Re:Why Penny Arcade?
I don't know why, but I just can't get to like Sluggy that much.
Another online geek/nerd comic is UserFriendly, and I think it's much better. Altough it's been a while since the last "awesome" strip.
And of course, even another option for those with a more "academic" background would be Piled Higher& Deeper, a comic about grad students life (or lack of :) ). As I am a PhD student right now, I identify with this a lot. If you are a grad student, you should definitely check it out. -
Web/book combosThere are some excellent comics online which are also available in "dead wood" format. UserFriendly, of course (who doesn't know about it on
/.?) (nice punctuation sequence there, uh?), Piled Higher and Deeper ...An interesting one is Girl Genius Online. This was a traditional printed comic. Recently, the authors put up the website. New pages are put online on MWF, and when a volume willl be complete it'll get published in paper format. At the same time, they're rehashing their old issues (GG101), again one page every other workday.
Talk about the best of both worlds

They can adapt screenplays from...
... this guy, who summarizes life as a scientist (well, a young scientist) pretty darn well.

it wasn't Slackenerny graduating... it was Apple switching!
Oh god! -
Webcomics that are funny:
- Real life
- Phd (perhaps not as funny to non grad students)
- Applegeeks

Re:Yeah, but are they FUNNY?http://www.phdcomics.com/
You need to appreciate the irony to understand the humor there. Very well drawn and favorite of many graduate students.

Re:What?
You don't know many, eh?
Some of them make the fact that they're gaming comic websites a bit more known, sure. But all those sites I go to primarily for the comics. All of them don't have the full comic on the front page.
Now, clanbob (specifically the life of riley) comic ISN'T the entire focus of the site. it's just a bunch of friends, one of them happens to draw a comic. The others use it for whatever they want, as far as I can tell. But penny-arcade has a link to the comic in each of tycho's posts about it, and a 'Latest Comic' link right at the top. It's fair to include all of these as being similar, I think. -
If Geek happens to be a grad student...
The first dead-tree collection of Jorge Cham's "Piled Higher and Deeper", put out a year or two ago. Good for laughing/crying about the academic life or scaring away potential grad students.
Disclaimer: I'm just a lazy AC, not a shill! -
PhD baby
Can't find a job? Go to grad school. Get paid around $20k (30 with an NSF fellowship, although your chances of getting one are around 1 in 11), work your ass off, get fed up with your far superior peers and then get a job as an assistant professor who has to slave for 10 years before they get tenured! Woohoo! After all, for every Dilbert there's someone that's Piled High and Deep.
What you can do, seriously, is just attend grad school and look for a job while you're there. You have financial security if you're enrolled in a PhD program that pays you (like most sciences), and your resume looks better with the "Master's expected June 2006" at the top. You can always quit (even if your department will hate you) when you find a job. -
Go to grad school
Surely a masters or a PhD will make you more employable.
-
And it also means...
Reading this comic.
To the parent of the person I'm replying to:
PhD is latin, something like "Philosopia Doctorate".
DPhil is what Oxford gives out, a English titled "Doctorate of Philosphy".

Re:Is a PHD so great?
Start here.

Um .. Grad Students?
How about Robot Grad Students?
-
And what about the PhD-student salary itself?
How's that in the US?
Here in Holland, a PhD-studentship is a normal job, and not so much "student"-like, as portrayed in Piled Higher and Deeper.
First-year students make about EUR 23500,- a year, and that goes up to about EUR 28500,- in the fourth year. When viewing this numbers, do take into account that the price-level in Holland (and the EU as a whole) is lower than in the US.
E.g.: as a M.Sc., you can expect a starting salary of about EUR 25000-27500,- a year. If you're in engineering, that is.

Re:A couple of games I thought of....
Yeah! It's damn well time that grad and post-grad students take their place amongst the heroic archtypes! I'm tired of watching movies where I can't relate because they take place outdoors. And what's with heros who have these things called "lives", come on, lets have some realism. My friends may feign boredom, but they're actually jealous of my dangerous and exciting research, right? Well okay, so it's not dangerous...
Remember, these men do research for you!
