Re:Don't forget...
And Sluggy Freelance (long, complex, and interesting story arcs, which are hillarious to boot), Penny Arcade (extreme funny), Player vs Player (more fun(ny) with gaming), Sinfest (offensive and funny), and Adventurers (hillarious -- but only if you play console RPG's)! There are so many awesome web comics!
------ -
How could you leave out...
Penny Arcade?!
Maybe they didn't mention it because Penny Arcade is only funny if you're a (relatively) hardcore gamer.. -
PVP?
come on, people! check out PVP, my favorite online comic besides penny-arcade.

LOPOW
For the not-so-faint-of-heart, keenspot has a great "List Of Potentially Offensive Webcomics". Classics such as SpaceMoose, and Celebrity Car Wash figure prominently. Also contains links to the newer low brow comics on the web.
On a completely different note, here are my personal faves: Penny Arcade, Sluggy Freelance, Exploitation Now!, MegaTokyo, Red Meat, HotenDotey, and Jerk City.
I am sure I forgot a couple of my regulars, but these are the major ones.

Don't forget some of my favorites:
Penny Arcade
The Parking Lot is Full
Pope Alien
And many others that just don't pop into mind now. -
You missed the best ones!Your list of links has no mention of PvP, Sinfest or Penny Arcade.
LOL, that other online comic looks like it was created by a pre-schooler.
;p~ -
So many..
With so many cartoons out there, why do so many of them suck? For starters we have: Dave, Cathy, Family Circus and Spiderman! I mean, if these people just looked around they could find some good cartoons like Penny Arcade, Sluggy Freelance, and some of the stuff on Keenspace, like MacHall. I'm sure there are a bunch of starving comic writers who are dying for syndication while a lot of cartoons that really suck are being published.

Best comics ignored?
The best online comics somehow escaped mention. Without a doubt, Penny Arcade and Friend Bear are the two funniest comics around these days. Userfriendly? That piece of junk was, in my opinion, never funny. Dumb jokes about the same computer shit every week? No, thanks; PA has that category in the bag.
Hell, even CC vs. CC is better than some of this crap :) I never understood why some of this stuff got so popular - maybe I'm spoiled.
Cheers,

Other web comic suggestion...Another web comic with a lot of history and a lot of humor is Player vs Player which is VERY funny. Highly suggested you start from the begining and read them all!
Penny Aracade has changed a lot over the past 6 months, and I'm not sure if it's for the best. But the last three have been a return to old values so we'll see what happens. Plus, the entire controversy around their sudden unplugging might make them return to the old good stuff. `8r) Now, if the stupid ads built into their comic didn't freak out firewall constantly... `8r/
Oh, and cause I can: Wang!

Re:Hmm (AKA Games will be the death of society)You spoke of gamers:
They are not socializing the same, and the undoubted result is the loss of things like Slashdot. There are good and bad effects here, and I think this shows how the internet can be negative - people using the internet imagine they are socializing when in fact they are not. This makes society a less sociable place, which has a number of bad effects:
I used to think the same way. I'm not so sure anymore.List of how self-involved gaming will cause lawlessness, issolation, recession, apocolypse, and bad rashes.
There is a great online comics scene out there, and some of the best are all about modern gaming. Comics like Penny Arcade and Player vs. Player (PvP) are consistantly funny and high quality. What's more, they give a shared experience, and often foster a community.
In a bit of nostalgia-meets-the-Internet, Gamers have resurected one of the shining examples of bad localization. The folks who translated ZeroWing did an awful job, and the results are so bad they are funny. The phrases recently became popular again, and you'll hear cries of "ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US" across the Internet.
These same gamers shut off the connection for a while to fire up the photo editor and create some great parodies. Many are posted to message boards to be appreciated by fellow fans. Some of them made a dubbed version, others made a techno soundtrack (search for "Laziest Men On Mars, "All Your Base Are Belong To Us"), and others made a hilarious flash movie.
All this creativity was spawned by this later version of gamers. More that ever, I think creative people are meeting and interacting online, and the new games are, at worst, better versions of television, and, at best, a tool for creating a common experience, so that strangers can meet each other.
All this is a bit off-topic, but I think you are worried over nothing. I'm hoping they do a good job with the new TradeWars, which I remember as fondly as other Slashdotters (...in my day, 2400 baud modems, 1 hour just to download 1 meg of porn, etc...)

