Annoyed but not defeatedI too have noticed many pop-up blockers defeating Firefox on Windows XP and Linux. On Windows it was not difficult to solve. Two options which both work perfectly. My first option was to turn my free pop up stopper back on which did the trick. Sadly this option will only be usable on Windows.
My second option which works on both OS's, I grabbed the Firefox Plugin called adblock. This eliminates banners and such, but not the actual pop-up window. What you can do from there is right click on the annoying pop up, choose "Adblock Image" copy the main url (eg. http://images.slashdot.org/) and in the web features section (under options in Firefox) ad the url to the block list. It's done wonders for me.

Re:Innovation
Slim browser uses IE and has tabbed browsing
Popup Stopper Kills off popups quite well.
I dont give a flying f*** about mouse gestures. If you're too lazy to use the buttons at the top, or keyboard shortcuts. Then lack of mouse gestures is the least of your problems -
Re:Mozilla is a great browserYes, pop-up blocking is great.
I often get customers coming up to me and asking what they can do to reduce or stop those annoying pop-up's. Sometimes I'll have to stop and think for a few seconds to understand/remember what they're talking about since Mozilla has spoiled me.
The first thing I always do is recommend that they download Mozilla and give that a try while explaining to them that I haven't seen a pop-up in over a year.
Unfortunately, though, most folks (~ 95%) will just tell me that they like/are happy with Internet Explorer, despite its bugs and holes. After another attempt at explaining to them the benefits of switching, I'll just tell them about products such as pop-up stopper and popup defender. It's sad, really, as they have no idea what they're missing out on.

Of course there's pop-up blocking..
'Parasite' is a shorthand term for "unsolicited commercial software" -- that is, a program that gets installed on your computer which you never asked for, and which does something you probably don't want it to, for someone else's profit. -
Re:Not over...
Or you could install A pop-up stopper for free and she can continue to use IE.
Does Firebird work well with Flash/Java and the other plug-ins we do desperately need? -
Re:This is wonderful
Why do people seem to assume that IE is incapable of blocking popups?
Ok, yeah, it can't do it by default. So what? There are innumerable popup blockers which vary from blocking all new windows unless you hold down some key (like Popup Stopper) to COM wrappers that do pretty much what Mozilla does (one of which is Crazy Browser) to proxy filters that filter out unwanted popups, ads, and more (such as Proxomitron. The last of which filters out far, far more than what Mozilla does, although it could be used with Mozilla as well if you wished.
Go ahead... whine about them being addons. The fact of the matter is that they're considerably smaller than Mozilla or even Firebird and they don't require the user to lose all their cookies or form data.
Honestly though, I switched from using IE+Proxomitron to Mozilla (at home) and Firebird (at work). And I do rather prefer it, since it gives me more flexibility on what I do and don't block (ok... Proxomitron is technically far, far more flexible... but that flexibility is painful to access - Mozilla/FB give me flexibility and ease of applying that flexibility). But that doesn't mean that they're not valid options to use. -
Re:I remember popups ...
And if you MUST use Internet Explorer, you can always try Panicware's POP-UP Stopper, free edition.
No complains here with my system, except it used to crash Kazaa sometimes when that bloody Bonzi Buddy tried to pop up. The solution: switch to kazaa lite. -
IE Users
A few good popup killers for IE (for those unfortunate enough to browse without Mozilla);
hdsoft PopNot - Shareware, personal favorite
Panicware Pop-up Stopper - free
EMS Project - free
Meaya Popup Filter - shareware -
Re:Ah, yes
Seems like it would be a lot easier just to use a popup stopper instead. This is what I did with IE until I installed mozilla.
Panicware has a good one that's freely downloadable. I still have it installed at home but just leave it disabled now (since Mozilla catches them all). -
The simple solution is
Don't use IE. Use Phoenix, Mozilla, Netscape or Opera. I haven't faced any such problems since I switched. The other way is to get free versions of pop-up blockers so that you don't click OK on everything that pops up. This is nothing new. I am sure this was a piggyback install on something else. You just need to read the fine print before agreeing.

