Re:27" Korean's
I recently bought this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-003-DG No idea if it's Korean or not but it's awesome, no dead pixels, HD input. No USB though and the speakers are pants but hey.

Re:Data protection
What just like the valid uk computer hardware store http://www.overclockers.co.uk/ vs the gay porn site. http://www.overcockers.co.uk/ Or at least it used to be years ago when i made an accidental typo infront of my boss at the time
:/ At least he did see the honest mistake and saw the funny side of itHeh. I think the site in question was adslguide.org.uk or something. The porn site was the same but with co.uk or
.com or something more usual. This was about ten years ago, the site seems to have adslguide.com now, no idea if the porn site is still around. -

Re:Am I a cheap bastard?
Think yourselves lucky it's equivalent to $1800 here in the UK.

Re:Someone please tell me
A: Nothing. Save money and get a B type later, these cards are not good value. Alternatively, try the used market for a cheap Geforce 8800GT or Radeon HD4850, which will serve you pretty well.
B: Radeon HD4870. Great card, extremely good value.
C: Radeon HD5850 kicks ass. Diminishing value for money here though. -

Re:Might not be their intention
You seem to live in a different part of the world from most of the rest of us. Or even on a different planet. Did you miss all that about MS charging PC makers full retail price for Windows unless the maker installed Windows on every PC they made?
No. But I don't see why that would support the idea that a vendor who only ships PCs with Windows on would be expected to refund the full value of a retail box - we know they're paying below the market rate. In any case, I can fully understand dislike of MS bribing box makers to stick Windows on every box they produce, but I really don't see how this translates to me (or anyone else) being forced to buy a PC with Windows installed on it.
It would be helpful if you could give us some pointers to where bare PCs with mainstream hardware could be bought in the UK.
In the UK, overclockers do some, but don't seem to have a search-by-lack-of-OS option, Ebuyer do, er, two. There're places like http://debianshop.com/ who do ship an OS but it's a free one. And there are some real-life shops who will do it, too (well, they sell hardware and charge on top for the OS, but if you don't want the OS they don't sell you it).
I've not checked the hardware specs, but it's hardly likely to be any more peculiar than Dell's.The only way I know to get a bare PC is to build it yourself, and that's what I do. MS would like to take a tribute even from the likes of me though - on the assumption that I pirate their crap.
Sure, they'd probably
/like/ it, but they've not done anything to me personally to infer that I owe them any money for not having bought any of their software. -
Re:Track record
Interesting idea... but as much as I might not mind a netbook cpu in a netbook... having one in a dedicated server - not so much.
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18034050
I'll take the spike on usage when its in use quite happily
:) and 13w on idle is fine thanks for something that will be idle for a lot of the time.I have a blu-ray writer in this rig (currently typing this, same box in windows 7
:P ) and I've never used it to read a blu-ray disk nevermind write one since I bought it (and replaced it under warranty) within the 6 months or so I've had it. Wouldnt mind one in the mini.. maybe that's what I should wait for?I have to admit... I cant say any part of that system actually grabs me
:-| Come on! you should know just as well as me how much megahertz doesn't matter :P :)I do however agree on the upgrades... upgrading my cube was always part of the fun. Fun that apple has taken away by soldering everything to the board
:-|I dont need a new monitor since most of my use would be via vnc. Internal wifi N, internal bluetooth and the OS is thrown in for 'free' (yes you forgot the windows tax) I'm guessing you pirate yours. Although on that halo'd note, I'm likely to install os x server on it anyway \o/ (and yes I'll get that through alternative means too)
Slightly faster processor ?!?!?!
... I suggest you read up on your architecture, both cpu and gpu. I think if I was going to go down your route for a non apple machine I'd just screw the wattage and space constraints and go for a shuttle pc or something like that... although if I did that I wouldnt be able to harness the gpu for other uses so easily as I would with a mac mini. I bought my cube on ebay as a curious apple poker ( I used to despise apple btw) for less than qtr the price it retailed for 4 years before.450mhz 1mb cache PPC cpu able to out perform a 800mhz PIII w/ 128/256kb of cpu cache. As much as I love how well my cube has handled over the years... I get the impression the cost/ architecture of the mini wont match up in comparison for another 10 years. But the cube was sold as a premium space saving server. If they brought the cube back with todays expandability performance etc.. I doubt I'd drop the $2.5-3k they would want for it.
http://sys.eu.shuttle.com/home.jsf
On the cache note I see it appears to be a sore topic for the Atom line..
http://ark.intel.com/ProductCollection.aspx?familyID=29035 If I want a minimum of 1mb I'm restricted to 1.5ghz with just less than half the bus speed of the core 2 duo. I'd be curious to see what that actually means in direct comparison though, I wouldn't like to be comparing apples to oranges.3mb cache, faster memory and 1066mhz bus speed on the mini no mention it would appear of sata speeds on that asrock review either...
*shrugs* the mini so far still seems to fit with what I'm looking for as a comprimise of power over space / resource economy. Thanks for showing me the asrock system tho
:) Last I heard of the Asus budget line they only did motherboards.Sooooo - with that thought in mind, I'll wait until the next refresh where it would appear I'd get the return of 4mb cache, 1066mhz+ bus speed, blu-ray? and whatever else apple decides to throw in. I wouldnt be surprised if apple merged the appleTV with the mini and beefed the full thing up a bit as a media centric server.... we'll see I guess. I'm disappointed in the rpm speed of the hdisk in the mac mini but both the slot loading drive and hdisk can be replaced for something faster further down the line.
I think you picked on the wrong 'fanboy' here. I have as many reasons to hate Apple as I do Microsoft or I
-
Re:Are you crazy if you rush out and install it?
Speaking for myself, I've kept with XP, and even 2000 on my desktop, because they already do everything I need. They Just Work.
WinXP is only shipped with Netbooks as of 2008
Really? Not in my country. (And note, this was just the first PC seller I thought of off the top of my head.)

