The freedom to feel contemptuous of government
It is critically important that every American understand what is happening here. The TSA is a government agency. This is not "vote with your dollars" and choose a different airline. This is your federal government detaining and searching you based on how you feel about them. Your government has announced it reserves the right to detain and search you for any reason whatsoever, including bearing the expression of one who holds that same government and its agents, for these very practices, in utter contempt.
And through your hard earned tax dollars you are funding them and their cronies to do this to you. As much as 60% of your working life will be directly to fund the government that is doing this to you, that government whose agents are shouting and you with a boot on your head, with your trousers dropped, and an agent's cold hand - big brother's hand - telling you it is for your own good, that if you would only fall in line they would not have to do this.
But don't worry, so long as you smile, keep your mouth shut, and fall in line, you won't be bothered, citizen.
It is only a matter of time if we do not dramatically reverse course now. If this presidential election comes down to a race between Hillary or Obama and Giuliani, Thompson, or Romney, the decline will only accelerate. If we do not reverse course now, in 8 years we will very likely have passed the point of no return, where these policies are accepted by the populous, where the police state propaganda has thoroughly subdued them, and we will be unable to rouse them to fight.
To avoid this fate you must act now. Get behind a candidate who you can count on not to sell us out to the military industrial complex, who you can count on to wrest us free from the interests of large bankers and financial institutions, who you can count on to defend the letter of the Constitution in its original spirit, for which the blood of many patriots was shed.
And that doesn't mean just posting on internet forums. That means volunteering to travel to, to write to, and to call citizens in the primary states. If we do not get wins for these candidates in the primaries, it will be as good as lost. Now is the time to act to defend your freedom, or you will soon find it has been taken from you and it will be too late. http://www.ronpaul2008.com/ -
It's government schooling
"Public" (i.e. government-monopoly) school will never be good at teaching the advanced students. Most government schools meet the minimum standards, because that's all they're required to do. There is rarely an economic incentive to do better.
There are a few exceptions. In SC when I was in high school, the schools got $400 extra for each student in an AP class, so, with all other things being equal, schools were motivated to teach AP classes, and get the students to take them (and do well, since the schools looked bad, if their scores were low).
In general though, without the incentives, innovation, and risks that a profit-motivated free market would bring to schooling, American schools will continue to suck. But at least we have good high school football teams (schools have a strong motivation to have good sports teams...they bring in more money, and boasting rights).
Austrian Economic theory (founded by Ludwig von Mises) explains why government-monopoly services (education, the postal system, social security, etc.) fail to provide a quality product at a competitive price.
If you want to improve American education, then vote for Ron Paul. Not only will he get the Feds out of local education, but he's also the most pro-internet freedom candidate since...well...ever!

Re:Fiat currencies have several problems.[Fiat currency] allows the government the ability to pay for anything it likes which leads to the inevitable increases in power of the political elite, the banks and the largest multinational corporations which service government interests. Which is exactly why all of us should vote for Ron Paul in the primaries and general election next year. He is an advocate for returning U.S. currency to the gold standard. He has written and given countless speeches about gold and our monetary policy. He even predicted the dot-com bubble three years before it happened (see the 4th paragraph in this article). If there is one candidate who can help stop the runaway borrowing and spending in Washington, this guy is it.

Democrats will not protect your freedom either
What more evidence do we need? Democrats were swept into power on the promise to get us out of Iraq, to restore our liberties that they and their Republican colleagues sold out wholesale after 9/11, and to bring this corrupt administration to justice.
The enemy of your enemy is not your friend.
We are still in Iraq and there is no end in sight. Rather than having the backbone to bringing the measure to withdraw back to the floor again and again to push it through, and continue to push their campaign promises in the media, they have effectively given up on the issue, whining to their supporters and the media that it is too hard.
And now these Democrats are actively working with this administration, the same administration they told us is the most corrupt and secretive in history, to sell out yet more of our freedoms, to give yet more power to this president and the executive branch.
They are, our representatives, nearly every one of them, pathetic, spineless, schmucks. They have betrayed us all once again.
And it should come as no surprise, because these are the same Democrats and Republicans who sold us out by writing the president a blank check in Iraq. The same Democrats and Republicans who sold out our liberties by signing onto the biggest forfeiture of our liberties since the establishment of this nation. The same Democrats and Republicans who proudly signed the bill granting retroactive immunity to prosecution for every military and government agent who has tortured, kidnapped, and committed atrocities in our name.
We must act now to take back our liberties, our dignity, and our good name in the world; it is the most important cause of this age. If 2008 leaves us with Giuliani, Hillary, McCain, Obama, Romney, or any of their ilk in office, we will see more of the same and worse, and it will be too late. It will be too late to restore the freedoms that have been stolen from us. 2012 will come and go, and the robbery of the patriot act and the legacy of this administration's unprecedented executive power grab will be solidified in our nation's history and in the public conscience.
If you do not act now, what has been taken from us will never be restored, and your children's children will look back upon this generation, if there is freedom enough to look at all, as the generation that finally lost it all, lost that for which the blood of countless patriots was shed, and November 4th 2008 as the day the Republic finally died.
It is only the office of President of the United States of America that can save us from this fate. And in this battle, Freedom has one final front. Your help is urgently needed this very week. Is your freedom worth even an hour of your time? Now is your opportunity to prove it. You must sign up today. Mission information will be emailed to you directly. http://www.ronpaul2008.com/events/iowa-straw-poll/ -

