Re:I read somewhere...
and Wozniak is who i respect more then jobs. jobs was little more then a egomaniac control freak.(see pirates of silicon valley). yes some apple products were successful under him but many people seem to forget stuff like the apple cube or 'the your holding it wrong' debacle instead of admitting the antenna was grounded wrong..
all the ones that were successful were neither the first to market nor the best available either, they were only the best marketed. if you looked past the ad's and away from best buy or target you could find great deals on much better products.
that's where he excelled as a marketing guy. he also seemed to have reached new lows before he died though in abusing the legal system to get a complete ban on any sort or rectangular thin computer device in Germany (see here: http://www.dailytech.com/Apple+Crushes+Samsung+in+German+Court+Galaxy+Tab+101+Ban+is+Complete/article22682.htm ) and other countries using photoshoped( see here: http://www.itworld.com/it-managementstrategy/195473/apple-files-inaccurate-evidence-dutch-samsung-case and here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/238047/apple_offers_flawed_evidence_in_lawsuit_against_samsung.html ) pictures that were made to make the galaxy tab look more similar to the ipad then it actually was. But i guess android out selling apple's iphone( see here: http://www.mobilemarketingwatch.com/android-outsells-iphone-2-to-1-in-summer-smartphone-sales-18775/ ) was too much of a blow to his ego to get those 'inovating juices' flowing?

Re:It feels too heavy and old
Considering you're the dipshit that can't even quote correctly? Glass houses and all that. at least have the balls to use the correct quote which is "As far as the users are concerned there is no command line in Windows" and I fucking dare you to prove me wrong. Walk up to the next 100 people on the street and ask them dipshit, ask them "How do you get the command line in Windows?" and you know what they'll say? "what's command line?" because nobody uses that shit in windows dumbass, nobody.
But hey, if you want to be IN DENIAL that your OS doesn't fucking work without a 70s era term, that companies like Dell have to run their own repos even though they only offer Linux on a teeny tiny subset of hardware because Linux shits itself and dies if you use the default repos (quality OS you got there friend), that your brand new OS got its ass beat by a decade old OS on netbooks, that major retailers like Walmart are running away from Linux as fast as it can and that even the company that started netbooks with Linux have given up on your CLI heavy bullshit, or that there is even a site dedicated To your bullshit and excuses? Who am I to deny you your illusion?
Now you be sure to tell us how its all a conspiracy of Gates and the Illuminati, that anyone who isn't sucking the koolaid must be a "sekret M$ Ninja!" getting paid the big bux to keep your magical OS down, that if folks would just heed the great RMS the world would be flowers and ponies. it couldn't be that NOBODY WANTS TO GO BACK TO THE 70s! Nope, folks love punch cards and PDPs! CLI makes your neckbeard thick and gives you gonad powerz!
Kinda funny how the ONLY success Linux has seen is Android, which google took away from the community huh? and what IS Android? Why its all GUI, no CLI, all clicky clicky wonderful, that's what it is! So have the balls to quote me correctly or are you afraid I'm right?

The parent post is from Alex Belits, a jobless Linux astroturfer. Last time he submitted his resume to anyone was when he tried to be Linus Torvalds bootlicker and was turned down for drool.
See how nicely that fits there loony tunes? Oh and I'm not working for anyone but myself, I am your worst nightmare...I'm a retailer. you see we have tried your product and found your bullshit and lies to be just that so maybe you'd like me to enlighten some of the masses, hmm?,
Isn't it sad, how like a frightened child afraid to look under the bed, you cower at the truth? if your driver model isn't shit then why does Dell have to run their own repos even though we are talking a teeny tiny subset of hardware? Oh right because Linux shits itself and dies if you use the default repos! Man that is some excellent product you got there! Bleeding yet douchey? want some more? nice thing about having the truth on your side, you can keep throwing punches all day! How about how a decade old Windows beat the shit out of Linux on netbooks or how ASUS has given up on your bullshit or how about Walmart running away from linux as fast as it can? You got the crazy koolaid drunk enough to say they ALL are paid shills because they won't do your forum dance or CLI horseshit? Meanwhile your "hero" Torvalds the great says Plans? We don't need no steenkin plans!. Why don't you tell them that at work next week, see how quick you get a pink slip? More? How about you actually have the balls to celebrate getting a whole 1% market share while you are actually lower than JavaME and there is a whole website dedicated To your bullshit and excuses.
Meanwhile i'll go back to enjoying my nice new Asus EEE Windows 7 HP netbook, which I got myself as a little prezzie with some of the profits I made from NOT carrying an inferior product. If you don't like being last? Try putting out a product worth actually stocking. You know what you remind me of? A religious nutball. When someone points out a hole in your dogma you go "La la la, it can't be true! U must be a M$ Ninja!" while we all laugh at your batshit insanity. But hey friend here is a nice video of your hero RMS showing why he is the great one so that should cheer you up.
Nice try, Ballmer.

