They shortened AMD stocks
Looks like somebody has shortened AMD stocks. This should be under investigation soon.
From reddit.com:
FRANKFURT, March 12 (Reuters) - German financial watchdog Bafin said on Monday that short-seller Viceroy Research breached German securities law with a research report on ProSiebenSat.1 as it did not notify the regulator of its activities.
Under German law, any entity that is not a securities firm, a fund manager, an EU administrative firm or an investment company that intends to publish recommendations on investments in assets must notify Bafin ahead of time, it said.
It also said Viceroy’s website did not contain information on where the company was based.
ProSieben last week rejected a critical report by Viceroy that led to a drop in its share price by as much as 9 percent, saying the allegations of questionable accounting contained in it were“unfounded and distorting reality”. (Reporting by Maria Sheahan Editing by Arno Schuetze) -

Sorry, I meant video conferencing.
Also, IRC servers can be hosted on Tor, which is not possible for services like Discord. (Who retain everything anyway and hands it over to agencies.)

Re:Nazis have lost their meaning
An insightful discussion of that question:
https://www.reddit.com/r/badhistory/comments/3hi61p/the_fascists_didnt_want_to_overthrow_fdr_because
And a statement about fascism from the horse's mouth (FDR himself):
http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/?pid=15637
The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is Fascism—ownership of Government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power.
So no, I don't think that FDR was a fan of fascism as you seem to be suggesting. Yes, in 1933 he expressed interest in what Mussolini was doing in Italy.

Re:Good
Geopolitics reddit wiki actually has a pretty good reading list for someone who's fairly new to the subject of geopolitics and wants to learn about it:
https://www.reddit.com/r/geopo...
You can't hope to be able to just start reading about the big picture without understanding the fundamentals that underpin it. You won't be equipped to tell a conspiracy theory from realistic analysis. Everything I wrote above can be cross-referenced for facts and found to be true. But I could have just woven a narrative that omits key factors, and you wouldn't be able to tell without knowing the fundamentals.

There's a Reddit thread here.
It sounds like some people "logged in" to a look-alike website which enabled a third-party to login to the real website with their credentials/MFA and create an API key to allow trading. People are reporting their coins had been sold to buy viacoin.

Re:Modern science treat the disease not symptom
It's not the carbs. It's the (mostly dry) PROCESSED carbs + unnatural levels of fat.
A good sized 8 oz potato is 170 calories. 2 from fat. An 8 oz bag of chips is 8oz has 1,280 calories, 720 from fat but has only a similiar amount of satiety. If you go the more "responsible" route with baked potato chips, with 85% less fat, 8oz will still net you 960 calories, 144 from fat. Doubling on the potato (without sour cream, butter, etc) is no big deal , 340 calories, 4 from fat. Doubling either bag of chips is a ~2,000-2,560 binge.
You won't get fat from potatoes as grown. Japan had very low diabetes in the 1950s. Since then, meat consumption rose 7x, milk consumption 9x, eggs 3x, and fish 1.25x.... rice consumption has declined by 1/2, as has potatoes/sweet potatos. And diabetes has skyrocketed. So tell me it's the carbs, again.
Fat used to be rare in nature. Domesticated animals have 7x the fat wild animals do. It takes 1000-1400 olives to make a liter of olive oil, 10-12 heads of corn to make corn oil -- when the Medieval farm was ekeing out a mere 10% caloric surplus (meaning they could feed 10 extra non-farm hands besides internal consumption from a 100 man farm) where was all this fat supposed to come from before the industrial revolution? The modern avocado has 10x the meaty flesh the wild ones do and those were only in season 2 weeks of the year.
Again, where is all this fat sourced? We lived on carbs. The further we go back with more advanced techniques, we see humans lived on carbs. We just didn't see it before because bones survive the ages to dig up, corn kernels do not. We now see it in ancient tools and by analyzing ancient teeth, etcetera.

Pop on over to Reddit where The Donald subreddit has gone nuts banning long time posters as the mods rage against anyone and everyone. It's a slugfest of deleted posts and reposts, gun nuts against conservative zealots, people calling trump obama, it's a grade A gilded shitstorm.

