Re:I don't get it
Well, according to this page, types with _t suffixes can actually be reserved.
Even if that is not so, I tend to assume that _t types are provided by the "system", and not part of the application code. Thus, I find use of this convention very confusing, since (at least in my experience) there is a difference in reliability between "system" and application code.
Personally, I use MixedCase for type names, which make them distinctive since functions and variables are all lower case. -
Re:It is nice to have one "/" for my Linux box
This is not a troll: What happens when you unplug the camera, plug in a USB key, and then plug the camera in again? Isn't the camera now
/dev/sdb? And the usb key is now linked to /dev/camera? Or has there been work done to stop this?
Yup, try devlabel. As used in RHEL (see RH's documentation). Works for me, and I'm surprised it isn't more widely known. -
Re:Bogus conclusions.
Using latest Fedora (http://fedora.redhat.com/), I took out a hard drive out of an old PC, and put it into a new one. Linux booted up immediately, ran kudzu (hardware detection and setup) and it automatically got the right drivers for the new hardware, removed drivers for the missing hardware and i was chugging along in no time. Windows required a reinstall.
Many things can still go wrong with Linux, i had my system messing up IRQs the other day, but it was a very specific problem unlikely to be encountered by 99.9% of people around.
Windows comes with a very big drivers.cab file which has all manner of drivers too. The linux kernel on Fedora, zipped and all, is usually 10MB, and has most of the drivers you need. The only drivers I install are the NVidia ones, which incidentally, I also download and install for Windows in any case. -
Re:Minor Point
Silicon Image 3512. Still no support yet.
Are you sure? According to the Fedore Core x86_64 Release FAQ:
Does this release support SATA?
I am pleased to say that Fedora Core 2 includes enhanced SATA support, and most controllers from Promise, Via, and Silicon Image should work for installation. Sil was not supported with FC1
And here is a patch to 2.6.1 to support that chipset. Which is an older kernel. -

Windows doesn't have native bzip2 support, and you don't need cygwin.
You can also get a Windows executable direct from the main bzip2 site.

Re:I still have hope for gnome.
Not particularly hard to guess since it is enabled in everything else...
And no, I don't suppose there is. There was an easy way to turn it back on in rh8 (9?) - fc1, but no more. It's not insanely hard either, just turning one #define from 0 to 1 or so and recompiling.
Perhaps in time for FC3... here's the page if you want to keep up with this http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?i d=81215 -

Re:Hardware on GNU/Linux
X + fluxbox seemingly takes up more memory than Windows XP does just sitting there.
Hope you're not making the classic error of running "top" to find out how much RAM X uses. The total it prints includes your video card RAM... which could easily be 128 or even 256 greater than the actual usage. -
Re:64bit Redhat
I just got a new AMD64 laptop, and am wondering about getting a version of redhat to run on it. Anyone know of any torrents or download links to get a good version?
Fedora Core 2 for x86-64 works great on my Athlon64 box (torrent). I have no idea about XP64, since I've never tried it. -

On the flip side, it doesn't help when clusted file system makers bill their stuff as a substitute for NFS:

Can serve as a scalable alternative to NFS.
Yeah sure, if all my systems run Red Hat GFS on RH systems. Isn't an outfit in Redmond proposing a similar strategy?

Why not use the existing systems for this?On Windows.. Settings>>Automatic Updates, click on the "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
On RedHat strains of Linux, check out the Red Hat Network. Turn on auto updating.

IMPORTANT SIDE NOTE!Reading http://people.redhat.com/mingo/nx-patches/QuickSt
a rt-NX.txt, reveales that this in only for the comming 32-bit cpu's that'll support NX.... while linux had NX support for the 64-bit cpu's long ago... :- - make sure you have a CPU that has the NX feature. Such CPUs are: all 64-bit variants of AMD (Athlon64, Opteron), future CPUs of Intel, Transmeta and VIA.
- (NOTE: 64-bit x86_64 kernels already make use of the 64-bit variant of the NX feature - this patch is only meant for 32-bit x86 kernels and distributions.) [emphasis added!]

