Re:Waste of money
You are of course aware that there is an unmanned variant of the F-35?
Yep, found one in only a few minutes. Let's start a war!

Re:The classics...
RC planes are cheaper than helicopters, and simpler too. You get to play with servos and RF, and once you get the thing up in the air, you learn about control surfaces and stalling real quick. Plus, they've got the power-to-weight to do things helicopters can't do (if you have enough time to practice).

Re:This is Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Same show of which *i* was also thinking.
And, somewhere, i read that such a flying sub would be very impractical...
But, here is a (RC-related) link, especially since someone mentioned "Thunderbirds"

That was lame.
That was lame. Even if it hadn't disintegrated early, it was on an arc that would have hit the ground in about five seconds.
Now if they'd built it as a large R/C model aircraft, it would have been cool. That's been done in a 24 inch wingspan model, so it's possible to fly that shape.

Look Here For Modellers Already Doing This !
I have been Flying R/C airplanes and Heli's for over a decade and we have been using technology like this before I was around as others have posted but here is a link to a Ready To Fly (RTF) Trainer plane with AutoPilot Stabilizes in all three axis. Color video transmitters are readily available for cheap, even real time telemetry and GPS modules, depending on how much you want to spend you increase the quality and reduce the physical size and stealth capability (eg. electric vs. combution powered).

Discussed on rcuniverse
There is a large thread with much laughter and skepticism over at rcuniverse.

14MZ discussion on RCU
btw - if anyone want to read up on an old discussion thread for the 14MZ:

Erm ... not saying you shouldn't, but ...
...have you heard about "The Horror of Blimps"? If not, I suggest you read it before you go building anything. Yah.
-
Yes
I know RC Universe has this for at least some months: http://www.rcuniverse.com/buynow/keyword.cfm
Needless to say it opens some interesting possibilities. For example, whoever buys the most used terms first, gets all the traffic, exactly as with domain names some 10 years ago. Also, one can buy not-so-often used words like "scumbag" and link them to opponent's site :) But seriously, I just hope the idea will sink itself as the traffic to affected sites will (hopefully) drop. -
we've been able to do this for years
this really isn't anything new, we've been doing it for quite some time, in the Radio Control world,
(fun stuff!) although, it takes slightly more control than just click on a point on a map.
just check out http://tinywireless.com and any RC group forum -
Re:Modern day control systems....
Sorry, but modern nav systems are way too expensive than simply flying the existing infrastructure. Telephoto lenses, helmet mounts, and the prior investment in equipment slap your idea down, neat as is. Would you let your children play in a playground where one of these things swooped above them?
The liability you would assume in taking an RC hele above a crowd (moving or not) is immense. Perhaps a small blimp-like device would work, but in no way would a blade be accepted any closer than existing aircraft.
Spend one day at your local RC field to see the potential for destruction. I've driven my own planes into the dirt as a beginner, and seen 30-year experts lose the battle with a virgin ship on maiden flight. They are dangerous, make no doubt about it, and they crash a lot.

Hirobo X.R.B Lama
Hirobo is a well known manufacturer of R/C helicopters, one of their model, the X.R.B Lama is a small indoor one, you can see a video of it in action, it seems really great! It works with two counter rotating rotors, and has a cable to get power/signal so it's not true R/C, but still funny, imagine flying over your neighbour's cubicle
:o). There is a review at RC Universe. -

Re:Great...S.P.A.D.'s too expensive? Try a PBF (Pizza Box Flyer!!
That's right, a plane made out of a pizza box. Fly's pretty good too. Read more here and see videos of them flying HERE.