It's a Video Game
I like to think of it like a really complicated video game.
1) Use Alt+Tab to switch to the offending window without actually bringing it up. Then, quickly let go and hit Alt+F4 to close the window.
2) Get Pop-Up Stopper. It's free & this article doesn't even mention whether pop-up blockers are effective against it, but I assume they are.
3) ????
4) Profit. -
Partial Solution
A few months ago, I downloaded a program called the Pop-Up Stopper. It's free, and takes up almost no space. It also stops all regular pop-up ads. I admit that it doesn't catch all of them (some of the ones with unusual scripts running can fool it), but I'd guess it stops 9 out of every 10 ads. If you actually want a window to pop-up, all you have to do is hold down the Control key while you click on the link. It's very little hassle, and stops a lot of ads. Give it a shot!

for Instant Messaging
It seems that specifically open source items were requested but since everyone is posting non-open source but free programs, I guess I will too.
Trillian has been great for me. They just introduced a pay version but a free version is still available. It is great.
Also Pop-Up Stopper FREE Edition is quite awesome for those who want to be communist and not support the Mozilla engine. -
Re:I've fallen in love with Opera, but...
Interestingly enough, this is almost exactly what Pop-Up Stopper does- small icon in the system tray that flashes when an ad is stopped. You can either right click on the icon and select "allow pop-ups" or just hold ctrl to disable it temporarily.
I've been using the free version with Netscape 7 and it seems to work perfectly. I should note that only the commercial versions include the option to allow popups from certain sites (but since you can disable it anyway, it's not that big a deal). If you're using Windows, give it a try.
Or just get Mozilla :) -
Re:Panicware Pop-Up Stopper
Panicware Pop-Up Stopper is one of the best browsing utilities ever. I've been using for the last 10 months or so. Can't browse without it. It will block most of the popups. you can download it and see for urself. Also try the companion version. It has a bunch of extra features in it.
Webmasters who want to have popups on their sites are getting the hang of getting around those popup stoppers utilities. i've noticed on some sites that they've started using Flash popups and Java popups. I don't know of any software that can do block those yet.
Try it: panicware.com -

Pop up stopper does it for me....
Pop Up stopper does the job of killing pop up ads while allowing me to surf sites that actually "need" to pop up a new window.

Panicware Pop-Up Stopper
I'm an IE6.0 windows user, and I stumbled across Pop-Up Stopper by panic ware. It just displays a little icon in the system tray, which can be turned on and off by double clicking. It has been almost foolproof so far, and it's completely free. They also have retail products that provide even more services (though I haven't tested any myself).

Ad blocking - panicware
Popup Stopper by Panicware works well for me. Of course I'm running Windows on a PC, so if you're not, it won't help much. However, I have yet to have it not block a popup. It doesn't block the javascript - it prevents another browser from opening.

Re:Pop-up ads don't bother me so much...
So does Pop-up Stopper if you prefer IE.
-
Re:Get Mozilla Now!
You know, there are ways of getting popups off in IE. Get Pop-up Stopper.
-
Even more creepy..
Is that programs like Pop-up Stopper Pro cannot stop these downloads because sites (like cracks.am) embed the EXE in OBJECT tags so no JavaScript calls are placed.