Re:PeriodicityYou imply that this change is trivial, and one could certainly get that impression reading Redhat's explanation of the thing, but there are underlying issues that shareholders are right to be concerned about. The previous practice was to recognize an entire month's revenue in the first month of a subscription regardless of what day of the month the subscription actually began. That means they claimed a month of revenue for, on average, 15 days of subscription for the first month of each subscription, and "gave it back" at such time as the subscription expired.
Now I don't know how long the average subscription lasts, but if it's 24 months (to pull a number out of thin air), that would mean Redhat has been claiming revenues two years before they are actually earned. That's enough fudging to get people's attention.
I don't think it's fair to call shareholders "ignorant" for wanting out of a company that loses its CFO, issues quarterly earnings, then ends up restated those same earnings (as well as the preceding 3 years)--all inside one month. Furthermore, this page indicates that about 91% of Redhat's outstanding shares are held by corporate insiders or mutual funds. Does that make them financial geniuses? No, but "ignorant masses" seems a bit strong. Let's just say that if they sold because they thought this news would make the stock go down, they were right.

It's a pretty minor restatement - READ THE ARTICLEWe're over 25 posts, and in the rush to be the first poster, it doesn't seem like anyone has actually READ THE ARTICLE (but this is
/.) ... so let me repeat the key point from the Press Release linked above: ... the Company determined it would be appropriate to stop recognizing revenue for subscription agreements on a monthly basis - a method it has consistently applied for the last five years Ð and start recognizing revenue on a daily basis over the particular contract term. This isn't the typical "ooops, we recognized all the revenue of that 5-year contract this quarter" shin-an-igans that you typically read about - this isn't that huge of change - as referenced in the article, take a look at the restatement table and the net income/loss per share hardly changes.

Your Distro's Tools
Besides webmin, the CUPS web interface and some other nice GUIs for generic, cross-distro sysadmin, I would pick the big commercial three, Fedora, Suse and Mandrake and showcase their admin tools. They have gotten pretty friendly these days (not so sure about Fedora though), and you can pretty much configure everything from the same "control center" or whatever the name. I think it is important to show people how easy and graphical GNU/Linux has gotten. I still hear people telling me "ah, Linux, yes, it is like DOS, you type everything in a console right ?"

GNAA UNITE!!!GNAA DOMINATES TROLLYMPICS GNAA DOMINATES TROLLYMPICS
Horatio Brunswick - Gnaa, Nigeria.
Speaking to a hushed crowd from the heights of a ceremonial golden minaret hastily erected on the main lawn of the lush GNAA (GAY NIGGER ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA) estate this morning, chief GNAA spokesman l0de triumphantly announced near-total victory for the Gay Nigger Association of America in the 103rd Trollympics.
"Citizens, never before have you been trolled so hard. You have lost, as none have lost, and as none may ever lose again. Today was truly the nicest day. Doom awaits you all."
A deafening roar of cheering and celebratory gunfire met the announcement, followed by a rare smile from enigmatically taciturn l0de, which has been interpreted by Top Gay Nigger Analists as owing as much to his own two medal haul as his customarily heroic intake of fortified wine. Following the smile, increased cumsumer confidence drove the GNIA (Gay Nigger Incestual Average) over the 15,000 mark, once thought to be unattainable. L0de then read the names of the medal winning trolls, (Which have been reproduced here, sans incomprehensible slurs and racial epithets) and delivered his already-infamous "skeet heard round the world" keynote address, finishing with a scream of "LAST MEASURE" and plummeting nearly 70 feet from the minaret into the crowd below. His current whereabouts are unknown.

Re:OSS Development too fast?
Fedora Core is not designed for ordinary users. Red Hat states on the Product Relationship page that it is intended for "early adopters, enthusiasts, [and] developers". The release cycle is supposed to be for those who want the latest version of everything and want it now, even if it might break some stuff.

Re:Optional
If you are only doing one install, then just download the network install ISO. It is only 4MB, but it requires you to have your computer connected to a network during install. You select a site from which to fetch the packages that you want. That way you only download what you need.

Good Fedora release?I for one welcome our new Fedora 3 overlords.
Seriously, though, I think that Fedora 3 stands a chance of being reasonably good for the "average Linux user." By that, I mostly mean going back to the pre-Fedora levels of troubleshooting while improving on the user-friendliness.
I just had a painful weekend trying to upgrade my machines at home. I managed to install FC2 on my desktop without a glitch but the first thing I did (and anyone else would do) after booting up --- trying to update the system --- failed because of two bugs (one of which is in rpm and is supposedly fixed but a new package is not released yet).
My server refused to take any of the newer stuff from Red Hat. It is an VIA mini-ITX box running RH9. I was hoping to update to FC2 but due to a bug in the 2.6.6 and earlier kernels which affects the C3 CPU, the installer can not even start. (Heh! I just found out that there is decent workaround posted for this one. Who says that posting to Slashdot does not pay out?)
I also tried to install RHEL Academic Edition (which looked like closely derived from RH9) only to discover that it does not support this particular machine (too bad --- I was going to gladly pay the $50 for updates).
From the news in the past couple of months, it looks like most of the latest offerings (not only by Redhat) have had too many issues to be considered decent. It looks like the reason for that is that most problems are bugs in the kernel (firewire, VIA C3 support) or are related to the kernel (Windows dual-boot issue).
With the exception of firewire support, however (which I don't know if it has been fixed in 2.6.7), the issues that concern me have been resolved. Also the publicity around some of the issues gives me hope that the Fedora folks will be a little more careful with the next release. This makes me think that Fedora 3 may finally live up to the expectations.

