Quake 3 Fotress???
http://www.q3f.com/
I spent HOURS and HOURS playing this game. It beats the TFC version hands down.
I wish people would get back into it. -
Re:What's the point? It's just like every other FPThe first one was Quake 3. The thing that made is so different was the speed of it. That game was fast as hell. Particularly in some of the mods, like RA or threewave or CPMA, it felt like you could run like a bat out of hell.
If you like speedy gameplay, be sure to have a look at ETF, a free mod for Enemy Territory (another free game). (ported from the Q3-mod, Q3F
I know this is my second shameless plug in this thread ; But hell, if speed is what made you like Quake 3... This is -your- game

Re:Gameshops telling release dates : What's new ?
For more info on this upcoming studio, check out their site, and give Enemy Territory a try, if you haven't allready. www.splashdamage.com
Don't forget they also created the Q3F (Quake 3 Fortress) mod.
I miss playing that mod. -
Why is this news?
Quake 3 Fortress has already been out for years. It is not based on TFC, but instead stays true to the original Team Fortress. Right down to the physics, for which they attempted to mimmick QuakeWorld.

Q3F Already Did This
Q3F implemented QWTF physics a LONG time ago..

Speaking of SplashDamage
If you like the work SplashDamage has done for this game you should go check out Q3F. Just about everyone at SplashDamage started out in the industry by creating Quake 3 Fortress. It is a great mod and they are still involved with it. They will be releasing Q3F 2.3 soon.

CS isn't anything special...
I never thought CS was anything special and I can't believe that 9 out of 10 online gamers still seem to play it as reported by Gamespy stats.
At some point realism just became a big selling point (never mind that CS is by no means realistic, it doesn't even attempt to be). We had already seen tactical, team-based, more-than-just-a-fragfest play with Team Fortress (and even before that CTF...). Semi-realism and a world that comes from the brainless Hollywood action movies made CS the success it is IMO.
We've had plenty of great, innovative mods during the past few years after CS, but everyone just wants to play that. The only mods that manage to get some kind of a following are mods that mimic CS one way or another.
IMO, the current state of online gaming is pretty sad but it isn't because there's no innovation. It's because everyone just plays CS and gets on with their lives.
While reincarnating TF isn't extremely innovative (but if you've got a *great* game, why let it die with the old engines? why not develop it further?) I feel quite "alternative" when recommending that people should try out some of those: Quake 3 Fortress and Unreal Fortress are great mods, but unfortunately not at all popular...
I recommend checking out mod sites likeModsquad to see how much more than CS we have, if only someone would play them... -
Re:Quake, still my fav.
if you liked TF, you might be interested in Q3F. It's Q3 based, obviously, but they just released a new version that is really slick. It's the most fun I've had playing a varient of TF since the original.

Quake: The Movie, and other films.
I am currently doing voices for Quake: The Movie, a machimania by Tritin Films. Now, the difference between regular films and Q:TM is that Quake: The movie is completely computer generated -- no demo camming to be found.
QTM will not be specifically Quake 3, but rather a combination of all of the games -- I've seen a bunch of it already, and it looks quite impressive.
In addition to QTM, Tritin Films is going to me making the intro movie for Quake 3 Fortress.. I can hardly wait!

Re:Its about Multi-Player.
I beg to differ. Computer games need the multi-player game just as much as the single-player game. You mention Half-Life, which I'll do now. It's got an amazing single-player game and had a decent multi-player. Sure, it wasn't great but, deathmatches aren't good at all (in my opinoin). But, it must have had something good in it because now it is the most highly played game in the world. There are more Counter-Strike players alone than combining all UT & Q3A players. And that's just Counter-Strike. There is also TFC to account for, adding another 1,000 servers easily to the list.
Now, compare the above statement about Half-Life's multi-player to Q3A's or UT's. They're both DM's. Sure, there's CTF and Domination and Assault in UT but, it's still almost all DM. Q3A is starting to come out with some good MODs like q3f and WFA. Now, compare Half-Life's already established MODs. Counter-Strike, TFC, and the rising Firearms. This should be enough proof that Half-Life's multi-player is by far, superior.
Id software can make a good multi-player game as can be seen in Q3A. They can also make a good single-player game as can be seen in almost all of Id's other games. Hopefully, Id software will put the two together to make one outstanding game.
Have a nice day, -
Quake 3 Fortress
Rocket Arena was really fun for Q2, and this promises to be a great deathmatch mod with Q3A's superb engine.
For a little more strategy and teamplay, check out Quake 3 Fortress . This is a port of QuakeWorld TeamFortress (some of you may have experienced the bastardized "Team Fortress Classic" in Half-Life) to Q3A, and it's very nice. Q3F has 9 different classes of characters battling in teams in several different styles of play (capture the flag, capture "command points", and soon stuff like "kill the president").
I play it more than I probably should, but if you mourn the Quake 1 days or are looking for something new, check it out!

Re:Cost for PPC Systems
I have a 1995 mac system that runs Q3A and Q3f just fine. I picked it up for about $200 (just the CPU). I did overclock it but it seems to hold up just fine. I still love my G4 best though for liuxppc and the Mac OS for quake. You can't beat that case, pull a lever, pop in a 40 gig maxtor hard drive, close it up.