Re:Holy crap!
Yep, http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/collection/5928/2011_free_av.html it's just about on any list....
I remember back in 2010 it hit like #2 in terms of detection, but I can't find that study anymore, it hit like 99.5+% detection. Made me go hmm, I guess MS knows their own shit best. It works, it really does, it's just not very advertised or known because it's free and MS won't spend revenue telling newbs to download it. I prefer it over the ESET we use at work actually, it doesn't f w your system like norton and mcafee do. On that note, I can set up comodo via f'in w my system for a while to be the superior product by a mile, but that probably requires some serious computer knowledge, I can't tell anymore

Oops, it seems I've woken up a delusional Linux zealot Sorry
/.. At least he's very amusing. See how nicely that fits? Oh if I wanted I could smack your ass around with the truth all day long, you see that is the nice thing about reality, you have the truth on your side, how about a teeny tiny taste? How about how a decade old Windows beat the shit out of the latest Linux on netbooks or how ASUS has given up on your bullshit or how about Walmart running away from linux as fast as it can? .Now right there is a ton of links showing WHAT I HAVE SAID IS TRUE now can YOU do the same? Why no, instead you'll go "La la la I can't hear you, CLI gives me gonad powers and copypasta into a 70s term makes me leet! You must be an M$ Ninja!"
Now accept you are WRONG AND FULL OF SHIT and move on kid. Nobody cares or uses CLI or start>run in Windows except guys that ran DOS and have a raging case of nostalgia. Your OS CANNOT RUN WITHOUT CLI and frankly wouldn't last even a day without one in most cases.
I repeat, do you know what the definition of insanity is? Because here it is, 2011, and as I politely gave you the link to your numbers are worse than a shitty Java phone OS and the numbers don't lie. How big of a damned clue bat does someone have to smack you with before you accept that NOBODY WANTS CLI BUT NECKBEARDS and that a good 99.999998% of the population is NOT NECKBEARDS.
Accept it, give the customer what they want, or watch as they ignore your CLI heavy fiddly little mess. You see, that is the nice thing about a free market, we are free to NOT TAKE YOUR OS if it sucks or doesn't behave the way we want it to. you hang onto your CLI like a Tux blankie and see where your OS is in 5 years, because I'll tell you EXACTLY where it'll be in 5 years if you don't change....less than the margin for error, just where it is now and has been FOR TWENTY DAMNED YEARS NOW.
I'm your worst fucking nightmare...a retailer that still believes. I believe that the community doesn't have to take Torvalds shit sandwiches, I believe that things can be made better, I believe Linux can be something for more than elitist douchebags like you that will happily take a broken worthless garbage as long as you can say you are sticking to "teh man". I believe that there can be Linux boxes on actual shelves and penguins on boxes.