America needs Ron Paul -
he's no Libertarian with his religious motivations
according to his website he is diehard against the rights of women to decide for themselves if they want an abortion. is it the Libertarian belief that the chosen religion should be the law of the land? i didn't think so.....
he says it right here.
http://www.ronpaul2008.com/issues/life-and-liberty /
i am sick of people claiming he is not anti-choice and that he is just "defending the constitution". -
Ron Paul
No need to vote 3rd party: vote for Ron Paul. He is basically a libertarian running as a Republican. The more I listen to the guy, the more I like him.
Ron Paul is Libertarian, but only because the Republican Party no longer is the party of small government, it hasn't been since Ike was pres. I voted for him the first tyme he ran for president in 1988, on the Libertarian Party ticket, and I'll vote for him in 2008 if he's on the ballot. Heck, even though I'm registered No Party Preference, I'll change my registration to Republican so I can vote for him in the primary. Of course after afterwards I'll change right back.

Re:The first thing they'll filter... mp3 downloads
If you listen to his speeches and read more about him, you will see that he is staunchly against any regulation of the Internet. He believes that the government should try to stay out of the lives of the individual as much as possible. Check out his stance on personal liberty. He is also the only Republican candidate against the war in Iraq. He opposed it from the very beginning because he felt that we must actually declare war if we are to invade another country. He basically is calling for a return to a government dictated by the constitution -- namely that any powers not specifically given to congress by the constitution should be left to the states.
If you want to learn more, you can search for Ron Paul on YouTube and see his campaign speeches. I think you will see that he is quite a bit different than most of the Republican candidates -- especially the front runners.

Check out Dr. Ron Paul
The problem is there's *way* too much money and power at the Federal level, because the Federal Government has taken on all manner of duties it's not entitled to by the Constitution, by way of the abhorrent gang rape of the Interstate Commerce Clause.
There's only one guy running for president that wants to change this. Dr. Ron Paul doesn't represent all of my ideas about government, but he's at least got the right idea about how to run it.
He "can't win" only if everybody doesn't vote for him. I know I'm fed up with ill-rewarded attempts to game the system. This time around, it's gonna be principle for me. -
Re:No way to combat filesharing
Damn those Republicans all in the pockets of corporate/special interest screwing the little guys! Err, oh wait...
Both Hillary and Obama have receive $2000.00 in political donations from the RIAA Mafia.

Neither Hillary nor Obama care about your rights (and dont get me started on Bush et al)
Please, look into the ONLY Pro-Freedom, Pro-Liberty, not in the pocket of special interest candidate running, Dr. Ron Paul http://www.ronpaul2008.com/ -

Re:There it goes
It's true. I wonder how many of the people here who always talk about the erosion of liberty in the US are still going to vote for a Clinton/McCain/Obama/Giuliani type candidate in the primaries. (Or not vote in the primaries at all.)
If you want liberty, vote for Ron Paul. If you can't stand voting for someone running as a Republican, vote for Mike Gravel. -
Re:Well It's About Time!
I like cutting of taxes, but, it has to go with smaller govt. spending too!! I want a candidate that is for that, that fiscally conservative, slightly liberal socially....and most of all, respects and honors the Constitution.
As others have said, Ron Paul almost perfectly meets your criteria. I don't know that I would describe him as "slightly liberal" socially, but since he is a strict constitutionalist, he views most of those as issues for the states to deal with (like gay marriage).
He may be a long shot, but he's honest and humble (two words I wouldn't normally attribute to a politician), and he consistently votes by his principles. He's the only politician I have ever even considered donating money to, yet last month I sent him my first political donation.

