Re:the calculator watch.. (Scientific & Hex)
My favorite calculator watch was the Casio CFX-40 because it had a nice complement of scientific and hexadecimal functions. I was totally bummed when mine broke.

Sony vinyl discman
I've been looking for a portable record player that sony put out in about 82-84. It's tall, and clamps a record and holds it vertically, clamping it in the middle. About 80% of the record was exposed, much like the d88 discplayer mentioned at the site. A linear needle moves to follow the groove.
Of course you couldn't use this while walking, or even jogging or in a car, but it was the smallest record player I've ever seen. Does anyone know the model number or have more info? -
Almost unchanged portable
I think you can safely say not much has happened since then regarding portable computers. Well, nowadays, laptops are rarely equipped with two floppy drives, laptop screens have grown a little and are unlikely to be CRT. And the colours of the case are usually not that ugly, but hey it was the eighties!
All in all, I think anyone here who uses a laptop to hack on would soon feel comfortable with that old beast. Given a decent supply of floppies, of course. -
Geexxx
Alright, admit it - how many of you clicked on 1981 XXX-Rated Digital Watch (Caution: Explicit!) first thing? I know I sure did. In elementary school in the 80s this would have been worth far more than its weight in gold.
-
The first Diskmen ws the smalest?
kind of ironic that the old diskmen were the smallest. I always tought diskmen were shrinking. In this1988 model the diskmen doesn't even fit an entirer disk.
-
Re:I may be ignorantthe terms "boomboxes" and ghetto blasters" were started during this period to describe the "noise" that emanated from portable stereo cassette recorders, though the sound quality on some rivalled that of home stereo systems.
-
Re:proximity sharing
I think it's a great idea to be able to see what other people in your proximity are listening too.
In my day, we called it a boom box. Some even called it a ghetto blaster. It seems like the 80's will back soon! -

Re:Precarious?
I had one of the Casio Touch-screen Calculator watches.
It worked for several years -- was great for figuring out tips, etc. But, much like I expect with this Palm watch, it only took a couple of years for the screen to get scratched. Accidentally "pushing" buttons on the watch was a non-issue -- it didn't rely on pressure, but on the conductivity of your finger. You couldn't use a pen, etc to press buttons. The Palmwatch, I expect WILL be pressure sensitive like a regular PDA.
I still have the watch -- I'd love to wear it again as a conversation piece, but I don't know what type of battery it took. Anyone know?
(The manual is long gone.) -
I don't think Fossil did their homework...
So whoâ(TM)s the market? The guys who enjoy the nostalgia of the daily beatings, 0% chance that any girl would talk to them, and the smell of the inside of a locker, because they had a Casio CFX-40 Calculator Watch?
Mike -
A test in the interest of ScienceSomeone give the Star Wars dance-fighter one of these, and his choice of one of these on the other arm.
Which side will be beaten down first?
I predict the calculator watch will take the most punishment. YMMV.
-
Re:Uhh..... who?
-
Re:And the point is?
Exactly... There are plenty of sources available already for such information.
I'd rather just wish that Casio brings back the CFX-40 Scientific/Programmer's Calculator Watch -
Re:I was "THAT guy"
Oh yeah... there it is, the Casio TC-500, baby. Great for geeks who don't want to look like nerds.

Casio Scientific Calculator watchOne of the other cool things Casio made in the 80's which you can't get anymore was the Casio CFX-20 Scientific Calculator Watch. My Dad had one and loved it to death. It had the standard chronograph, alarm, and stopwatch features. It also had a ten digit scientific calculator with metric conversions, all in a face that is one inch square.
I would spend the hundres of dollars it would take to acquire a used one in good condition, but I doubt my Dad could read the display anymore. Vive la 80's!
-
Re:I'd rather have a 1970s LED calculator watch...
Here is the link to Casio's touch screen watch. It had 2 LCD's on top of one another so the watch display would turn off and the calc display would turn on when entering calc mode. I had one way back when, and it was nice. I only wish they would have re introduced the databank line with this technology.
-
Had one of these back in grade school...
It was the Casio TC-600, and it had a large LCD display that converted to a calculator. Perfect for sneaking into tests where calculator watches weren't allowed. Eventually, the touch screen went bad and the 3 "key" wouldn't work, but it was a very cool watch.