They shut down channels
promoting the conspiracy theory that the kids caught up in the last school shooting were "crisis actors" and that the shooting was a "false flag" (e.g. it never really happened).
Personally if I were Youtube I wouldn't want to be associated with those kind of nut jobs (if they believe it) or bastards (if they don't believe it and are just passing it around to get a rise out of the nut jobs). Remember kiddies, it's not censorship if the government didn't do it. You have a right to speak, you do not have a right to make google pay for your megaphone.
Meanwhile Youtube continue to de-rank left wing media in favor of corporate media (CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, etc). -
I'd rather do the reverse.
I'd rather flash the firmware and then install Cloud Ready, Windows, and GalliumOS. Or at least I would if I cared that much about CrOS. My C720 practically always runs Windows 10, booting into GalliumOS only when I need to unfuck something Windows won't let me unfuck.

Re:I don't have anything to do with FreeBSD...
Well, let's look at some of what is written:
- Unwelcome comments regarding a person's lifestyle choices and practices, including those related to food, health, parenting, drugs, and employment.
So saying things like drug abuse or being overweight is unhealthy, or that anchovies are gross, is a violation.
- Physical contact and simulated physical contact (e.g., textual descriptions like "*hug*" or "*backrub*") without consent or after a request to stop.
This one is a real winner. So you have to ask for permission to *hug* them.
- Continued one-on-one communication after requests to cease.
Isn't this what an ignore function is for?
And there's an unwritten rule that you also can't disagree with the CoC either:
https://www.reddit.com/r/freeb...
This is a pretty clear-cut case of politics taking precedence over technology. FreeBSD is now the planet fitness of operating systems.

Re: Russia collusion
Trump's collusion started with laundering money for Russian politicians, oligarchs and mafia (three overlapping and interconnected groups) through his businesses. Here's an interesting summary with further references focusing on Trump selling a $40 million estate to a Russian oligarch for $100 million. We can be sure that Mueller is looking at this particular example of The Art of the Deal and many others.

In the measure that sets the threshold for "real" AI a lot lower than where you're putting it, of course.

If you depend on the Internet, support #Gamergate
The EFF has been taken over by the exact same people doing the surveilling. The EFF helps ID the people fighting against the surveillance (because they ask the EFF for help) and calls their employers claiming that they are alt-right nazis. EFF's Jillian C. York has gloated about this. Send your donations to anybody else, preferably someone who has gotten awful press from the likes of Gawker or the Daily Beast.
Here is one of the many stories that the EFF is probably not going to tell you about. Patreon just banned a journalist because he outed a pedophile ring inside Hasbro's Wizards of the Coast after WotC banned him for ridiculing their awful marketing stunts. That's the company that makes Magic: The Gathering. Only the #Gamergate people are talking about it. Try looking on EFF's website for any discussion of Unsleeved Media, Gamergate, Brett Kimberlin, PeterSweden, Charles C. Johnson, or any of the other big online censorship scandals of the past few years. You won't find the EFF talking about the stuff that matters. You are better off finding the people who are talking about this stuff and funding them.

Re:That's not surprising really
I'm not suggesting a conspiracy, nefarious or otherwise.
Apple have a notoriously non technical and style conscious user base and I suppose a sealed phone is what they want.
What's irritating is not so much that Apple do it but that other manufacturers see Apple doing it, know that Apple are the 'cool' brand and copy them. Even though they're actually operating in a competitive market and have a more diverse user base, some of whom won't buy their stuff unless it has a removable battery, headphone jack and so on.
And frankly it's hardly surprising that people on 'news for nerds' complain about not being able to swap out batteries or upgrade laptops.
Personally I think it's a shame that MXM never really took off on Windows laptops, but I can see the reasons it didn't. At least on Windows PCs you've got a vast choice of vendors and you can get almost any feature set you want - you could even build a luggable machines with expandable graphics in a micro ITX case. That's not really the case with Android though - the most recent phone I could find with a removable battery that I actually want to buy is the LG V20. People like Essential are launching phones with no removable battery and no headphone jack and wonder why it doesn't sell like an iPhone
https://www.reddit.com/r/Andro...
Dumbasses. iPhones sell despite their lack of headphone jack, not because of it. Even their user base objects, but they're locked into Apple's ecosystem.