Don't take it personally.
If you don't want to be ignored on
/. you have to make a strong statement, with no space wasted on quibbling over details. My post was moderated up because it presents an interesting idea in a short enough form to not waste the reader's time with strong enough language to break through the simplistic "standards == good" mindset. Like most successful posts on complicated subjects, it lacks balance and annoys a lot of people.
Readers can control how much balance they get by how many replies they choose to read. You make good points, but try to imagine slashdot as a debate, where people stick to their assigned premise and refuse to be shaken from it regardless of any arguments or whether it's at all a rational viewpoint; offensive things naturally come out of it and nobody means it personally.
It's a strange day when I fully agree with one of my own /. posts. I usually come out of it a bit like this.

Re:Most people over 60 should NOT have life insura>what are your odds of dying under 60?
This is exactly what the insurance companies want to find out. If they can deny coverage to people with a high probability of becoming terminally ill while young, they can increase their profits. Basically, they want to make sure that you pay many times your coverage before anything gets paid.
"We here at Ripemoff Insurance just want to ensure that the death of a family member does not place financial burden on the surviving members. And we've always really liked fat sacks full of cash money."

"Would you like to stay for lunch? I think we're having MONEY!"

I was tortured with go bots but
I grew to love them - but Legos were my true passion. In reading UGO's transformer page they had up when the DVD came out (Cant find the url - sorry) it mentioned that after the first season the movie came out and thats when the robots were destroyed. GENUIS! Everyone buys the $8 a pop toys and then they have to have the new ones cause their old toys are dead!
There is this PA tho -
Daily Radar Sucks
Don't even go off of what Daily Radar says...
Sega rumors which have already been shown to be false...
And then, last time it was the "Nintendo is suing us for screenshots" story which as it turns out, they were actually suing the media conglomerate Imagine that owns their site because they were apparently publishing books with trademarked and copyrighted Pokemon drawings all over it.
There is a really funny
Penny-Arcade comic strip that covers the issue pretty well in my mind. :) -
Re:Bright Guy, Great AuthorWhada ya mean "It's kind of sad that he now works for Microsoft"? Yes, that means he won't be working on Quake X, but Quake is doing fine on it's own. Yes, it means he may have to be a little secretive on what he is doing, but you know he's working, and that the results will be spectacular. When Penny Arcade has a hard time getting one of them to hate the XBox, you know Microsoft is doing well, and the gaming world should send another big thank-you card to Abrash.
Plus, if he can just spend a little time optimizing the DirectX code, then EVERY game benefits. You know that if he finds any new tricks, he'll report on them, and even the free software world will benefit. Check out this link at Dr. Dobb's journal for a taste of what he is doing at Microsoft, and why it is important.
Like he says in the article, the important thing is to do, not to think, and there's a lot of optimization to do at Microsoft.

Go the crack dealer route...
I think the most obvious route for online comics is to realize that you will get little or no revenue if you try to charge for a comic that isn't already popular. However, if you give it to them for free and then squeeze them later you'll have better luck. Anyone else buy Doom or Quake after playing the shareware versions?
Offer your comic for free. If it's worth paying money for then people will buy merchandise later. Look at the disgusting amount of Garfield or Peanuts crap available just about everywhere. People don't *have* to buy the books, shirts or coffee mugs to read the comic strip in the paper, but they do buy them.
Check out Penny Arcade
They did a great job on a free comic and are now selling out of their t-shirts and recently started taking orders for a hard and soft-cover book. I read it every other day and I'm seriously considering the book.

