Re:why has he decided to accept it now?
It was made in the same decade as Starship Troopers, The Phantom Menace, the Look Who's Talking sequels, Highlander II, and let's include Supernova since it was actually reproduced in the '90s, although not released until 2000. Let's not forget Lucas' destroying the original Star Wars trilogy, changing A New Hope so that Greedo shot first.
There were far worse movies made in the 90s.
Then it's a good thing Battlefield: Earth was released May 10, 2000, and not in the 1990s.
The official nominees were Battlefield Earth, Freddy Got Fingered, Gigli, I know Who Killed Me, and Swept Away.
I guess Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2 was too awful to acknowledge.

Re:And the Webby for Snarkiest article summary goe
This is true. The producer is always stealing the credit for "Best Picture" at the Oscars, though. I wonder if any producer ever does the same at the Razzies?

Re:MPAA: So retarded this stuff's actually plausib
those ads probably are one of the major factors why moviegoer numbers are steeply declining.
Silly me.. I thought it was just because the movies sucked. -
Breakout of the Year?

Re:Speilberg!?
Maybe he's aiming for multiple Razzies?

More evidence it's the "Worst Day"
January 24 also happens to be the day this year's Razzie nominees are announced as well!
Hmmm...What a coincidence! -
Where's the opposite prize?Wherever a prize was awarded, anti-prizes where tought of: the golden raspberry(anti-Oscar), ig-nobel prize('anti'-NobelPrize), etc.
Where is this "Anti X-prize" then ?
My personal idea for the contents for such a prize would be:
Prize for the craft that crashes most spectacular (without people, duh)
Prize for the most useless invention on (name your territory here)
Prize for the worst overshoot of a set target (wanted to the moon, went to Mars)
Any more ? -
Re:EYE SURGERY
Gigli made $640,000 in it's second week in theatres... lots of people paid for it, but none were happy.

Sly's Record (OT)Just wanted to point out that Mr. Stallone has done quite well for himself in the Razzies (the annual "award" for the worst performances in motion pictures). With his Worst Supporting Actor award for Spy Kids 3-D, he now has a career total of 30 nominations and 10 "wins."
FYI: I recall hearing on the news that this was a record, but since I could not find it on the Razzie site, I will not make that assertion.

Holy shit
Did all those Golden Rasberries and that apalling IMDB rating not dissuade them from any further releases?
Bennifer is tougher than we thought! -
Re:The stuff of records...
I did. And the funny thing is, in a way, it did win all of its nominations. (Okay, maybe the razzies don't have nominations... but it certainly swept most of the board...)
-
Re:GreatQuickly reading that, I thought it said Gigli Well technically, Gigli did win for all categories it was nominated.
It did win all the awards it was nominated for elswhere though.

Re:Why customer service sucks...
It's been interesting though to see how the overall reduction in customer service standards has given openings to some companies. Here in Chicago, a new cell service came into town trumpeting that they have award winning customer service.
Remember, just because you win awards for customer service, it doesn't mean you are good. Battlefield Earth won seven awards so technically it is an award-winning movie too. -
Turnabout is fair playThe 23rd annual Razzie Awards nominations.
The nominees include Pinochio, Star Wars II and Pluto Nash, among other (very deserving) candidates.

Who cares. I'd rather hear about the Razzies...
Thanks to slashdot for stating the obvious.. Yeesh.
And now, the not to obvious:
The Golden Raspberry Awards.
The fact that Gangs Of New York got nominated sort of cinches it for me. I havent seen acting that bad and Irish accents that poor since.... uhh... wait, I've never heard acting and Irish accents that poor! Ever!

Lucas is a favorite in The Razzies
Lucas and Star Wars II are up for several nominations in the 23rd Annual Razzie Awards including Worst Picture and Worst Director. Atta-boy, Georgie!

Re:Obfuscated code contests?
Yeah! I said the same thing when they started giving out awards for the worst academic prose. But no one listened, and now there are hordes of people going into philosophy and English just to win prestigious awards for terrible prose. And don't get me started on the Razzies, which have clearly encouraged intentionally poor filmmaking. I mean, why would you purposely award bad things? Oh, the humanity!

The Razzies
For those of you suffering from John Travolta withdrawal after reading that article, check out this year's Razzies Nominations list. Hungry for awards that Keanu Reeves, Tom Green AND Charlton Heston can compete for? Check it out!

Crappy year for movies...
LoTR was a decent movie, and this isn't meant as an attack on it in any way, but I think the fact that it got 13 nominations is more indicative of the general crappiness of the movies that came out in the past year than LoTR being super-spectacular-wonderful-hooray. As someone who hasn't read any of the books on which the film is based, I found the movie engaging yet boring. Like X-Men, it seems to be just laying the groundwork for the second installment. This will probably make for a good series, but I don't think it makes for a great standalone film.
A more interesting competition this year will be the Razzies, highlighting some of the worst drivel imaginable, and reinforcing my theory that 2001 was a terrible year for movies (Pearl Harbor, Freddy got Fingered, Glitter...). -
Golden Raspberry Nominee
Special Award: "1998 -- The Worst Movie-Going Year EVER!" (New Category, Dis-Honoring The Worst Movie Trends of The Year):
IF YOU'VE SEEN THE TRAILER, WHY BOTHER TO SEE THE MOVIE?!? (Previews That Give Away The Film's ENTIRE Plot)
