if this happens to you at a public Internet Kiosk. Where you really don't want the next user to surf over to your private e-mail. And you have no way of flushing neither the password, nor the URL history (still containing the URL of your webmail). Last this happened to me was at a bank in Switzerland. They happened to have one of those Internet kiosks in their ATM area. After checking my mail, I noticed that there was no way of quitting the browser (which was running in full screen mode, with the window-close button nicely hidden). Even visiting Bluescreen.org.lu didn't help, nor any of the other "crash your windows" sites. Eventually, the only thing left was pulling the power cord (fortunately, this kiosk wasn't built into the wall).

There are other countries besides the US and Zimbabwe: Austria, the Christmas Islands, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israrel, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Nieu, Norway, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Tonga, The United Kingdom, just to name a few

    you can't deny that the US is a significant portion of the west.

    However, lately, Europe has rediscovered its self esteem, and doesn't hesitate to occasionnally give the finger to the US (see recent Echelon investigation, and some recent crypto decisions).

    The philosophy aside, the law does greatly impact things and should not be treated so lightly; we should be working within the system rather than ignoring it.

    It's hard to take US law seriously when the judges themselves don't treat it with due respect.

    On a normal day, I get a a couple of hundred hits on my DeCSS site. However, whenever some DeCSS site gets shut down somewhere, or when somebody gets arrested, or when the MPAA wins another injunction, then this number immediately jumps to a couple of thousands hits per day, until it levels off again after a week or so. Really, if the MPAA hadn't bothered, the whole thing would have been long forgotten by now, and everybody would think that CSS just meant "Customer service site" or other such nonsense...

    That's always good advice. And IANALBIWPMO. (I Am Not A Lawyer But I Watched Perry Mason Once.)

    The difficulty is knowing exactly what the law is. I'm pretty certain that the wholesale posting is a copyright infringement. I'm not sure about something like this link, although clicking it will cause a copyright infringement. I'd say there's a fairly strong but still debatable case there. I state for the record that I'm operating under the assumption that it isn't an infringement to do this. The case is even weaker if I comment that the URL is http://free-dvd.org.lu/kerberos.pdf without the tag making it clickable. Again, I operate under the assumption that citing an URL is not an infringement.

    If I comment that one can "circumvent" the EULA by opening it with winzip, I think the case for that being copyright infringement is pitiful, and on the verge of frivolous.

    If I quote the specification as saying "If you have not downloaded the Specification from Microsoft's website and agreed to the terms and conditions of the Agreement, you are not an authorized licensee of the Specification" and then go on to state that this is some pretty silly shit, and the sort of nonsense that gets Microsoft a reputation as a bunch of morons, that is within Fair Use.

    My personal advice to slashdot would be to remove the direct copyright infringements, such as this. The links are up to their legal counsel. As for "circumvention" instructions like commenting that you can open the damn thing with winzip, I'd say they can go blow.

    Alternately, one could test the counternotification provisions of the DMCA by yanking everything they ask for, then waiting for counternotifications. I'm not sure how well this would work, as most people seem to be more interested in whining about the law than using it.

    Recall that before the notification/counternotification provisions of the DMCA, a copyright complaint would result in material being yanked without any provisions for getting it replaced, no matter how bogus the complaint. The DMCA at least allows the ISP to be taken off the hook in the case of copyright infringement, so long as they follow the DMCA provisions relating to notification. Further, once the counternotification card has been played, the complaining party has nothing to do but put up or shut up.

    There are a lot of questionable provisions in the DMCA, especially the parts about circumventing "devices," which are pretty vague about what these are, but the liability limitation parts of it are good, or at least better than what we had before.

    While telling people where to find copies of a document is, arguably, a free speech issue, posting verbatim copies of a copyrighted work clearly isn't.

    I don't know... I saw the posting of the full text as a form of protest against Microsoft's proprietary extensions to Kerberos, which is supposed to be an open standard. If you look at it from that point of view, couldn't it be argued that it was a form of free speech?

    And another thing... comment #86 by smartin, which is listed above as having a copy of the full text, has nothing of the sort. I think they meant to put comment #87 by an AC, which does. The two comments made by BlueUnderwear also don't contain the full text, as stated in the letter. The merely contain this link.

    We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

    We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

    Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

    Explanation on legality of this information

    The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

    Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

    NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

    We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

    We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

    Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

    Explanation on legality of this information

    The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

    Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

    NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.
