better example: DVD
you'd think that DVDs have destroyed the movie industry, but they certainly haven't. DVD media sales have surpassed VHS, DVD hardware sales have surpassed VHS hardware. DVD burners are shipping with many new laptops, desktops, etc and if you don't already have one, you can pick them up for under $100. DVD burning software is everywhere and it's easy.
Yet DVDs are selling like hotcakes. Movie theatres are suffering from the popularity of DVDs, however. Check out this article for more information. It notes that those that download movies from internet often see *more* movies in theatres even! -
Longer article here
I submitted this yesterday, and it was rejected. Oh well.
Full length article mirrored here.. the cbs.ca one cuts things a bit short. -
Slashdot in the Netscape 8 demo
Take a look at the Flash based demo. Look at the bookmarks in the bookmark bar.
Here's a screenshot of it. -
Off Topic: Google ads relevance?
Mods: I've already noted this is off topic. Modding it down would be silly. That being said, I thought that the Google text ads were supposed to be relevant. I've been seeing the same ads popping up a lot.. not just on slashdot.

More & more "Christian" services popping up. WTF? -
Screw the cafeterias. BBQ!
My old roommate works right down the street from me, so we meet up in the middle and BBQ during lunch time.
So what if it's just a dirt lot under a Hwy 237 overpass? It's a great way to kill the lunch hour (or hour and a half..) and we grill up steaks or burgers or chicken. -
Here's a post 9/11 tale for ya..
Friend of mine and I do Geocaching a lot. We had placed a cache in a field directly north of the Sacramento International Airport. This particular cache was not on the airport property at all.
Check out this image to see what I mean.
Some other Geocachers went to find it post 9/11 and found the Sacramento County Sheriff department all OVER them & the cache. Before 9/11, nobody thought about it, but post 9/11, the paranoia had kicked in.
We decided that it would be best to retire that particular cache. :| -
Copyright office wants to help abandonware
This is quite topical once again.
The text of the Copyright Office post is here - Why Slashdot keeps rejecting this, who knows.
Anyway, a lot of these MAME games are practically "orphan-ware" anyway, and they want to address the insane copyrights that tie these games up and out of the public domain.
Public comment period, folks... copyright changes *could* happen! -
In other HUGE copyright news...
(I submitted this yesterday, but it was rejected and instead dupes and other schlop were posted)
The Copyright Office is inviting comments on the current situation with copyrights and "orphaned works" (ie, abandonware, etc) - they have realized that copyrights are holding back innovation, especially when the copyright holders cannot be located.
I think that this is a really major thing. The article is mirrored in its entirety here -
Slashdot is dumb sometimes.
.. they put up dupe stories, but rejected one that was submitted about the US Copyright Office actually requesting comments from the public about what to do with stuff like abandonware. With all of the copyright talk that goes on around here, one would think that an article about possible HUGE copyright change would get posted. But no, the article about the history of the space suit and then this dupe beat it out.

Mirror in case anyone cares.
Earlier evilscheme.org wouldn't load. Now it comes up just fine. Go figure.
Here's a mirror in case it goes *splat* again.
Have fun! -
Another eBay SCUM: "badlookingboy"
This little prick ripped off a very close friend of mine and then either the idiot or his stupid girlfriend actually said I was harrassing them.
Then they left negative feedback - ah, but this little punk ass bitch forgot you can leave a URL as eBay feedback. Heh. own3d.
here is the story -

Save your school
here is another mirror, on what is probably a much much faster pipe.
:)
(could only squeeze 48K/sec off your school..) -
Mirror, and.. neat project!
Mirror here - and this is kind of a neat looking project. Do they have any plans to make any more? From the looks of it, they want to be able to take these things out in public to create a WiFi network.
Maybe they can hook up with the Huge Ass WiFi Backpack Guy from the other day? -
Yet Another Mirror
right here! - just in case the other 5 mirrors aren't good enough.
:)
This guy/girl did something quite entertaining, even though it probably violates countless fire codes.
I wonder if it's still up.. -
Just hit up IKEA
Get cabinets like mine - the easy part is getting the cabinets. The hard part is getting your significant other to agree to let them live in the living room.
:)
Do notice that I have a few shelves on the relay rack. The ServerIron (switch) is a bit heavy in the back, so I have a book shoved between it and the Sparc 5 directly below it. :P
The rack is also anchored to the wall. -
Whoops
-
Haven for crime, too.
Check this out. eBay has done nothing to this guy. He's been scamming people for months, all for small amounts, yet eBay doesn't do a damned thing because the amounts are all too small for them to worry about. I'm pissed off enough that I have an attorney friend looking into legal action against this little pissant.
Screw eBay. -
Hah. Your network is weak! :P

Re:Death of a spammer
I actually had a *Rackspace employee* spam me. Here is the story.
They eventually wrote back and said "Sorry." The entire event was rather entertaining, to say the least. heh. -
Uh, it's easy..
Check this out - that's just the stuff in the kitchen.
My power bill averages about $130-$180. It just depends on how stupid your local power company. -
link typo - but found something elseYou typed:"Go to espn [epsn.com] to see this thing in action."
I went to epsn.com - another "search engine" owned by domain squatters. They call themselves "megago" this time.
However, it dropped down a Mozilla warning field!! Your only options are "Cancel" or "OK." Obviously, "OK" is the default, so if you hit return, off you go to some other website. Now that is a bunch of crap.grr..Screenshot here

Use this script to find out...
I found this script on the SpamAssassin mailing list. It's been pretty interesting to use.
I ran the script a few minutes ago on a machine that I host for a friend (web counter service, her websites/etc - she's been on the net for many years with her own domain/etc)
Total Messages...: 14950
Clean Messages...: 6413
Spam Messages....: 8537
Spam Percentage..: 57 percent
57% of the email out of nearly 15,000 emails in /var/log/mail are fucking SPAM!!!
That is *ridiculous*
This is with SpamAssassin, Razor, Pyzor, and several RBL lists in /etc/postfix/main.cf all running.
The spam still gets through. It sucks up bandwidth. It sucks up resources. It's really offensive sometimes. Spammers know there's no federal legislation in place to block them, so they go on their spammy ways.
Spammers are scum. They *do not care* that you don't want their spam. -
Re:I don't know if this applies
You filled up a closet? My girlfriend filled them all with shoes. I put the computers in the living room instead.
:-)
It's a bit loud, but we got used to it.. -
Very true.
I've got 2 loaded racks downstairs. (Click here to see most of them) and my power bill is about $200/mo. I'm in Sacramento, so we're not getting screwed over by PG&E. I'm still getting screwed over, but it hurts a whole lot less than the PG&E type of screwing.
I've also stopped using major appliances and have started using the laundromat again, but hey, at least I have a ton of blinky lites downstairs. :D