The reason for harsh EULAsWill id software really sue you for producing a Quake mod? Of course not. Unless, of course, my "mod" is one that removes the words "Quake" and "id software" and replaces them with "Todd's Super Cool Shoot-a-thon!" and "Todd Software".
The problem being, there is no easy legal way to distinguish between a benevolent mod and an evil one. (Sadly, the phrase, "Total dickhead move" is too ambiguous of a term to stand up in court.) This leaves id software's legal department with little choice but to say, "No mods", but only enforce it in the case of truly evil mods.
The same holds true for most of the other cases --I'm sure the makers of Rainbow Six won't mind if I post a screenshot on my little game-review web site. But if I'm the maker of "Counter Terrorist Team Seven!" and I want to start ragging on Rainbow Six's graphics on my site, they would mind.
The major problem with all of this is that it's pretty much up to the companies themselves to determine what's a total dickhead move worth enforcing and what's not, and if you read their minds incorrectly, you can get burned.

Re:Enough of these rumorsLack of modem/ethernet? All the new online games coming out for DC this holiday season are impressive. PS2 owners won't get that anytime soon.
Yeah, but will Dreamcast users? From what I've heard, Sega's online service had some troubles on launch (enough to get a Penny Arcade cartoon). Besides, most on-line games over dialup are laggy and just seem to play poorly (mostly depending on the latency between server/players). Plus, I have to wonder how servers work - do you start up a server on your DC, or do you play off the official Sega.net servers?
It's possible that Sony is actually wise in waiting. As most people have pointed out, this is the initial release of a system. Wait for it to become stable. It's not the launch titles I'm interested in, it's MGS2 and FFX. Some time next year, I might actually find myself getting a PS2. But right now, it's not worth it. It takes time for good games - you have to be patient with new consoles. Especially with the PS2, since it is a very radical change in the way most games run. Whether this helps or hurts it in the long run remains to be seen.
(And, with Sony, you have to wait three or four "versions" before they create one that doesn't break just after the warranty period...)
-
XDOThe X-Box is strangely reminiscent of 3DO. When I worked for 3DO, five years ago, we were still making consoles and licensing any title that came to our offices. The only requirement for a license was $3 per unit sale, and a fairly precise format restriction (meaning how the data is laid onto the CD). There was nothing about content or quality.
As a result, the market was quickly flooded with mediocre games and Japanese "Strip" titles ranging from the traditional mah-jongg to (I kid you not) *two* versions of rock-paper-scissors.
Most of these were from production houses that we nicknamed "One-Take Video", for the incredibly shoddy camerawork and the lack of talent beyond "80cm, 55cm, 78cm". And did I really need to know my opponent's blood type?
:)But 3DO's market wasn't destroyed by smut. Poor as the quality may have been, these titles shone like the moon compared to titles like "Plumbers Don't Wear Ties" (an American attempt at erotic gaming), "Virtuoso" (a heavy-metal guitarist picks up sawed-off shotguns and fights aliens from Dimension Dope-Ass), and "Shadow: War Of Succession" (imagine Street Fighter with sub-South-Park graphics where the first player who presses "Kick" wins).
Consumers were confronted with absolutely awful games for an overpriced system. "But wait!" I hear you cry, "Isn't it the *great* titles that get attention?"
It would be, if anyone knew about them. 3DO spent next to nothing on advertising. 3DO's affiliates, partners, and licensees spent even less. Virtually all of 3DO's exposure came from trade shows and industry magazine articles, written by people with no vested interest in the company's success.
So how will the X-Box be different?
Money. Cash money. Fat Sacks Full of Cash Money. Microsoft cannot run out of money. Nothing they can legally do could possibly break them. They currently maintain so many products that will never earn them money that one more isn't even going to show up on the balance sheet.
"Expenditures (in gazillions):"
"Overhead: X-Box 0.034"
So in this humble gamer's opinion, the X-Box is going to lose money for a very long time, embarrassing everyone who looks its way.