The future is Blu
did anyone else think it ironic that while your reading the above
"The future is Blu" flash advertisement pops up just beneath
I think the "Blu" way is definitely dominating over here in the UK
one look in hmv or the virgin stores in Manchester and there are more blu than brown cases on the shelves by a long way (over here some HD DVD cases appear to be brown instead of red for some reason)
not to mention the can of worms they opened up with Transformers
Looking at some current PC internal drives at the moment quite a lot appear to be dual format for reading
but most are writable only for BD

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=558&subid=1023 - BDR media sold out
I've yet to see a HD DVD writer (reader yes, writer no)
in short it's pretty much a no brainer at the moment
personally I'm waiting for the drives to mature a bit more first before getting one
I remember going through the whole "dual layer" writing thing with DVD's in just the same way
(Pioneer will probably have it all sorted sometime around April I'd guess) -

For instance The Asus Maximus Extreme, or Abit carries one too.

Stardock £25

Priceless
In all seriousness why bother? The feature's discussed are all availiable in Home Basic and even if you compare this 'pimping' to the Home Premimum edition you can still get Vista cheaper (£70 at This site ) The only reason not to upgrade to Vista and doing this would be hardware incompatibility or your machine isn't capable of running it well (say you've only got 512mb of ram.) -

You may want to get on that. I recently bought the fastest available AMD chip on the market (Athlon X2 6000+, 2x 3.0GHz cores) for about £170 (~$340) delivered. What's more, I could have had a Core 2 Duo E6600 for less, and an E6700 for little more, but decided that I'd show my support for AMD and vote with my wallet. It's so important that the competition stays on for Intel.
Now is a great time to upgrade your CPU. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/ is my preferred retailer, FYI. -
why not a cube?

d id=MP-002-MB tiny small form factor (smaller than the nano, although it is a cube) has FM Radio and can be used as a USB memory stick, OLED display there's even a 2nd generation device coming out that can play videos as well (although why would anyone want to) -

