There has recently been an article about this RPI grad in Rensselaer's magazine. (link: click here) It talks about other RPI grads and their companies that helped to, quoting the article, develop and jump-start the internet.

I'm a student at RPI, and one of the things they do here is require all incoming freshmen to buy a version of the IBM thinkpad T20. Being a tech school, many people have interest in getting a *nix flavor running. Thus, our chapter of the ACM has a project to get a working version of many alternate OSes. They imply that they have a working version of FreeBSD, as well as others. This works atleast for the mid-price-range 2000 model of the T20.

Ever seen one where the AI can beat a skilled human player?

talk to the developers of Terminus at Vicarious Visions. During the first demo they did at RPI those dev's told us that the AI could beat their best more than half the time. Not only that, they (the AI) were employing some very interesting "stalk and kill" methods.

This person had probably never before had a problem with driving & talking on the cell phone either. Then one day she misses a red light, and a little MR2 comes out of nowhere and causes a little damage. You never expect to get into accidents, they just kinda happen.

Kind of reminds me of the IOP (Inanimate Objects Party) my uni had for the elections.

For example, look at this picture of my Toyota MR2 after I t-boned this Chevy Blazer running a red light. My car was fixed, the tow truck driver just laughed at me when I asked if he thought the Blazer was totaled. I'm 90% certain that the Blazer's driver was on her cell phone when she ran through the red light (which had changed, allowed the cars stopped at the light ahead of me to go through and stayed green for me... I thought I'd gotten lucky & hit the green). Of course, maybe this article explains everything - His team also has evidence from rats that exposure to microwaves unleashes corticotropin releasing factor, a stress hormone, and disrupts the ebb and flow in the brain of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in memory and alertness, among other things. "Yeah honey, I'm on my way home.. You know that chicken in the freezer? Yeah that one. If you put it in the oven at 450 degrees we'd be able to eat a lot sooner. Oopps, that light is red, maybe I'm supposed to stop. Alright, forget the chicken, I'm hanging upside down in my car, please come pick up my stuff at the intersection, I'll see you at the hospital later..."

And now he's on Slashdot and Wired... heh. He's off to a decent start.

This actually brings to mind a legal question that most posters probably missed. He's a student at RPI, as am I. He runs this site from his public web directory on the RPI server, something all students get.

Now Slashdot has presumably dumped a bunch of traffic on RPI, because lots of people (myself included) checked out his site from the link. The CIS department at RPI is probably looking at their info right now, and noticing an unusual amount of traffic. This will point them to his page, and they'll notice what his doing with it.

That brings up my legal question, which is:
Is he allowed to run this business from RPI's server? I'm pretty sure students aren't allowed to run businesses with their student accounts; does he have special permission because this is a thesis project?

(and as stated in first reply, it stands for Master of Fine Arts).

And we prefer "Rensselaer", the same as they preferred "Digital" to 'DEC'. Don't ask why . . .

SUV's have a tendency to roll over (saw two SUV rollover's the other day) and to burst into flames.

Almost a year ago now I hit this '96 Chevy Blazer with my car (1991 Toyota MR2). As you can see from the pictures, the damage was pretty much the opposite of what you'd expect in a collision between a 2500 pound car (MR2) and a 6000 pound car (?? - blazer).. Someone else said something about SUV's roofs caving in.. The roof of this blazer did just that, and you can see it in the polaroid on the right (or in this extra-large 5.5 meg jpeg).

Anyways, the lady was in the process of running a red light when I hit her. Serves her right for talking on her cell phone while driving her "safe" SUV during her commute home. That's what I suspect, anyways, I never got a chance to confirm my suspicions...