Re:A plot twist
Yea, remember that now in 2018 half Trillion usd that we Americans gave to ISP? They now have stolen half a trillion dollars. Maybe this eli5 description will help you understand that companies will just fucking steal the money by socializing the costs and privatizing the gains. No, dumping more money on these asshats will make it worse. To make it end, hold each and every one of these criminals responsible, up the regulations several orders of magnitude to the point of bringing felony criminal charges to the CEO and board every offense, and put the protection back on the consumer instead of protecting and diverting public funds to for profit companies that commit crimes.

Peter and Elsa videos
"ElsaGate" is a name used by a group of watchdogs on Reddit for an apparently Russian live-action video series that (mis)appropriates characters owned by Disney. In this series, Peter Parker from Spider-Man and Elsa Agnarrsdaughter from Frozen live together and go on adventures that aren't always family-friendly. The videos are "silent" in the sense of having no dialogue, and some are violent or mildly sexual in nature.

Re:Let me see if I have this correct
Funny how other phone manufacturers don't seem to have the "phone shuts down when it is cold" bug that Apple had and was the excuse to throttle old devices.
Also funny Apple didn't just have a message saying "Your battery is worn out. Please visit an Apple store for a repair. In the meantime you may see lower performance".
Posting as AC to avoid undoing mods.
You are a either a moron, or are willfully ignorant.
Do about 2 seconds worth of Googling, and you will see EXACTLY this issue for EVERY phone OEM, including the supposed "bulletproof" iPhone 4s and 5.
But Samsung, LG, HTC, et al., ALL have multiple reports of "sudden shutdowns" when battery charge is in the 50% or lower range, and/or the phone gets cold.
Here's some random examples:

Re:Before anyone blames KKKonervative$
I don't believe that ammo is actually restricted, only the ammo subsidized for range shooting and ammo given to soldiers.
Per my link and your wikipedia link, open carry is very restricted and you don't have to worry that the person carrying has a hot round in the chamber, which is all to common in the US, rifle or pistol. These guys had to explicitly tell their members not to keep a round chambered. That seems to indicate it's common, and I personally know it's common from interacting with the community.
Of the three counties you mentiond, Contra Costa seems to have the highest violent crime rate, per 1,000 citizens -
Re:Yes, finally
You're right; but there's TOO much evidence on this guy about his behaviour.
(Over on Reddit, they're asking why it took a former referee to weigh in before they took action; rather than the preponderance of technical evidence. I half wonder if a lot of the database is actually suspect.)
Other games, though, suggest that while any ONE of these might have been somehow a fluke possible, too many happened. (A hacked version of one game removed all obstacles ("Barnstorming") and his record STILL bet that.
So, yeah, ONE record possibly is a hardware issue. This many? There is way too much smoke for there not to be a fire.
-
Re:Yes, finally
Seems like an audit of the machine code and the hardware
They fully disassembled the game code, analyzed all code paths for vulnerabilities and found none, then calculated an optimal input sequence based on the game's algorithm. The only way to get better than 5.57 would be if cosmic rays magically zapped your Atari and flipped some bits in the timer value.

Technical Details & Clarifications
Hi, I'm Omnigamer and I initially investigated this score back in April/May 2017. I performed the reverse engineering on the game code, and developed the spreadsheet model. You can find more information in my initial post on reddit, which also includes links to the Dragster simulator spreadsheet: https://www.reddit.com/r/speed...
Just to answer a few other technical questions being brought up in the comments:
-Accuracy of emulators isn't part of the equation here, since the models were drawn up from machine code. You can argue that there may be some other anomalies in the system, but so far none have been discovered or observed in the wild. That said, the game lives almost entirely within the MOS 6507 in the Atari, which is among the most studied processors on the planet.
-Changing the system clock would have no effect on the end time; the displayed timer increases by a fixed .0334 every gameplay frame per player. A faster system clock would also impact video output, as other commenters have noted.
-The currently available "optimal" solution for in-game parameter of distance is known, and cannot reasonably be performed by human hands. This time is a 5.57, and is about 150 distance units from being a 5.54. The best available human strategy is about 220 distance units from a 5.54. Covering that remaining distance would require a breakdown of multiple game mechanics.I'm happy to answer other technical questions as well, either here or on my Twitter ( @TheOmnigamer ). Thanks!

