Sadly, there are plenty of uninformed "OMG, the latest XBox! Shiny!" types, who don't give a rat's ass about DRM, "First Sale" or used games. They alone will ensure that M$ will make gobs of money. Especially if Sony follows suit with the next Playstation.

"So, will you be following the President's lead and shop local this holiday season, or is the siren song of online shopping convenience and savings too hard to resist?"

I think shopping local is great, and I support many local, independent businesses with my hard-earned cash. But during the holiday shopping season, I suspect the President's shopping experience is far different from mine -- considering I don't have a Secret Service detail to scout ahead to the store(s) I want to visit and clear out any other pesky shoppers so I don't have to stand in interminable lines with the unwashed masses.
So yeah -- at holiday season, I go online.

The made a land-line phone that did the same thing automatically. The Telezapper. You put one on your line and when you or your answering machine picked up, the Telezapper would play those tones (SIT Tones) before your message played. I had one and it worked well. Sadly, today's call center software is wily and has figured out that particular exploit.

Now I just don't pick up calls from number I don't recognize. If it's valid and important, they'll leave a message.

  8. Re:Curious about Ting on Ask Slashdot: Best Cell Phone Carrier In the US? · · Score: 1

I switched to Ting in August.
The "catch" is that you pay retail for the phone. (not subsidized by two year agreements like on most carriers.) You can stop Ting anytime with no penalty. Even "suspend" your account if you don't need it for a while.

    So I paid $240 for A Galaxy S2.
With 2 days left till my bill, I have used 101 minutes, sent 287 txts and used 60Mb of data -- so unless I suddenly make 400 minutes of calls, send 700 texts or download 40Mb of data, my bill will be $23.
(Yes, I'm a light user -- and I tend to do most of my surfing/downloading when I've got wi-fi)

I've calculated that when I switch over my wife and daughter too, I will be saving $100+ per month over AT&T. Even with paying full-price on the phones, it'll pay for itself in about 6 months.

The bad thing is that Sprint is not a great choice outside of major metros. Up here in New England, I'm roaming pretty frequently -- no cost for voice on that, but Ting doesn't "roam" data, so access to wi-fi becomes more necessary.

Overall, for $100/month savings, I'm willing to put up with a little aggravation when it comes to signal coverage.

  9. Re:Maternity leave. on Sexism In Science · · Score: 2

Women have a significantly higher chance of taking maternity leave than men. This does on average make them less valuable to an employer. My childfree girlfriend hates this.

It may be sexist and not politically correct to mention, but that doesn't mean it's not true.

The statement is undoubtedly true, whether or not it is consciously applied.

However, following that trail of logic a little further -- why wouldn't salaries start to equalize once women are past typical child-bearing age? If companies are afraid of lost-productivity in younger women, by age 40 or 45, you'd expect to see women's salaries evening up with mens. But studies show that doesn't happen.

When we upgrade, I expect it will be directly to "Windows 7". And since I'm the IT Director, my expectations will probably prove accurate. ;)

I can't believe you just lumped the Mythbusters in with Bill Nye and Mr. Wizard.
The Mythbusters, while entertaining, do not follow the scientific method. In fact, when they try to, they often don't get a "big enough" explosion (or whatever) and go completely off the deep end just trying to make a bigger reaction. They do not TEACH science, they play with science. There have been several times where I (not a scientist) could easily see the flaws in their "experiment" which either doomed it to failure, or invalidated the results compared to the "myth" they were trying to prove. Real scientists probably get the giggles watching them.

The Mythbusters have a very entertaining TV show, but that's all it is -- entertainment. It is not an really an educational show.

  19. Re:Exchange 8GB mailboxes today on MS Fights Gmail With 2-GB Exchange Mailboxes · · Score: 1, Troll

Does Exchange 07 do away with the 16Gb limit for the mail store? Unless you have the "Enterprise" version of Exchange 2003, the total of all your mailboxes can't exceed 16GB. I'm at a company which is small enough to not want or need the added expense of Enterprise, but is large enough to be able to easily store 16Gb of mail total. I have about 50 users, each of whom I try to limit to 250-500 MB of mail. You do the math. I'm always after people to clean up the mailboxes. And don't say use archiving. Archiving sucks. Most users don't know how to use it, and those who try it often lose their archives.
If MS would just get rid of the store limit, life would be happy.

I have a large propane tank in my back yard. I think it's a 200 pound one (about 4 ft high, 2ft dia). Anyway, I run a Gas range and oven a.long with a gas-fired heating stove (like a wood stove, but gas)
The tank is filled about 3 times a year. So in an "off grid" scenario if it was wintertime (I'm in NH) and figuring that I'd be using the gas heating stove far more than usual because my normal oil furnace would be out (electrically lit), I guess I could get about a month of heat and cooking out of it. If it was a milder time of year and heat wasn't an issue I could go for many months.
That being said, the lack of electricity would be a far greater incentive to abandon the home than any lack of propane.

I've been playing WoW for a year and my "main" is still only a level 37. I have four "alts" all scattered between level 12 and 25.
I play almost exclusively solo. My two highest level characters are in a guild, but only because it's run by my best RL friend and he doesn't expect me to raid or contribute to the guild, it's simply a way for me to avoid "sign my charter" requests.

Although I understand why Blizzard doesn't cater to us solo/casual players "un-addictable" types, I still really wish they would add more content for us.