What a dumb ass
Unix is no longer an operating system. An operating system is the software that comes with a computer (or OS distribution) that programmers and users need to make themselves productive.
Unix is only a small part of that.
Last I checked an OS is:
"The three main purposes of an operating system are to attempt to schedule computational activities to ensure good performance of the computing system, they provide a convenient environment for the development and execution of programs, and convenience for the user. )
An operating system has four components. These four components are Resource Management, Hardware Control, Application Services and Applications" - Source Nia_Cial at everything2.com
So 1) this author is WAY off 2) even if Unix is defined by his diluted defination he is still WAY OFF!
I got 5-10 "OS" distrubation in the back room. If the "OS" is defined by "additional applications and functions that are required for it to run" then his statement: "Unix is only a small part of that" is way off, this guy is a dumb ass.
SuSE Linux 6.3 - 6 CDs PACKED with "Additional applications"
Freinds "custom" debain build 7 CD PACKED
Solaris 7 - 1 "os" disk and 2 CD's packed with applications (software disk 1 & 2)
Windows 95 b - 1 CD, half of which is taken up by a Weezer MPG movie
Windows 98 SE - 1 CD, half empty
MacOS 7.0 - 1 CD, half empty
So by this authors OWN defination he is complety fscking wrong, by the correct defination he is complely fscking wrong. Who is the fuck that gave him web space to put up this shit?
I am really starting to hate Mac users.

so it's gonna be nice and painful if bush wins?
isn't our society currently 'graying' where more people are aging over 65 than are being born? so there are alot of old people who think the same way bush does right? and how many of these new-fangled 18 year olds are going to vote? i know i am, but i'm voting for nader, which according to everyone is a vote for bush. but i refuse to be intimidated damn you! i will vote for who i want to vote without fear.
clinton has mentioned the digital divide more than once, right? does that mean gore wants to address it? i haven't heard much from him one way or the other. if the internet turns people's hearts dark, i doubt bush wants to increase internet access. and jamie's gonna have a field day when the fuckers come to censor his library ^^;;
bush is an idiot who thinks the net turns us 'dark' right? what's his proof? he was probably reading slashdot with a threshold of -1, the way moderators should be. hm. i wonder how many political candidates are slashdot moderators. as for lieberman, here is the appropriate penny-arcade: http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2000-10 -09

Re:All Moderation is flawedIt depends what you intend to use user moderation for. User moderation will simply reward the current popular ideas. It will penalise anything controversial. If this is what you want, it works great. However, user moderation is not a substitute for editorial control. If Rob wants this site to go in a particular direction, he will need to direct it. If he wishes it to remain a geek-flavoured study into social behaviour then steady-as-she-goes.

Re:Here we go again..3DFx is probably too smart to go into a deal with Apple..
Even given their comments at E3? It certainly seems to me that 3dfx wants to pursue the Macintosh market.
There was a petition circulating at Accelerate Your Mac pleading with Apple to do what 3dfx was asking: make the Voodoo4 and 5 build-to-order options in the G4 towers. This is possibly more likely now that Apple is angry at ATI.
Theoretically, I suppose that this could be done with the Cube as well, but I wonder about heat concerns.

Re:constitutional? Yes.There is just one thing you missed. Indiana is one of the most conservitive state in the US (I know, I have the misfortune to live here). There is no special reason for it, just that people that live in the country tend to by conservitive, and Indiana has only one large city, Indianapolis. If you remember the last clinton election, all of the north east corner of the US was for clinton. But right smack in the middle was this ugly glaring red smeer of Indiana voting for Bush.
Keep in mind, Indiana had a Democrat governor for a long time and he was one of the most popular we had (cut the damn vehicle excise tax for one thing). He's now the U.S. Senator.
Indianapolis itself is actually a little on the liberal side, and so's Gary.
BTW, check out this Penny Arcade Comic on the subject. Having gone to school in Terrible Hole, I got more than a good laugh out of it.