Re:Two factor, three factor
Man, you are a broken record. We already talked about this a few days ago, but you are stubborn. I talked nicely then, but you really should leave security to people who have a clue. My karma can take the flak, so I'll be caustic.
Who can trust a CA? Why would you trust a CA? How did a CA earn your trust?
You trust CAs because the server you are talking with, by itself, can't confirm nor deny it is who it says it is: you need a third party and you said it yourself a few lines below. You trust those CAs because it's an audit-only club, and the friggin' web browser's company checked it. I trust those approved CAs because I trust the company backing up my web browser (if you don't, you lost the game right at the beginning). I use Firefox a lot more than Lynx because it's usable, go figure: they checked those third parties and said they can be trusted. End of story.
Mozilla, it's time to own up. This is a bunch of nonsense. Stop treating self signed certificates like cancer, provide a way to see the fingerprint clearly, don't bother with the 'lock' icon and start working on some real innovation - how to do trust by having distributed lists of fingerprints, signatures, whatever. Something that doesn't rely on a signing authority at all.
So, I enter americanexpress.com and a web page tells me "This is a self-signed certificate, nobody backs it up but I promise I am who I am". Riiiiight. Let's suppose they even give me a fingerprint or signature or whatever... That means squat: a certificate from an impostor also has a fingerprint. With what/whom do I check it, then?
A distributed list of fingerprints, signatures, whatever"
How adorable, you trust in a bunch of lists. Or, I should say, a third party. How you can make this work without thinking this as a distributed CA schema instead of a self-signed certificate eludes me. If there are plenty of lists and your certificate gets compromised, how can you change them in a timely manner? It's like those corrupt files on eMule that never vanish. If everyone and their mothers can add lists, I just need to control N lists (either by hacking or creating those myself) that say your certificate is false and it's game over. The only way I can trust those "lists" is if they audit with someone I or Mozilla trust, and we are back to square 1 with the system that's currently in place, but instead of adding a single CA, you add more that back your certificate. I told you I agree with that idea of multiple CA validation (I heard some people call them notaries, it's the same crap with different smell), yet on your previous post you told me that's not a CA or how web browsers should handle it.
You want to do real innovation instead of looking at hiding address bar from the users? Do this instead.
So that's why that company died five years ago! They didn't listen to your suggestions! Oh, wait, I met two fellas from Mozilla and they still make ends meet...
I won't bother replying or seeing responses. It irritates me to hearing the same bad idea twice.

Re:Consider me naive...
According to this article:
"Actually I think the secret service domains are the least alarming part. It's sexy, and will probably lead to a lot of questions and interest from government agencies. Of course, nobody wants to get caught with their pants down, but there's really no classified information on these domains. Those are on separate, secured internal networks. So the practical security impact of the Iranian government getting a certificate for the CIA is nill. It's really just very embarrassing, that's all," said Soghoian in an interview with Webwereld. -

Secret to HP's Black Ink ?
This PC World article from 2003, http://www.pcworld.com/article/112199/why_do_ink_cartridges_cost_so_much.html, might actually have understated the mark up in the HP ink cartridges which, on the books, accounted for 50% of HP profits during some years. Taking something that costs as much as a pack of ball point pens and charging $22 for it was "visionary" for awhile, and Dell tried to follow HP into the giveaway-printers-to-sell-cartridges model. But the "Gillette" strategy - making money on the blades, not the razor - may not work fit the strategy of outsource to China. Did Gillette ever outsource their razor blade manufacturing?

Failure Rate
If the mean time between failure of a hard drive is around two hundred thousand hours, and this disk garden has two hundred thousand drives won't the technicians be replacing a drive every hour or so? Don't believe the MTBF figures from the drive manufacturers. Those appear to be butt numbers. http://www.pcworld.com/article/129558/study_hard_drive_failure_rates_much_higher_than_makers_estimate.html
.... Two hundred thousand water cooled hard drives? How much does this fucking thing weigh? Allowing for half a pint of coolant in the pipes for each hard drive the figure comes out to over one hundred thousand pounds. That doesn't count the plumbing and coolant distribution system and heat exchanger. .... Two hundred thousand drives with plumbing for water cooling will take up a healthy sized volume. The drives alone require on the order of four million cubic inches. I have to wonder if this is a proof of concept storage array for DARPA on behalf of an alphabet agency that needs a place to park all their spy photos and sigint. -
Re:Stroking a blow!
Oh please, Poor wittle Lunix user has to think everyone that dislikes your product is a shill. No I'm your worst fucking nightmare...I've actually used your product. And unlike the "stick it to teh man LOL!" types I didn't drink the koolaid. but hey don't take MY word for it, lets ask some people like ASUS who has given up on your bullshit or Walmart who ran away from linux as fast as it could how great your products are? would you like for me to post a couple of dozen point out the same with LO? I'd be quite happy to if you'd like.
Your compatibility? SHIT. Your support for macros? TOTAL SHIT. PPT support? RUNNING FOUL SHIT. Support for complex Excel sheets? BEYOND NASTY SHIT.
But don't worry I've banned anything to do with Linux from my browser, please go back to your circle jerks and I'll just laugh when it fails like Munich all over again. Would you like links to the article from slashdot where everyone had a circle jerk about how big a success THAT was gonna be? I'd be happy to post it!

