I totally agree. And even if someone is crazy enough to pay that much for sex.com, he's gonna have to know how to make money out of it. With all this free porn available on the net, anyone trying to make money out of porn will have more and more difficulties, except with VERY HARDCORE users who will always be willing to pay for higher quality videos, false interactions (sex chat) and all that stuff...

Don't be such a prude, or perhaps feign innocence. Embrace it.

This is nothing new... our company has been a defendant in "wrongful death" lawsuites twice now.

In Joe James, et al. v. Meow Media, Inc., et al. (aka the Paducah, KY school shootings),
the defendants claimed that their son visited Persian Kitty's Adult Links
[Note: Adult Content], where they viewed violent pornography which caused them to
shoot fellow high school students.

As this national fad spread, we were then sued by the defendants in what's popularly known
as the Columbine High School Shootings. Again, we had to defend ourselves... in parallel. Two
lawsuits, in two different states... and the unsuccessful [by plaintiffs] appeals that followed.

Fortunately, we were able to use the ruling (after plaintiffs had exhausted all appeals) in the
first case to get the second case dismissed, late in the game. By then, we had already paid out
six figures in legal fees alone. Good thing we're in the "online adult entertainment" business,
or else we might have been put out of business.

To those who say "so... sue them back!" -- I strongly recommend you learn more about our
legal system (through accredited sources, not word of mouth). I can see the newspaper headlines
now... "Family may lose home because of Pornographer's lawsuit, after having recently
lost their son."

Actually, yes, there is a LOT of money to be made. But that being said, it's not an easy business to run. There's a lot of competition out there. Like any other industry the 80/20 rule applies. 20% of all companies probably make 80% of the money. A lot of people give it a shot, but then back out when they realize that like anything else, it does take a LOT of work to make it profitable. People like Persian Kitty and Green Guy were average people who just persevered, and now they're millionaries. So yes, it's possible, but it's not easy. Trust me, it takes a LOT of work, a LOT of luck, and a little something different to make a buck.

Micropayments are an outgrowth of the push for creator's rights. Having full control over one's work is really what McCloud is asking for, isn't he? He wants to cut out the middleman and deliver artistic content over the web, but he's complaining that he doesn't make enough money doing it.

McCloud steps right on the main issue with the Napster reference. The value of something is tied directly to its availability. Just as I wouldn't join any Porn-o-the-Month clubs because I can get the crusty scrapings of those sites for free at their affiliates' sites, I seriously doubt that people will pay even miniscule amounts for what can be had for free. Why buy e-music when you can get it from Napster or Gnutella for free? Why pay for porn when sites like Persian Kitty list hundreds of free sites? Why pay a quarter to read something that I've already read?

The argument can be made, of course, that people do in fact sign up for porn site memberships, and it is perhaps the most profitable industry on the web. The response to this is that porn is PORN . It is an anomolous industry that thrives on personal privacy, whereas comic books or e-books (e.g. The Plant) are not things that people are reluctant to buy in person.

McCloud is dreaming if he thinks users will pay for content. Even a micropayment is a micro too much. I'll be glad to be proven wrong, though

Interface:While some users prefer the limited functionality of the Cat, the variety of commands available with Dogs is more suitable for the "hacker".

Applications:Most cats will retrieve all sorts of dead animals for you; Dogs can be used as NT Admins for your home network.

Internet:Though Fetch (for MacOS) and Lycos figure prominently on the Internet scene, neither of those compare to the fame of Persian Kitty (that's not an endorsement).

As for myself, I'm tired of living with animals.