Re:What do people do in the UK?What do you mean by "DIY Freeview" ?
If you want freeview going through a pc (the DIY part) then get a freeview pci card or usb box and plug it in. You can use Myth on Linux, or various solutions on Windows XP such MS Media centre, Media Portal, (I was going to add Meedio, but it seems they've been bought out by Yahoo), Snapstreams "Beyond TV".
If you're on linux, then you could use the Hardware compatibility list at LinuxQuestions to help in choosing a card.
There is a nice selection of DVB-T cards available at DVBSHOP in Germany, which I have used, and they are pretty good with quick orders. They also sell Common Interfaces for some of the DVB-T cards so you can add a TopUp TV CAM and smart card and get subscriber stuff.
Ok, so you have to build the box yourself, but that's DIY for ya !

A useful site for UK users (and others as well)
OC Host Review
This site was created to provide an impartial, unbiased system for users of OcUK Forumsto share experiences with different webhosts (both positive and negative) and for people who perhaps have never bought webhosting before to have a reliable source of information. -
Re:In the UK
Be aware that, while Ebuyer is a great place to shop in terms of the huge range (and the bargains to be had in their "own brand" range) their website will often be out of date or inaccurate when it comes to product versions and descriptions. Your best bet is to put the manufacturers code listed on the site into google and check it tallies with what you're expecting, also check out the reviews. This is especially important when you're trying to buy things with a chipset that linux supports.
Other good UK sites include...
http://www.komplett.co.uk/ although I was sad when they stopped sending out the truely bizare e-mail newsletters, possibly the first online vendor to try to sell an 8 mega pixel camera by saying you could photograph nude beaches from a distance. Some of their stuff has shipped from mainland europe in the past when I've ordered (which takes time) and, as they use DHL it has the value written on the package which can be bad when you're wanting to hide just how much you've spent.
http://www.cclonline.com/ CCL who I can't say much special about but who've just delivered on time in the past
and...
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/ Overclockers who, despite being a... specialised store are one of the best in my experience for actually having stock and shipping it on time. However they can't compete with price with almost any of the "proper" stores. -
Re:In the UK...
Dabs are a pain somewhat - they often list items as in stock that they can't get hold of (like the CDRW drive they sold - showing 345 in stock but didn't have any, and refused to refund the delivery). I've cancelled my delivery with them.
Dabs suck!
Ebuyer.com are ok imho, as are http://www.overclockers.co.uk/ and http://www.scan.co.uk./
Make sure you check for voucher/promotional codes. http://www.hotukdeals.com/, http://www.currentcodes.com/ and http://www.flamingoworld.com/ all seem good.

PHP + MySQL + n00bs = security nightmare
If you start teaching them how to write PHP code then teach them how to write secure code from day one! Warn them of the dangers of Cross Site Scripting (XSS) and MySQL injection etc. See here for more security related issues.

Re:On a related question: which video card?
You can passive cool up to a 5700 (some here) using one of these.
So, a silent card with 256MB that should pretty happily play HL2. Most of the models have dual-head, some have video in/out too. -
Re:Last time I checked...
1GB is still bigger than 250mb.
Bah!!! 250 GB is bigger than 1GB.
Go! Maxtor MaXLine Plus II 250GB SATA 8MB Cache - (HD-021-MD) .........

the 9800 is cheap as chips too
bought mine two months ago for £120 from here much better than the close to £300 when it came out...

Floppies Burn Nicely
Floppies burn remarkably well... Just be careful of the carpet for the dripping. CDs on the other hand don't burn easily. I've only tried twice and only ended up dripping melted, bubbling plastic onto my hand.
Not much else computer-wise burns. Cable insulation will if you try hard enough, but is rather miserable. Anything metal, needless to say, forget it, and PCBs seem to be made to be flame-retardant (here's a rather shocking example of why).
Needless to say, friends are learning to keep me away from lighters (especially two at once; Setting light to the handle of one lighter with another is very fun... Until it burns through the plastic and reaches the fluid! Big Mistake!)

One of the biggest, earliest overclocking retailers in the UK (with the best forums may I add...) had their entire site design stolen by a korean overclocking company I believe, aaaages ago. And I'm sure they weren't the first...