Re:Some might argue
So lets see, your response is...suckup suckup suckup, bullshit bullshit bullshit and finally "Fight teh powerz!" am I right? Sum it up?
I don't give a shit if in 1979 he invented the fucking takeout pizza okay? WTF does what he did in the past matter now? does that give him a "be a douchebag free" card? I guess it does as far as you're concerned.
And what are you fucking smoking? What corp in their right mind would be running 16 bit apps nearly 15 YEARS after support ended? Security hole much? hell why not just put some Win98 machines on the network while you're at it. Anybody who actually needs code THAT old has these wonderful things called "VMs" maybe you've heard of them? because nobody in their right mind is gonna let a gaping security hole like 16 bit crapola run on a modern desktop. Oh and how does that 16bit code run on 64bit Linux? Oh that's right IT DON'T.
And I'm about as jealous of Linus dumbass Torvalds as I am of any other cult figure, that is NOT AT ALL. If anything all I feel is pity, pity that otherwise sane people (I assume you're sane, can't tell by your post) would bend over backwards to kiss his ass and take the big steaming turds he hands you and say "Please sir, can I sniff your asshole?". FACT-It has been TWENTY YEARS and Linux is NO FURTHER on the desktop than when it started 20 YEARS AGO. FACT- OSX, BSD, Windows, hell even OS/2 have an ABI and guess what? the DRIVERS WORK which is more than can be said for Linux. But why am I wasting my breath, maybe you'd enjoy some nice copypasta where I point out what a TOTAL FAILURE LINUX IS? As for why it pisses me off, it pisses me off because it COULD be good, if it weren't for assholes like Torvalds and suckups like you. Enjoy
Isn't it sad, how like a frightened child afraid to look under the bed, you cower at the truth? if your driver model isn't shit then why does Dell have to run their own repos even though we are talking a teeny tiny subset of hardware? Re:This is clearly a valid patent
This is a great defense fans have invented here for Google. Every company should use it. "It's okay when we do it! We're just trying to show how bad the patent system is!"
P.S. They also patented the changing of their logo for holidays back in 2001.
-
Re:Nothing to see here
Oh, I see, so when Google patents absurd things, it's a protest against the patent system. Like when they patented changing their logo for special events and holidays back in 2001. Thank goodness Google is rebelling against the patent system by patenting the invention of "periodically changing story line and/or special event company logo to entice users to access a web page."
-
Re:Nothing to see here
Google even patented the changing of their logo for holiday events, filed by Sergey Brin himself.

Re:Wrong, Apple shot first
you don't see them suing HTC or Sony or any of several other manufacturers who make Android handsets
You might not, because you're not looking: Apple Sues HTC
Man, that took all of one search on Google to find. (Try "Apple sues HTC.")
If you want others, you can also try just flat-out searching for "Apple sues Android" which will get you such gems as Apple suing Motorola over Android and Amazon.com over having an App Store.
I can't find anything for them suing Sony in particular, but there's a lot of speculation that if they win their HTC suit, they'll be able to use that against every Android phone maker. So the best you can say is that they're not suing Sony yet.

MSI must have a time machine
Given that their X-Slim series has been around for several years before Intel's "ultrabook" announcement but it is, basically, an "ultrabook". The link above is deliberately to an AMD-powered one just for yucks, but my X340 is pure Core2 and cost all of $390. They're actually damn nice machines, even if Intel is a bit late to the party with their reinvention of them.

