Rendezvous with Rama
I'm still waiting for Rendezvous with Rama to come out. They used to have some info up at the domain name, which is registered by Revelations Entertainment and was supposed to be sponsored by Intel. If the IMDB page is accurate, this might be coming out in a few years... but it's been simmering for about a decade so who knows how accurate that is.

Re:Simple formulaThis just in: Paramount announced today they intend to spend at least $200 million in a remake of Might Joe Young to capitalize on the success of King Kong.
Now if we could just get the Wayans Brothers to do their version of the Blackula series...Meanwhile, where the fsck is this?

Re:Hobbit Movie in Four Years?Jackson actually said that it's at least three years away. Somehow this gets translated into "Hobbit Movie in Four Years". Same fanboy wishful thinking as the "New Indiana Jones Movie Going Ahead" story we get every few months when Spielberg or Harrison Ford say something like "Sure we're doing it". There are a million movies in development at any time, and every middling-big movie immediately has sequels planned. Most of these never get further than a press release.
I actually believe that there's a good chance Jackson will make The Hobbit, sometime, but nothing has happened recently to make it any more definite.
I suppose it's about time someone finds the Rendezvous With Rama website again and submits another story how that's coming Real Soon Now.

Re:A great day for fantasyAs is Rendezvous with Rama!
No it's not. It's been in development hell for several years. Every now and then someone stumbles over the website and gets excited, but it hasn't been updated in years. (The Comdex appearance they highlight was in 2001.)

I wanna go on the ride!I've got my collectables, but I have to wait for the Rendezvous With Rama Theme Park Ride. Meanwhile, I'll have to satisfy my urges by playing the Rendezvous With Rama game on my Commodore.
The "both barrels" approach to marketing really turns me off, but I understand that's the only thing that the Hollywood establishment cares about. "Rendezvous" was one of my all-time favorite Clarke novels. I hope the movie goes into appropriately graphic detail about (queue "Pigs in Space" sound fx) : Sex In Space.

Rama theme park?

Re:Excellent news! It was an awe inspiring book...It's very hard to believe that they'll be able to capture the sheer awe one has when reading this book, just imagining what Rama looked like by Clarke's descriptions. To put this in a movie, you'd have to be damn carefull not to lose that, or really it'll just fall flat. There are no explosions, no real love interests. Look at slide 6 from the mentioned site. That sure doesn't give me the sense of awe I got when I read the book.
The way I see it, they'll wind up playing up on the big bad Hermians (cue sinister music), and throw in a bunch of details we didn't see (at least in the 1st book) of the two wives of Captain Norton (i.e., "insert love interest(s) here"). Otherwise, the only people who will bother to go see this movie are the ones who read the book. I mean, what would they put in a trailer that would not only draw people to go see it, but not ruin the awesome spectacles once would witness by actually going to see the movie?
Oh, I also found a script review while doing some Googling, which seems to have a bit more information.

Should read "yet, more animated star wars"Title shoudl read "yet, more animated star wars" there was the ewoks and there was some cartoon with c3po and r2d2 for a while. I don't hold much hope for it being anything more than half hour long toy commercials, milking (or further watering down) the Star Wars franchise.
Perhaps on a better note, and possibly already mentioned somewhere here, Rendezvous with Rama is apparently to be all CGI, due out next year sometime. See here for details.

Artists concept of the spider (slight spoiler)
It's probably been 15 years since I read the book, but didnt the 'spider' have 3 legs? One would hope the artist had actually read the book and understands why it's terribly important they not make a concession like that for the sake of cinema or practicality or whatever. Maybe it's a Python production - "Ramans do everything in 6's" "Uh, threes, sir!".