Might be a bad idea to just trust it if reliability or integrity is a big factor for you.

China has the CPU future
This is what happened after China acquired AMD license to produce x64 chips in China, and acquired VIA's x86 license which VIA got from acquiring Cyrix.
The CPU license pool is cracked opened. Soon CPUs in China will be 1/4 the price of Intel/AMD but has better performance.

Regulate Google, Break up Facebook, Twitter
"Much of this techlash is misguided."
Lets list some top shelf, recent bad things happening at the big tech giants:
- Google is suppressing relevant links in your search results that don't agree with their world view and/or whatever country you are searching from. If a conservative organization that controlled 90% of all search was doing this, it would be wall to wall media coverage, but the truth is Google is warping reality, rather than using straight relevancy to your search terms, now they are also deciding what is relevant.Google must be regulated as a common carrier to protect the free exchange of ideas (a ubiquitous search engine is the very definition of a common carrier), and only a very narrow list should be censorable, and that list must be defined by the government with federal oversight and transparency and accountability to the people, not some unaccountable corporation. For example, sites inciting actual unjustified violence (in their content, not in some random user generated comment), sites promoting violent jihad, sites promoting harming children, etc.
https://www.wsws.org/en/articl...
https://www.usnews.com/opinion...
https://www.reddit.com/r/googl...- Google and Facebook combined control 60% of all advertising revenue on the web, and routinely block content from receiving revenue if they don't agree with it (conservative video blogs on Youtube for example.) No other entity has more than 5% market share of online advertising. http://fortune.com/2017/07/28/...
- Google recently fired an employee who was asked for input on their internal hiring policies. When he highlighted a number of reasonable, demonstrable facts that contradict Google's diversity initiatives, one of his upper level managers leaked his memo to the press and he was subsequently fired (they are now facing a massive class action lawsuit, and more and more stories of the fascist intolerant alt left behavior at Google are coming out.) (no citation needed, well documented on slashdot.)
- Facebook first facilitated Russian (and likely Chinese and others) meddling by allowing false advertising stories to run during the election, then they tried to implement news censors, the vast majority of which were targeted against conservative sites, to the point that there was massive backlash and they got hauled in front of congress to explain WTF they were doing. They utilized blatantly biased censors as well as sites like politifact (which has very little facts beyond the actual name, and is a demonstrated shill for the alt left and not some non-partisan group) and the ADL (also an alt left hit squad group with zero credibility to anyone who has been paying attention).
https://gizmodo.com/former-fac...
https://www.washingtontimes.co...
Some concrete examples of conservative banning: http://www.foxnews.com/tech/20...- Twitter has been caught red handed gleefully describing how they shadow ban people for expressing political views with which they disagree, rather than advocating anything objectively wrong. The political bans have been 90% right leaning people. Those on the left who have been banned have been advocating actual violence, and often associated with the terrorist group Antifa.

Re:Poor Programming
My point is that ultimately, the server has no control over what is running on the client end. Even if they insist on scanning the client machine for cheats (which is perpetually taken to excess and I do not personally allow on my system because I don't trust them either, same reason I will not disable my ad blocker), there are ways around it with the use of a second machine controlling the client machine.
That something is possible means someone, somewhere, is likely to try it. If it works, they'll keep doing it. If you cannot determine that they are doing it, then you cannot enforce a rule against it without getting false positives, such as accusing people of using an aim-bot when they really are that good. If you can't think of a practical way to enforce a rule, don't even make it a rule. It just makes all the other rules seem equally open to question. Certainly you can consider the rule internally, but any actual binding rule must have a means of enforcement or it is a waste of time.

Re:Poor Programming
The problem here is that ping-times of many people are still way to bad for this. On the other hand, it seems the PUBG developers really made it especially easy for cheaters. Gross incompetence at work. There are certainly things that can be done, but they need more than cheapest-possible coders.
Well, it's pretty obvious to anyone who played TERA that BHS has incompetent developers, like this example, or the crappy optimization such that TERA doesn't even work that well on expensive gaming PCs.