Re:It's sad actually
For the price an Apple computer costs it SHOULD be good quality. Sadly just because something looks good quality doesn't mean it is. It's not hard to find a litany of faults which have affected MacBook computers over the years. Expanding batteries, cracked casings, yellowing casing, overheating CPUs, warping, MagSafe shorting and fires etc. It's not surprising in some respect because Apple do push the limits of industrial design. But what looks nice does not always equate into good build quality or reliability either.
By any quantitative survey done, Apple's failure rate is no worse, and often better, than any other company in the industry
http://www.pcworld.com/article/211402/reliability_and_service_laptops.html
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2384243,00.aspYou can Google up "hp laptop crack..." or "dell screen..." and watch the autocomplete and you'll find the same things. Computers all fail in the same ways, big surprise. The question is how often.
If your failure rate is 15% and you sell ten million computers a year, you'll have 1,500,000 angry users on the Internet complaining. (Also, Apple gives all its computers the same name. So "macbook cracking" generates a lot more hits than "hp1337asdfqwerrtyuiop cracking")

Re:Having to jail break your own freaking phone
HTC are actually going to continue to ship phones with locked bootloaders, and release an unlocking tool on the support website for them: presumably it's a warranty and support thing, and possibly a security one as well: it sounds pretty convoluted, but then, so is the current root exploit - su binary - engineering bootloader - S-OFF process to get custom firmware on there anyway. I'd prefer them to just have a button in the settings menu (like the Nexus One had for root), but the extra layers of "here be dragons" will probably stop people from doing it without realising the implications of trusting a firmware dev - if you could reflash phones straight-up, I suspect we'd see a bunch of custom Kesha ROMs loaded with trojans.

Or at least they did last quarter in terms of unit sales in the U.S. according to NPD's study, which found that RIM's BlackBerries held 36 percent of the market, phones running Google's Android had 28 percent, and the iPhone was at 21 percent."

Unlike selling your kidney for an iPad 2
they didn't seem to regret their transaction(s) because they sold three kids (and not all at once). They seem to have gotten better at it as they went along, getting higher and higher prices. (Or maybe the later ones were just cuter/harder working).

Re:read negative ones?
Oh wow, proof that from the very beginning
/. had total whackjobs! And I noticed you are TOO SCARED to post anymore unless it has left the front page. Whats the matter Alex, karma starting to suck? I guess we "super sekret M$ ninjas" smack the shit out of little blankie huggers like you. But since you like being cock slapped by the truth so much, as a public service I show your failure yet again! Enjoy!Isn't it sad, how like a frightened child afraid to look under the bed, you cower at the truth? if your driver model isn't shit then why does Dell have to run their own repos even though we are talking a teeny tiny subset of hardware? Oh right because Linux shits itself and dies if you use the default repos! Man that is some excellent product you got there! you think I can get better QA than the third largest OEM on the planet? What, you expect me to tell paying customers "Go to the forum, kiss some loser ass, and maybe, just maybe, in a few days someone will have mercy and give you a big pile of bullshit that may or may not make your sound work again"?
Bleeding yet douchey? want some more? nice thing about having the truth on your side, you can keep throwing punches all day! How about you actually have the balls to celebrate getting a whole 1% market share while you are actually lower than JavaME and there is a whole website dedicated To your bullshit and excuses

Re:Sorry, disagree that SHA/MD5 is a solution
Again, bullshit. Keychains add real security. You can't just mount the filesystem and read the contents of the keychain. You can't use an app on a rooted/jailbroken iPhone to read the keychain contents.
What about this - they run an app on a jailbroken phone and get access to the contents of the keychain.
And what about Elcomsoft's forensic tools? They claim "The toolkit allows eligible customers acquiring bit-to-bit images of devices’ file systems, extracting phone secrets (passcodes, passwords, and encryption keys) and decrypting the file system dump. Access to most information is provided in real-time. In addition to Elcomsoft Phone Password Breaker, the toolkit includes the ability to decrypt images of devices’ file systems, as well as a free tool that can extract the encrypted file system out of the device in raw form."
If an encrypted disk image can be decrypted by an attacker in realtime, then the encryption is not so good, is it?
-
Re:Sorry, disagree that SHA/MD5 is a solution
A few months ago: APPLE STORED YOUR LOCATION DATA IN PLAIN TEXT!!! HOW STUPID ARE THEY? THE ONLY EXPLANATION IS THEY ARE TRACKING YOU!!! PEOPLE WILL BE STALKED USING THIS!!!
People (including many iPhone owners) were upset because Apple was storing location data at all, not because it wasn't encrypted.
Somehow, the OS X and iOS keychain manages to use encryption to protect passwords
Keychain stored passwords are encrypted using a key derived from data on the device. Encrypting data and storing the encrypted data on the phone along with the decryption key provides no security benefits - apparently it's trivial to extract Keychain passwords once you have software running as root on the device, link: "The attack works because the cryptographic key on current iOS devices is based on material available within the device and is independent of the passcode"
the entire disk on iOS (after the 3GS, I think, maybe the 3G) is encrypted, and processes are blocked from reading files outside of their sandbox.
Wired says different: Hacker Says iPhone 3GS Encryption Is ‘Useless’ for Businesses:
'Apple claims that hundreds of thousands of iPhones are being used by corporations and government agencies. What it won’t tell you is that the supposedly enterprise-friendly encryption included with the iPhone 3GS is so weak it can be cracked in two minutes with a few pieces of readily available freeware. “It is kind of like storing all your secret messages right next to the secret decoder ring,” said Jonathan Zdziarski, an iPhone developer and a hacker who teaches forensics courses on recovering data from iPhones. “I don’t think any of us [developers] have ever seen encryption implemented so poorly before, which is why it’s hard to describe why it’s such a big threat to security.'