Re:Already? At this rate it makes them look unpredictable and unuseable in a business who needs something that appears 'stable.'
The goal of the Fedora project isn't "for business use". If you need something stable and supported, you should be urging people to use RHEL. See the guide here. -
What's Up With This?
I mean it's on the development schedule that test1 would be released today. This release shouldn't be a suprise for those complaining about installing this new one so soon.
As you can see, the core 3 will be done about October for those using core 2. -

Re:Linux?
Can you get a production quality release for AMD64 if you need gobs of RAM?
According to RedHat, their advanced server will only support 16GB of RAM/4 CPUs on AMD64 while x86 supports 64GB of RAM/16 CPUs.
-
Re:Anybody else have problems?
If you read the release schedule, you'll notice that FC3 isn't due until 18 October.
The link to the torrent can be found in the article text, actually. But since this is Slashdot: http://torrent.linux.duke.edu/FC3-test1-binary-i38 6.torrent. -
Re:Will this break Windows XP installs too?
It's test1.
If you're afraid of it breaking anything at all, you probably don't want to use it.
If you on the other hand want to help the developers find the bugs at an early stage so they can squeeze the bugs, download it immediately, start testing and report bugs. -

Re:For the second? third? time?
Dell still offers a Linux workstation. It comes with RedHat Enterprise Linux. They also have OSless desktops.
Don't get too excited though. It is still cheaper to buy a system preloaded with Windows XP than it is to purchase the exact system without an OS. I recently compared an Optiplex 170L (w/XP) to an Optiplex 170LN (w/FreeDOS on disk but not installed). The 170L came in at $593 while the 170LN with the exact same hardware and support contract was $716. Go figure. Mad propz to the U.S. Justice Department for keeping the Microsoft monopoly in check [end sarcasm]. -
Re:What about Windows 2000 (Service pack 5?)Does Apple still support Mac OS 10.1? Does RedHat still support 6.x?
They support OS 9 as well. Red Hat don't support 6 but they still support there last 5 OS releases does Microsoft?
Unless you really think that Toyota keeps adding cool new stuff to their cars because it gives them a warm fuzzy feeling and not because they have to have some way to convince people to upgrade their perfectly good five-year-old cars, this shouldn't come as a surprise to you.
They "upgrade" (I don't consider a new bits of plastic trim an upgrade) them to make people think there getting something new to replace there old car, What they don't do is stop you from getting your repaired by them or anyone else. Why don't they do this? after all it works for Microsoft. Because they are not a monopoly and this action would drive customers away, to there competitors who didn't do this sort of trick.

Probably still RH/Fedora...
So if all versions were known, what would be the #1 distro for hosting?
Probably still RedHat/Fedora. It's quick, easy to set up, well supported, has decent-to-good administration tools, and gives good Karma to both you and your boss.
We use Fedora for both our dedicated servers (to be leased/rented to clients) and for internal use. We theoretically offer FreeBSD installs as well, but no one has ever taken us up on that offer (I wonder why)...
RH's kickstart and anaconda features are godsends, the text-only and curses utilities are more than adequate when needed, and with Yum I know longer have to care about RPM dependancy hell.
Gentoo? Give me my three days back, please.
Debian? I suppose... but something smells "stagnant" to me and it's not just the water.
*BSD? Too complex for most customers, and a headache I'd rather not have to deal with on our production machines. There's very little that the BSDs can offer me (for the time invested in learning all the "oddities" (from my perspective)) that's worth it for me to move over.
Your mileage may vary, but mine stays pretty constant.

That way you will not have to worry about ruining your partitions on your primary disk, as OpenBSD is a bit scarier with writing to your MBR than, lets say, the GUI for GRUB in the RedHat installer.
You don't seem to have heard of the *feature* in Fedora Core 2 to get rid of booting from a windows partition