Re:Nobody's really going to go that far.
Right, because lefties aren't influenced by money? Microsoft has billions of dollars in cash, more than enough to buy whatever politicians happen to be in power.
Corruption isn't just a conservative phenomenon. By the time you get to the White House, unless you end up there by mistake, you're already crooked. The process of getting there guarantees it. I'm sure Microsoft slathers its campaign contributions around so that no matter who wins, they owe Redmond a few favors.
The only reason any politician would ever break up Microsoft would be if they thought they could somehow capitalize on its demise, and I don't see any reason why that's possible. You don't win votes by torpedoing one of the crown jewels of the U.S. economy and its economic dominance, even if you're a leftist. There might be some saber-rattling, but it's not going to be anything serious.
Your faith in one batch of weasels over another is cute, but ultimately I think you're just setting yourself up for disappointment.
Oh yea? I beg to differ.

Re:Patriots, out of options
"So ask yourself, what recourse do you have now?"
You have the ballot box, sir. If you want a smaller government, want to reduce taxes, want to restore our liberties, want to get government out of our lives, want to dissolve the IRS, want to take back control of our money supply, and want to stop the government from selling us out to international agencies, then you have a voice at the ballot box.
If you believe those famous words, "Government is not the solution to our problem, government IS the problem," then you have a voice at the ballot box. Register now and vote in your state primary (Oh how far the mainstream Republican party has strayed from those words...).
Or if you can't do that much for something you feel so strongly about, then at least spend the 60 seconds it will take to donate to the cause: http://www.ronpaul2008.com/. Just $25 will make more difference than your words posted on this forum ever will.
If you want a national platform for your views, this man is it. -
Re:Ron Paul
Ron Paul is really a libertarian who is running as a republican so that he can get into the bipartisan-only debates... He is currently a 10th term House Representative for the 14th district of Texas, and he is a strict Constitutionalist. If he sees a bill that isn't supported by the Constitution, he will vote against it. He has strong convictions to greatly reduce the size of our federal government. Read more about him on Wikipedia or his own campaign website for more info. Also check out YouTube for some videos. He's probably the most honest and least corrupt person running for President that we will see in our lifetime.

Re:Congress isn't allowed to do this...
Which is why I'm going to vote for Ron Paul so we can hopefully get some Constitutional conservatives and libertarians in office and on the bench.

Resistance IS futile - Real ID is coming
Of course Real ID will be implemented. Just watch those resisting states come crawling back to implement Real ID when the feds tie federal highway funds to implementation of Real ID.
Don't think they will will do it? Of course they will, because they've done it before. Look no further than 1973 when another administration that fancied itself above the Constitution was in power (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Maximum_Spe ed_Law).
Isn't that clever? They take your money then refuse to give it back to you and your community unless you submit to their dictates. The only difference between the federal government and a highway bandit is that the government robs you in broad daylight and gets away with it.
I hope every one of you so-called Republicans out there wake up to what your party has done to our country. But you have a way to redeem yourself. It takes a true patriot to state on national television that those who nonviolently resist the IRS and the unconstitutional federal tax are freedom fighters, not criminals. http://www.ronpaul2008.com/. And you can be certain he will fight tirelessly against Real ID, because he has already been doing so for the past 2 years. -
More insanity from our government
This is insane, they are already illegal taxing American citizen wages, now they want to illegaly tax virtually money, insane. If the Americans put up with this much longer we deserve what we get and have already for the most part. And Authoritarian government, and a police state. If you want to stop this kind of corruption Vote Ron Paul in 2008. http://www.ronpaul2008.com/

Re:What about the things being done right now?
I wonder if it will come before Bush leaves office, or if some other shmuck will pick up where he left off. (Giuliani? Schwarzenegger? )
I don't know who will replace Bush but it won't be the Govenator, Govenor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Without a Constitutional Amendment he can't be president of the USA. Personally, of those I've seen running I'm hoping to see Ron Paul win.