Re:There's useless, and then there is USELESS
Which as many Android enthusiasts point out is terribly easy to do. While it does not affect every user it affects huge subset of users.
In Linux a process will only run as root if you run it as root. A random process will not suddenly start running with root priviledges just because you enabled root logins (which is all that "rooting" does).
On the iPhone, even if you've jailbroken it there's no such weakness thanks to the Keychain. Jailbreaking allows side loading, it does not break the entire security model and expose things as basic as email passwords.
Apparently that is not true. According to this, you can access Keychain passwords if you have a jailbroken phone: "The attack works because the cryptographic key on current iOS devices is based on material available within the device and is independent of the passcode." Well, that is pretty much the same as Android. Encryption isn't much use if the key is stored or derived from data on the device.

Actually Alex I'm starting to become convinced that IT IS YOU that is working for Microsoft ZOMG! After all you are doing more to make Linux users look like completely batshit basement dwelling loonie toons than anybody since Twitter and his "It is Bill Gates and the Illuminati in a world wide conspiracy to kill FLOSS!". Re:apple needs to make some hardware changes for b
Needs to have some kind of hardware / software road map
Why? What use it that? Current desktop systems will suffice, plan for three years of use. Why do you NEED to know what else is coming?
Mini and Imac's need to easy to open at least being able get to the HDD
I'm not sure how it gets any easier that screwing off the bottom of a Mini to get to HD and RAM. That changed a few years ago...
Let Business send in systems for warranty work with out a HDD in side
That would be useful, are you sure Apple disallows it?
Better pricing VS dell and others at least for big orders of hardware
I'm not sure Apple will really play that game to the extent Dell does but they DO offer business discounts (something like10% on new systems).
allow some OS downgrades on new hardware
They do support SL on all but the very more recent systems. That is an area where businesses get kind of annoyed because of training issues...
App store for business
You mean like the Apple Apps Volume Purchase program? Or the fact that any enterprise can simply put custom apps up on a server and allow devices to download them directly?
smaller OS update downloads
Happily the app store does delta updates now.
some kind of desktop mid tower or at least a easy to open mac mini system
Which as noted they've had for a year or two now.
Let MAC OS server run on ANY VM
That would be good, not sure what the license is like on that now... it would make a lot of sense since they don't have the XServe anymore.

The IE market share in the PRC won't last
because Baidu, the most popular search engine over there, is working on a browser of its own which guessing by the screenshots is based on Chrom{-e, -ium}.

Re:What else is new.
Sure thing friend, all you had to do was ask. Allow me to quote some of the relevant text for you " Microsoft indemnifies its Windows Phone 7 licensees against patent infringement claims," the company said. "We stand behind our product, and step up to our responsibility to clear the necessary IP rights" end quote.
So I would say that Google refusing to go to bat for Android OEMs plays right into MSFT's hand. MSFT will point to these lawsuits and say "See? It is like we told you. if you sign up for WinPhone you wouldn't be putting your business at risk, because we've got your back and stand beside OUR OS, unlike the other guy" and when you are talking about the incredible amount of money you have to spend nowadays in court fees and lawyers even if you win? That could easily make the cost of the WinPhone license WELL worth it. Damned shame though, as I really like the droid OS from what I've seen of it.

probably slower
I would suspect that its slower. http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/222046/atrix_4g_speeds_reported_slower_than_3g.html

Wow, you are TRULY batshit aren't you? here we are talking about Adobe and Linux, nobody says a damned word about Windows anything, yet it MUST be that I'm a super secret stealth ninja for MSFT just waiting to ambush your 'precious'. But hey this retailer will be more than happy to give your OS a good slapping around if it makes ya happy Alex, lets begin shall we?