Re:why mozilla rules here
Any Windows based web browser can make use of the free utility Popup Stopper. It will stop any pop-ups as well, and allow you to disable/enable it by double clicking the toolbar icon, or hold down shift and click a link to temporarily allow popups.
That said, neither Mozilla or Popup Stopper or anything else are going to stop the slimy advertising being discussed. Because this isn't a pop-up, it's a download, and they're handled differently. -
Re:why mozilla rules here
Look if you don't want to view a site's ads, then don't go to the site. It is as simple as that. Blocking certain portions of a site's content because you don't personally want to see it is definitely immoral and arguably illegal
What a load of horse pucky.
I understand that websites have to generate revenue, and that the current method is moving more toward pop-up/under ads. That's fine. That doesn't mean I have to subject myself to it. As an informed consumer I have the right to ignore the ads in whatever way I deem fit, whether that means closing the windows as they come up or telling my computer to not allow them to render in the first place.
Should a browser default to stopping pop-ups? Hell no. It breaks too many sites that use pop-ups for additional help/information windows, sites that load links in a new window, etc. But I should certainly have the option to kill pop-ups if I want to enable it (and preferably with a quick key to reenable them - like Popup Stopper has).
Want to argue otherwise? Go for it. You also watch every commercial on TV, right? No getting up to go to the bathroom/kitchen. No recording it to VCR or PVR and fast forwarding/skipping through the commercials. Because if you are then, by your own definition, you are immoral. Maybe even commiting a crime!
Oh, and do you read every ad in a magazine? Do you throw out those blown-in/tear-out cards in magazines before someone else can read them? Do you read every billboard that passes by while in a car? EVERY TIME?
I don't think so.
And yes, I know this was a troll. Congrats. But this kind of thinking might actually get some people that nod and drool "yes", and it's so abundantly stupid it needs to be shut down before hand. -
Re:Ubiquitous?Duuuude! Quit that - you know that the Slashdolts need all the help they can get to maintain any reason at all to trumpet open source. If there were equivelent or better options for every open source application, OSS would wind up as a miserable failure among everyone except the malcontents. Oh, wait...
PS: The free version of Pop-up Stopper works well on IE and Netscape, too. Shhhh.

Third Party PatchingObviously this is what we have to look forward to in the future.
If Microsoft doesn't patch their bugs for us, or remove/make optional features/bugs of their operating system for us, we'll write programs that do.
Hell, I don't start IE6 without a copy of Pop Up Stopper by Panicware, since I can't turn off pop up windows like I can in Mozilla. And the really bright ones among us don't use anything but litestep
:)So who wants to start a betting pool on how long it'll take Microsoft to start lawsuits against programs like these?

Certify Software, not Software Engineers
A certified engineer can still make a mistake.
Certified software is tested and putatively immutable, and you can always throw more testing at it if you think it needs it.
DO-178B procedures require that all software designs and implementations be reviewed and tested, the tests reviewed, and the reviews reviewed, by different engineers--or companies--wherever practicable. And it comes with different levels of certification, to allow cost reduction where lower levels of risk are involved.

(Note to web surfers, if you want to go to yahoo.com, say, to find standards links, do not mis-type the domain as "yaho.com". Trust me on this. I also advise everyone to use Panicware's free Pop-up Stopper. This node is getting wrapped right now.) -
In the meantime, there's pop-up preventer software
For those who still endure the drudgery of Winblows at work or home, go to www.panicware.com and get the Pop-Up Stopper. Works great, non-intrusive, can be disabled with a quick double-click on the tray icon.

Re:Getting rid of banner ads...
This is basicly what the Spyblocker program does . It installed a 377kb hosts file of ad-crap in my windows directory. Gets rid of most annoying banners
:). I also sometimes use pop-up stopper if I am visiting particularly intrusive sites. -
For Windows and IE users:
http://www.panicware.com/products.html
Popup Stopper sits in your system tray and block all popups. You can turn it on and off by doubleclicking on it. If you want to leave it on, but allow a certain popup, just hold down one of your shift keys. It's takes a tiny bit of getting used to remembering to use the shift key, but after a day or 2, it will be second nature. Popup Stopper will blink in the tray and play a sound, if you want, to notify you when it blocks a popup. This software is free. -
pop-up stopperpanicware.com has a free program for windows users called 'pop-up stopper'.
http://www.panicware.com/downloads/PopUpStopper22. exe
if you want to allow a pop-up, you hold ctrl while clicking the link. I've been using this for about a month and it works really well.