Re:Wrong
The *public* *is* willing to do what it takes to cut down the deficit. The problem is that the politicians aren't, and neither are their corporate owners. Witness the internet success of Ron Paul, vs. his hardly mentionable showing in "official" polls of 75 year olds with landlines. His entire campaign is based on respecting the constitution and doing what it takes to deal with the deficit. Yet probably half the people reading this post have never heard of him, and if they have, are they calling their parents and friends to tell them?
The problem isn't that people don't want something different than what they have, it's that they're too lazy or busy to go out and find it, and mainstream media doesn't deliver it to them.
Furthermore, that the average politician won't do something because they think it will cause them to not get reelected is more often because doing that thing would cause non-reelection due to loss of corporate sponsorship than because it would piss off the voters. Especially on an issue like MS pressuring the government to use their code sight unseen, where 99% of constituents won't have even heard about it much less understand it or care about it. -

I was going to reply to you with a long-winded rant. Then I realized that debating politics on
/. is futility defined. Short answer: Ron Paul (R) & Mike Gravel (D) are the ONLY two candidates who even know what the meaning of truth is.
I offer a candidate from "both sides" in the hopes that I will not be accused of being a partisan hack.

Re:Simple
If only abortion was an issue decided at the state level as well....
Just imagine, people who vote for a president based upon just that issue,(and many do, though I'm not one of them), would have to actually think a bit harder about who to vote for, and for that we might actually elevate our debates to a slightly higher level.
That's another reason to vote for Ron Paul. He's pro-life, but as far as he's concrened it only applies in Texas, his home state. Wish it were that way for all of the clowns.
(re)Register as a Republican today and let's get him through the primary. -
Ron Paul would be a horrible presidentFrom his web site.
Debt and Taxes
Working Americans like lower taxes. So do I. Lower taxes benefit all of us, creating jobs and allowing us to make more decisions for ourselves about our lives. (more...)
The american obsession with "low taxes" is a root cause behind much of the problems this country faces today. By avoiding our responsibilities to society, we propagate selfishness and authoritarianism.
American Independence and Sovereignty
So called free trade deals and world governmental organizations like the International Criminal Court (ICC), NAFTA, GATT, WTO, and CAFTA are a threat to our independence as a nation.
Blanket statements like this make this guy look like a loon. How is the ICC a threat to US sovereignty? Pushing fear mongering bullshit like "the ICC wants to try our soldiers" is one of the reasons it is hard to take right wingers seriously. Like it or not folks, we are an important part of the world and we have to deal with it.
War and Foreign Policy
The war in Iraq was sold to us with false information. The area is more dangerous now than when we entered it. We destroyed a regime hated by our direct enemies, the jihadists, and created thousands of new recruits for them.
This is true, but he proposes no alternatives. It is VERY easy to talk about the war, but not easy to come up with suggestions. He needs to work on this. Knee-jerk opposition to the UN is a simple minded and ineffective foreign policy.
Border Security and Immigration Reform
The talk must stop. We must secure our borders now. A nation without secure borders is no nation at all. It makes no sense to fight terrorists abroad when our own front door is left unlocked.
Ahh yes, and overnight put thousands of small businesses out of business. Again, like it or not, illegal immigrants do the work americans refuse to do. We cannot on one hand decry cheap labour and on the other hand demand huge pay increases for janitorial work. And how does he propose to secure our borders without TAXES? Yet another inconsistency.
Privacy and Personal Liberty
The biggest threat to your privacy is the government. We must drastically limit the ability of government to collect and store data regarding citizens' personal matters.
WRONG. The biggest threat to privacy are multinational corporations. Who do you think actually do the work of collecting, storing and profiting off our personal matters?
Property Rights and Eminent Domain
We must stop special interests from violating property rights and literally driving families from their homes, farms and ranches.
This is all well and good, but how is he going to protect families when the corporations come knocking? Corporate ownership of traditional family farms is rampant, and FAR WORSE of a problem than any government interventions, and yet he says NOTHING about this.
All told, Ron Paul just sounds like yet another pro-corporate shill, if he gets elected, you should fully expect far worse corporate interventionism in our government than we have with RIAA, MPAA, Blackwater, or Halliburton. -

There are other ways to detonate explosives remotely. Doesn't seem like the smartest thing to let potential enemies know of such plans in advance.

Re:This must change
Ron Paul is a Republican. That is his party affiliation. Yes, he is very different from the neocons, and that's a good thing. It is also probably fair to say that he chose the "Republican" label simply because it's almost impossible for independents or third party candidates to get elected to Congress. But then, that could probably be said about a lot of politicians. And he currently has a presidential exploratory committee, so you may well be able to vote for him in 2008, even if you're not in his district.
