Re:I like Panetta
I like Panetta and think that his chain of restaurants/bakeries makes some of the finest bread that I've tasted.
Pancetta is delicious.

Re:Simple Solution
Look at the nutrition facts:
http://www.panerabread.com/pdf/nutr-guide.pdf
http://nutrition.mcdonalds.com/nutritionexchange/nutrition_facts.htmlAverage half sandwich is around 500 calories, 10 grams of fat, and 5 grams of saturated fat.
Big Mac has 540 calories, 29 grams of fat, 10 grams of saturated fat.The panera sandwich is only a half, which won't fill up most males as a lunch or dinner, so if you want the full sandwich double that.
Panera is delicious, but don't think that its anywhere near good for you.

Re:Simple Solution
Go to Panera Bread. They have free wi-fi there, too. The food is quite a bit better, and healthier, than all that fried and preprocessed crap that McDonald's dishes out,...
And they don't seem to mind if I sit there for 30 minutes......

Re:Simple Solution
Healthier than McDonald, Yes. However check yourself if it is really healthy for you: http://www.panerabread.com/pdf/nutr-guide.pdf

Re:Simple Solution
Man, you weren't kidding. Compare Panera Bread sandwiches (page 4 of the PDF), with McDonald's sandwiches (select sandwiches from the drop down). The highest calorie sandwich from McDonald's is 740 calories. The highest calorie Panera Bread sandwich is the Full Chipotle Chicken on Artisan French at 1070 calories. Panera Bread has no fewer than 16 sandwiches that exceed the calories of the Double Quarter Pounder.
I thought McDonald's food was unhealthy, but damn Panera Bread's stuff is even worse! Panera Bread's stuff is also loaded with sodium, even more so in many cases than the notoriously sodium-heavy McDonald's fare. In fact, their highest sodium sandwich has more than twice the sodium as McDonald's highest sodium sandwich! Trying to pass off Panera Bread as a "healthier alternative" seems like a pretty irresponsible thing to do.

Re:Like freedom of speech?
You should also note that other frequencies (5.8 GHz, 2.4GHz, etc.) are free for all, so long as the power does not exceed a certain amount.
I sure am aware of the 5.8 GHz, 2.4GHz, bands. The is the power rating is so low its not useful as a roof top network node.
What the FCC needs to give the people that pay there salary is the same power ratings that we hold to the side of our heads all the time. That would be Cell phones.
We also need fare sharing protocols that are easy enough to figure out. This would give local ISP's a foot hold that would allow for fare competition with out the need for all the wires that limit competition.
I appreciate your correction. I am not a radio guy but rather a computer scientist.
But my point is this, the Internet is the town square of the 21 century. The founding fathers would be appalled that we are taxed by monopolies to assess that town square.
Perhaps short of Dish TV quantity's of data, there is Adequate bandwidth for roof top Internet access and traffic routing. I know this based on a 1994 petition that Apple computer Inc. sent to the FCC, but was rejected.
This sort of thing was apposed by the AT&T Lobby, since it would make local make local phone service obsolete. It also would have replaced the cash cow of the Cell networks with a free home grown network.
Here is a good reference about how little head way amateur radio community has so far exibited.
As for me I through out the idea of being taxed to use the cell phone nets long before there existence was popular. And the local Broadband providers can't seem to reach my house not so rural house. So I seek out the local bread shop where WiFi is provided.
The rub is the local House of Delegates would criminalize purposely surfing the Internet on someone else's wireless connection. And this would be just one more way for the for the Government to take away our freedom of speech!
PS. I appreciate the support of the original poster as well. -
Panera Has Had Free WiFi For Years
Panera Bread has had free wifi for years. You can use this page to find one near you. They typically don't hassle you even if you are camped out and not buying much.

What about upstream modification
It seems that everyone is concerned about downstream modification, and is completely ignoring the possibility of upstream modification. What if Sprint started modifying upstream http-posts to start a more viral ad distribution system? Not only would they be able to target their customers, they would also be able to target the customers of anyone who could read the post!
This is the reason that we need to push for network neutrality. When the only choices are between a giant douche which alters content and a turd sandwich which alters content, the customer ends up screwed in the end. -
Panera Bread Does
Panera Bread offers free WiFi.
http://www.panerabread.com/locations.aspx?WiFi=1
They seem to be doing fine. The big companies like the RIAA and MPAA like to go after the little guy who cannot defend himself in court because of the costs. If they ever challenged a company that can defend itself they might lose. -
Re:I live in Orlando...
hmm. i live in orlando, too; and have known about the free wifi since it's inception. but i live downtown, so maybe that's why. as far as the service goes, i could access from lake eola; but, the rest of downtown wasn't very accessible. in the end, i preferred to either use other open networks (like your neighbor) or i just used panera bread's free wifi (everyone knows that all panera's have free wifi, yes?) http://www.panerabread.com/wifi.aspx

Re:Kansas
I was simply going off there hot spot list. There's a Panera here in Wichita IIRC. I don't believe it has 'net access though. Their site says none of the KS ones do at least.

Re:Starbucks of bread?
At the Westport Plaza St. Louis Bread Co. the staff have always been very helpful, smart, and quick to bring me my order.
Interestingly, there is a Starbucks right next door, which offers Starbucks coffee, and T-Moblie wireless. I constantly see people at the Bread Co. (Panera) with laptops and rarely see them at the Starbucks.
Of course, I'm usually getting food at the St. Louis Bread Co., during lunchtime, so that probably leads to some skewing of my data-gathering obervations.
My favorite sandwich is the Bacon Turkey Bravo. Yummy!

Restaurant Plug
Panera Bread Company in Fort Worth, TX on University Drive. Good food (sandwiches, soup, etc), free wireless, and signs indicating the booths that have power available for laptops. All this, and cute college chicks from nearby TCU...
