it's rather telling that...
It' rather telling that you find --> this <-- funny.
You seem so eager to kill people. Are you certain there is not something terribly wrong with you? -
This works for me
A lot of people has been in the same situation before you, and as a result they came up with a very effective yet lowtech method you seem to have missed. Please check out this page for an introduction to the concept by Rolando Merino.

Re:You don't know the half of it....1) The Soviet Union did all the heavy lifting when it came to defeating the Nazis in WW2. That's not to say that the Western allies didn't contribute AT ALL, but the Soviets bore the brunt of it and did the lions share of destroying the German army.
True, the Soviets paid a high price in casualties to beat back the Nazis. However, a big reason for the high number of Soviet casualties was Hitler's invasion of the USSR (which Stalin, at least, wasn't expecting quite so soon) in violation of the 1939 Molotov/von Ribbentrop nonagression pact, at a time when the USSR wasn't fully prepared for war, partially because Stalin had just brutally purged the USSR in general and the Red Army in particular of those he feared were disloyal. One of the primary Soviet motivations for signing the pact with the Nazis, instead of joining an alliance against them with France and Britain, was the USSR's general unreadiness for war and Stalin's belief that he could build up his army while Hitler was busy in the west.
Thus, in the attempt to buy some time at the expense of France and Britain (and Poland, which Hitler and Stalin agreed to divide between themselves) to rebuild the army that he was responsible for decimating in the first place, Stalin made the mistake of trusting Hitler and got burned. So if you're trying to drum up some sympathy for the Soviets, you'll get precious little from me =)
Also, a slight nitpick: the phrase "the lion's share" means all of something, not just the majority of it. The reference is to one of Aesop's fables.

Re:Oxymoron? If the radiator mount is strong, how can it be brittle at the same time?
OK, read this. The Oak and the Reed
Same thing applies in other areas, e.g. tall buildings sway slightly in strong winds or mild earthquakes.

Re:Definitely MapQuest
El Camino Real is "The King's Road". There are actually two El Camino Real's - one in California and one in Texas. They are esentially the first interstate roadways in the New World. In both cases, they were built to link a series Spannish missions.
Well, depending on your definition of "first interstate highway" you would have to give that title to either the Boston Post Road or one of three roads built in the 1950's. The problem is that interstate roads didn't truly exist in a legal sense until the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956.
However, the Boston Post Road is widely recognized as the first major road in the United States, it has existed in one form or another since at least 1673. The El Camino Real, in comparison, has been around since about 1769. -
Re:Definitely MapQuest
There's an El Camino Real Blvd in Clear Lake, Texas (just south of Houston) near JSC. I thought it was one of these local things, but if there's one in Silicon Valley I must be wrong.
Heh. It caught my attention when I moved from the Clear Lake area to the Bay Area. Bugged me, too.
El Camino Real is "The King's Road". There are actually two El Camino Real's - one in California and one in Texas. They are esentially the first interstate roadways in the New World. In both cases, they were built to link a series Spannish missions.
Following El Camino Real in California is a bit twisty, but one can piece it togeather. Texas' El Camino Real appears to be a bit simpler.
I would guess Clear Lake's road is simply a nod to this historic highway (located much further to the north). -
El Camino Real
...in Spanish, means "The Royal Road", or "The King's Road". In California, at least, it was a highway that linked the Spanish Catholic missions up and down the coast. The original highway is no longer in use, of course, but California has marked various roads and highways as "El Camino Real". For more history and maps, see this site.
There are two other major El Camino Reals - El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, which may be the one you've seen in Texas (it originally ran from Mexico City to Santa Fe) and El Camino Real de los Tejas, which ran from Mexico City to what is now Louisiana.
-
Re:Definitely MapQuest
I can't speak for Texas, but El Camino Real was the road in California that Spanish missionaries used to settle the state as they were building missions.

Abandoned road plans.
Here's a couple of links to cool historic planning maps for San Francisco and Los Angeles. The will to do these things didn't last long enough to finish though.
Another interesting "roads of future past" link is interregional highways, which shows what the interstate system was meant to look like in 1944, before it was called the interstate system.

Re:How much more black could it be?How much more black could it be?
:-)
I think the term originally comes from Television, where you can get Blacker than Black, as the actual signal level for black is higer than the absolute lowest value. Ever done the calibration where you have to lower/raise the brighness so that a black areas is the same colour as the background? There is a test image and a description of the process here.
Highly recommended if you like things to be "just right"
;-) Most folk have their TV set very wrongly and don't realise it, usually because they have the settings up in the shop to make it stand out from the other ones.If you are interested in this sort of thing, and have a home cinema set up, I highly recommend the Video Essentials DVD, which explains everything about setting your system up to be perfect. No, I don't work for them!
-
Now this is *really* cool.
Perhaps in the future, those who are spearheading this project can do a map tracing of El Camino Real de California, or whatever it's formally known as (more coloquially known as El Camino Bignum). I'd love to see where that runs in conjunction with current roads, but that's just me.

Re:Tax all ya want...Americans hate taxes of all shapes and sizes, except in california. I live in california can someone please explain to me that if my ridiculous state taxes offer so much in benefit to the citizens that live here where are they? I drive the 880 to work every night and it has to be one of the most convoluted stretch of highways I have ever seen. Cloverleafs, not a single mile sign in the state mind you (there are no exit numbers did you mean el camino real or el camino way ? ? ?), and they have construction crews with 4000 flashing yellow lights and 10,000 watt mercury flood lights pointed towards oncoming traffic every day after 11:00 pm. It is illegal for me to have my brights on for incoming traffic but having something 10's of not 100's of times more powerful is fine, come on.
San fransisco has willie brown easily one of the most corrupt politicians in the entire west coast. We have davis sucking dick for anyone who might help him get to the presidency (that includes ellison). Speaking of which just living in the same state as ellison, siebel (tom), and the like makes my skin crawl. California easily has one of the most overtaxed populace in the united states without any real state-sponsored socialist programs here that are worth mentioning, where does the money go?

Re:Guns don't kill people...
explosives, or other relatively sophisticated weaponry.
what is so sophisticated about diesel fuel and fertilizer? really there are alot of explosives that are cheap and easy to make. a simple google search will provied instructions on how to construct such devices. you can even purchase the books online if you cannot make it down the library.
really though if someone wants you dead there isnt much you can do to stop them especially if you are not aware of their desire. banning guns treats the symptom and not the problem. the only solution that involves banning stuff is to ban everything. the only way to stop people from violating the rights of others is to strap everyone to a bed at birth and not allow them to come into contact with others.