I believe that the community doesn't have to take Torvalds shit sandwiches, I believe that things can be made better, I believe Linux can be something for more than douchebags like you that will happily take a cock slapping from linus as long as you can say you are sticking to "teh man". And for the actual Linux USERS out there, not the batshit "It is a plot by gates and the Illuminati to kill FLOSS" nutjobs like Alex? As a retailer let me say this: i like your OS, your GUI is in many ways superior to what is out there, but the driver model is shit. I don't care if you use an ABI or sacrifice Linus to Cthulu fix this one damned problem so my customers can run updates without the OS having a heart attack and hosing the drivers? i'll be happy to put Linux boxes back on the shelve

Re:With the end of unlimited data plans...?
My view is they are very much the same if not identical
The iPhone is 960-by-640 at 330ppi. The Torch/9800 is about on par with the iPhone 3 at 480x360, and isn't nearly as bright. See this article. Note the icon comparison.
If you can't tell the difference, you must need glasses for close work.
Why do people say the browser is poor?
Because it is. Can you pinch/zoom without it stuttering? Does it display the checkboard often? Is to slow to go back and forth? The answer to all of these is: No, Yes and Yes. It works well compared to the OS5 browser, but it's just not as good as the iPhone or Android ones. A lot of this is due to the Torch being significantly underpowered versus the iPhone (which is inexcusable given that it came out slightly after the iPhone did and evidence of the what this article is supposing about Laziridis' lack of understanding.
Now, it's not a bad browser. It's pretty good, in fact. If you hadn't seen the iPhone, it would be brilliant and the optical pad is a nice touch for precision work (and something that Playbook could have used!) but it doesn't match the experience of the 3GS, which was over a year old at the time, let alone the 4.

Re:Microsoft Research
intentionally crashing competitor's products at trade shows.
If some FSF activist was doing it to Windows you'd think it was wonderful. And it's hardly unexpected that a CEO would point out the weaknesses in a competitors products when asked.
Anyway he was right about "Developers! Developers! Developers!" being the key to Windows. It's a pity he didn't take his own advice with Windows Phone 7 - all the Windows Mobile ISPs have said they won't support it because they'd be forced to rewrite all the C/C++ code in C# and then jump hurdles to get in the app store. So the App store may have 11,000 applications but most of them are written by hobbyists of Microsoft employees in their spare time. Meanwhile Android has things like Opera and Firefox. Also Android has 150,000 and iOS has 300,000.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/223861/windows_phone_7_app_store_still_lags_behind_apple_android.html
If Windows 8 is anything like as locked down as Windows Phone 7 - and they look pretty much the same even when Windows 8 is not running on a tablet which is a terrible blunder - Windows 8 will fail much worse than Vista did. Maybe was badly as Windows Phone 7. Mind you on mobiles there's a viable replacement for Microsoft's OS. I can't see people and ISVs jumping ship from Windows to Linux or Macs the way they are almost certain to from Windows Mobile to Android.
Also even Ballmer isn't stupid enough to sink the company by trying to turn desktop Windows into a locked down system like XBox or WP7 I suspect.

Re:What exactly are these patents?
Not sure how accurate it is(after all it is pcworld), and it does seem to only mention these are for the Nook and Nook Color, but its at least _something_, and I would argue it is not a stretch to imagine these, or similar, being applied to the other companies which ship/sell products that run Android..
Microsoft Alleges Android Patent Infringement by Nook eReader
(Patent numbers included for further research).
Seems to me to be pretty obvious UI/usability "enhancements", but you know what they say about hindsight.
<rant>
I understand why the USPO grants superfluous software patents, but that system sorely needs an overhauling. They either need to do away with software patents all together(probably the wrong solution), charge based on patent application(even better, the number of patent applications submitted), set a new, lower limit for the lifetime of software patents, or revisit the screening/reviewing process(which we know is against their best interest).
