  1. It wasn't always like that. on NYT on Warhammer · · Score: 1

GW publishes a magazine, White Dwarf, which is pretty much one giant ad for their stuff.

White Dwarf (along with Wizard's/TSR's Dragon magazine) during their earlier years, did actualy focus on other games outside their respective domains, since they were originaly gaming magazines, and not specific game magazines.

For instance, our local Blood Bowl league commish showed me an old issue of WD he thought I would be interested in. Sure, it had Warhammer and other GW related articles in there (including some house rules for Blood Bowl 2nd Ed), but he wanted me to read it for the old Paranoia adventure published in that issue as well. I introduced the new Paranoia edition to the group about a month earlier, and he thought it might be a good idea to convert that adventure to the newest ruleset.

But yes, today, White Dwarf and Dragon are just heavily focused on their parent company's flagship games, but since the game industry wasn't in the shape that it is today, it promoted gaming in general rather than their own games.

  2. They do make it random (on some monsters) on Square-Enix Bans Over 800 FFXI Accounts · · Score: 4, Informative

Why don't they remove the static spawning from the game, or make it random, or make these monsters tougher, or stop handing out rewards for camping?

When it comes to NM(Notorious Monster) spawns in FFXI, there are two type of spawns. Timed spawns and lottery pops.

With timed spawns, once the NM is defeated, it cannot appear again until a set amount of time (Such as real life 1 hour for most of them).

The other type of spawn, lottery pops, are tied into the spawning rate of regular monsters. For every monster of a specific type that spawns in the zone, there is a very slim chance that it will be a NM.

Here's an example. In one of the areas of the game, there are a bunch of windmills with giant sheep roaming around them. This area is also home to a NM called "Stray Mary", which happens to be a lottery pop. Now if I wanted to hunt down Mary (which is an actual quest in the game, btw), I would have to go there and hunt down every sheep I can find until one of the respawned sheep spawns as Stray Mary.

As for drops, it's also kind of random as well. With Stray Mary above, she normaly drops some high quality milk that sells pretty good. If you're really lucky, she'll also drop a highly desired bard horn as well (which is the kind of item the Gil farmers/sellers are looking to monopolize as well).

All my playing on that game is done entirely on keyboard. (numpad for movement, arrows for menu selection, SHIFT+arrows for camera control, F keys for targeting)

  19. Some counterthoughts about the article on Dragon's Lair - A Forbidden Love Affair? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Allow me to pick off a couple of points the article makes.

    1. Comparing it it DDR and Wario Ware. While these game's machanics, compared to DL are similar, the main difference is the changing and adjustible difficulty. Almost every DDR song has at least three step patterns, each with their own degree of dificulty, and even those can be adjusted even further with options like flipping the step directions and trying to play on both dance pads. WW also has three degrees of difficulty on each game, and as you go on, they get faster and harder. DL, I see no adjustemt whatsoever. Just random scene progression in the first game and the occasional mirrored scenes. This essentialy lowers the replay value of this game greatly.

    2. Narative Driven titles have taken over. Just curious, where is the "narrative element" in blowing away that lame camper's torso with a flak cannon in a UT deathmatch, or trying to fend off an Orc tower rush with your puny archers in Warcraft? Users don't want narrative gameplay, they want engaging gameplay where they have control over most of the things they're doing. (Although a good story may help!)

    3. Not a counter-point, but one of my own observations, Humor. What made DL a fun game for me and my friends is that it was really fun to see the many ways Dirk kick the bucket. This made both winning and losing a fun element of this game.

    4. And finaly, Dirk does speak in the game. His only words are "Uh oh!", "Hmm?", "Whoah!", "WOW!" and my favorite, "AAAAARRRRRRGH!"

I would assume that the 3d image is generated by comparing the different hues and contrast between pixels or elements in an image. How would this work with animated characters, where most areas are colored in a same uniform color? Would it look like your're looking at a bunch of cardboard cutouts in front of a backdrop?

Then again, cardboard cutouts pretty much describe most of the characters I see in modern movies anyways...

  24. Different cultural viewpoints on cheese? on On Gamers Whining About Cheese · · Score: 2, Interesting
You know, this reminds me of an audio replay commentary I heard once on WCReplays once about how the Korean WC3 players deal with a well known cheese strat, the Orc tower rush.

One comment the commentator made was on the difference between how Korean and American players deal with cheese tactics. He said that the American would probably say "OMG!! This cheese is so imba! Nerf it! NERF IT!!!!!" while the Korean would probably say "Ok folks, there's this new cheesy strat going around. What's the best way to beat it?"

There are two main points that this comment brings up.
    • First, many pro players are most likely accucstomed to cheese exposure that they see it as a normal part of the game. As one guy once said, "If it's in the game, it's in the game."
    • And second, this got me thinking as to how other cultures deal with this. Starcraft is so huge in Korea, it's practicaly a spectator sport. I would assume that many cheese strats have popped up in public pro matches here and there. Of course, not being able to speak any asian languages, I cannot be certain as to what they say about certain imbalances in competitive games.
But I guess the main point that I'm sure others have pointed out, is that the only thing more annoying than cheese, are the people who do nothing but bitch about it.
