Re:Hmm...
Whatever. I've been using macs for over a decade now, and all us old mac users remember the little "Fuck You" messages from MS,
"Over a decade now" is only 1996, dude. You're closer to the time where Microsoft lent stock to Apple than the time that MS really had to worry about Macintosh competition.
System-wide bugs from installing an Office Suite, a web browser, or a media-application are properly MS's fault, but I suspect it's more due to the relative size and cojones of the Apple-development team at MS than any actual malevolence. Those applications @#$!'d up Windows 95-98 when you installed them as well, just not quite as much.
With regards to the DVD -- unless you can show a link to Microsoft actually providing some of the software for this one, you'll just have to chalk it up to a software/DVD bug. The only link I found claims that other DVDs had the same problem.
Oh, and all those sites that wouldn't support Netscape 3-4 were due to browser wars that had NOTHING to do with Apple at all. -
Re:I agree about the ...
You can do a search on this page that talks about W's use of a Mac - http://www.pbzone.com/archive/0800_16thru23.shtml
Now as far as the penguins are concerned, I can't confirm NOR deny that claim. -
Re:Get a GatewayI was going to buy a Thinkpad T42 but now I'll get an Apple Powerbook on it's next rev (January in all likelihood).
BTW Apple is #1 in Laptop customer satisfaction. I love Thinkpads (I have 2 right now) but I won't buy a Levono Thinkpad.
Powerbooks are fine kit and no mistake, but don't fool yourself that you're buying Apple hardware - they're all made by the same set of Taiwanese ODMs that make PC laptops - Compal and Quanta, for instance. My "Toshiba" laptop is actually designed and built by Compal, as are many Dell and Elonex models.

Re:I get 8 hours!
Well, there was also the matter of the Powerbooks catching on fire, which scared me off of them!

Re:For all those that keep asking.....
Beware keeping the screen closed and forcing the laptop to stay on! After a few hours, there will be damage.

Re:PC Power for Peripherals
But you can't power printers and laptops off of it for very obvious reasons: LOOK AT THE GAUGE OF CAT5. It's a low power solution only: phones, access points, etc.
Actually, if you look at the specs, you will notice that you could power a laptop using ethernet power. The average power requirements of a 887 Mhz Powerbook is 12 Watt while the maximum power provided by ethernet is 12.95 Watts, you would need the battery to buffer the average consumption and obviously some laptop consume way more, but for some, it could work... -
Re: iPods don't spontaneously combust?
> Now they're complaining that the battery doesn't last forever. I find it amazing
> that after Li-ION batteries have been out for years that people don't understand
> that these things don't last forever.Damn straight! These guys should count their blessings. The battery simply dies-- at least it doesn't catch on fire like the old Powerbook 5300!

Bad design hits wallet too...Yup, things go boom. Apple powerbook laptops suffered from this as did recent Dell laptops. But for Dell the problem grew and grew and grew.
But do you think they put millions into battery design? Maybe they should...
Interestingly the documents p.23 of 35 in pdf seem to show Dell shelling out a $30 coupon to each owner of the flaming laptop batteries and more to the flaming lawyers...Dell agrees to pay, subject to the Court's approval, and not to oppose any application for or award by the Court to Class Counsel of attorneys' fees, together with costs and expenses up to $1,750,000 (One Million Seven Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars) ("Attorneys' Fees and Expenses"). The Parties agree that no award greater than that amount shall be requested or made. This amount is in addition to and separate from all other consideration and remedies paid to and available to the Settlement Class.
Perhaps this explains Panasonic's reluctance to sell dangerous batteries to "just anyone"... :-) -
Re:Good luck...
Well, in that case I'd be surprised that they allow Li-Ion batteries around, given that they have a tendency to spontaneously explode.

Two points...First, This idea is not a new one...see this review or buy it here
Second, having purchased the above referenced handle, I can seriously advise AGAINST installing any such device that mounts and channels load through the screen hinges/hinge mounts of the PBG4. I was (fairly) lucky and only had the hinge cover plastic broken from the stress of lite usage over the period of six months. Those covers aren't cheap and are very important inasmuch as they cover the various cables that go to the TFT display. How expensive? Well, in a quick search, the best price I found was $40.00 used.
So, use any of these devices at your own risk. After having done so myself, I will never use one again.

Re:Monitor Spanning fine in OS XThe idea that apple deliberately disabled it seems paranoid...
...but it's unfortunately true. Both Rage 128 Mobility and Radeon Mobility have built-in support for dual display. And it really can be done.
Apple does this from time to time. For example, they underclocked the Mac IIse so that it wouldn't compete with the more expensive IIci.

reminds one of Apple
Puzzling how PC makers finally decide to copy Apple, and this is the feature they choose.
If I were in their position, I would have copied the Titanium G4 (affectionately termed the "TiBook", pun on the Ti (the chemical symbol for titanium) and iBook). Instead they copied an old model that burst into flames without warning, as suddenly as Anakin turns into Vader. But, I guess I should just be thankful they are following suit in other areas, as the specs on these laptops are pretty sweet: 512MB memory and DVD out of the box, and nice crisp displays. And those 1.7GHZ P4's are really hauling ass. No wonder they lit on fire!
Anyway, keep up the good work, Toshiba. -
Re:What the article fails to mention...
According to the last stockholder meeting this is what was said via the Powerbook Zone:
"When a question about open source came up and slid to the topic of the underage developer cut off from ADC support, Jobs said "sometmies the news stories don't contain the real truth" and "it wasn't about age, it was about following the rules" and "trust us on this one." He said a minor could contribute to Darwin, but a parent or guardian would have to sign the correct forms. "
So you can still contribute and be a member, but you need to have a parent or parental guardian sign a release. This is all standard CYA stuff that most companies do. -

Pictures from Seybold '99
I attended Seybold '99 today and the show was stolen by Apple's G4. I am not a Apple user but i must admit that the G4s and cinema displays look excellent and must be view in person. But for those who were not able to make it to the expo some pictures are hosted on a friends Apple news/rumors site. Get the pics here.