Re:this panic selling is glorious
Here's a rather interesting and relevant hypothesis about a contributing cause to the recent downturn: https://www.reddit.com/r/Crypt...
?The TL;DR from the post: The cause of today's chaos is likely large hedge funds using expiring BTC futures contracts as safety nets to exploit the only sure-thing in this market: a large amount of new/overextended investors who are easily moved to panic sell during a flash-crash. -
Reposted article from Reddit
Oh Hey! I saw this on reddit. Someone linked to the initial posting on the dude's site. I shot it full of holes and he actually responded down in the comments. Looks like he didn't take any of my criticisms and is continuing to push it. He also posted it up on
/r/technology.Lemme see... the highlights of all that bullshit....
1) This is hyperbole in the extreme. He's lying to you to generate traffic and controversy. Clickbait.
2) He makes up bullshit terms like "closed web" and "Wirenet".
3) He's somehow trying to blame IPv4 and NAT for the rise of Google and Amazon as middlemen. This is crazy.
4) Oh, and "wires" in general. No, seriously, did you read that line:
It is possible to escape middlemen businesses by decreasing reliance on the infrastructure that plugs their systems together: wires.
I can't make this shit up
5) He mentions "scuttlebutt" which legitimately looks interesting as a way to harvest and cache parts of the Internet when your connection is intermittent.
6) He also mentions DAT, but doesn't know how it works. He thinks it would remove the need for the IP layer. Also DAT would be TERRIBLE for a mesh network.
7) After cutting away all the salespitch bullshit and technological misconceptions, I think he's imagining a bunch of Africans walking around with cellphones
hosting their own webpage that gets harvested by their friends cellphones when they're in wifi range of each other. With some mesh networking to help extend that range a little. Which is a cool idea. The big takeaway from that whole ordeal was when he admitted:
I have never used a MANET myself, I have basically no practical experience with its concrete problems.
I have no idea why he would then write an article about how they would save the world.
I have to agree with the others above, it's drivel.

Re: Finally
LBJ was famously quoted at the time as saying under his breath about the Democrat entitlement programs; "I'll have those n1gg3rs voting Democrat for the next hundred years!"
Sorry, BS, but you can't find one single contemporary source for that quote. It was only proclaimed in a book published in 1995.
Sorry, but you, like many people, are prone to succumbing to the idea if you repeat something you want to believe in, that nobody knows how false it is.
Of course, we also know about the history books.
Sorry, but you ruined your own argument by relying on a spurious quote and thinking we didn't know the rest of the story.

Epyc is basically the server version of Threadripper. Threadripper and Ryzen are desktop only.

"I bet they were instructed to ignore the risk"
I was one of those who called "no way" at first, but just yesterday I found this quote from an Intel engineer. It was originally posted in a reddit thread but has since been deleted - but not before being confirmed by other former engineers at Intel.
As someone who worked in an Intel Validation group for SOCs until mid-2014 or so I can tell you, yes, you will see more CPU bugs from Intel than you have in the past from the post-FDIV-bug era until recently.
Why?
Let me set the scene: It's late in 2013. Intel is frantic about losing the mobile CPU wars to ARM. Meetings with all the validation groups. Head honcho in charge of Validation says something to the effect of: "We need to move faster. Validation at Intel is taking much longer than it does for our competition. We need to do whatever we can to reduce those times... we can't live forever in the shadow of the early 90's FDIV bug, we need to move on. Our competition is moving much faster than we are" - I'm paraphrasing. Many of the engineers in the room could remember the FDIV bug and the ensuing problems caused for Intel 20 years prior. Many of us were aghast that someone highly placed would suggest we needed to cut corners in validation - that wasn't explicitly said, of course, but that was the implicit message. That meeting there in late 2013 signalled a sea change at Intel to many of us who were there. And it didn't seem like it was going to be a good kind of sea change. Some of us chose to get out while the getting was good. As someone who worked in an Intel Validation group for SOCs until mid-2014 or so I can tell you, yes, you will see more CPU bugs from Intel than you have in the past from the post-FDIV-bug era until recently.
