Re:Don't worry...
It's only for the Brits, because they drive on the left.
No it's not. Similar measures are being proposed to be implemented in Portugal. And I reckon more countries will follow suit, soon.

Re:Europe has been adapting Linux....
This is old news - in these pages itself, the first time they started on it was 2006 [slashdot.org], and last year, too, there was another story [slashdot.org] on their experiment here. Extremadura, Munich and Portugal happen to be pretty unique/ahead in this regard - do a search on their stories over this experiment.
Except the current Portuguese government decided to start replacing some of the machines running GNU/Linux with Windows. There were even some problems in the transition of the government website infrastructure, because the new Microsoft solution could not serve as much client requests as the previous Linux-based one, leading to a massive downtime which lasted weeks [1].
I don't want to speculate but most probably the new team assigned to manage the government website did only have knowledge on Microsoft technologies, so the old previous system had to go.... This is a shame because they did it during an Economical crisis, wasting money on Windows server license keys and all other associated costs which they did not have before (since it was already running Linux).

Re:Portuguese here...Portuguese here too, and this quote ought to be translated:
O DIAP considera "lícita" a reprodução para uso privado, "ainda que colocando-se neste tipo de redes a questão de o utilizador agir simultaneamente no ambiente digital em sede de upload e download dos ficheiros a partilhar". in publico.pt
Rushed translation from that original article in portuguese:
DIAP considers reproduction for private use "legal", adding "even though there is the issue of a user acting simultaneously as uploader and downloader of the shared files."
This is a great example of media spinning towards the opposite side, look at the full quote from another source:
[...] even though there is the issue of a user acting simultaneously as uploader and downloader of the shared files, we understand as legitimate the use of P2P networks by their users for private use -- articles 75-2a and 81-b of the Code of Author's Rights and Associated Rights -- even though one can gather that once the copy is done the user does not stop being part of the sharing process.
So what sounded like a warning to change the law was actually them specifying that the download vs. upload issue is irrelevant for this particular case. A really strong point, and the rightsholder associations are fuming like mad (especially since they were the ones that caused this following a silly charge of 2000 IP addresses.) Considering the conservative tendency of the current government and the current political shitstorm here, it wouldn't be shocking to see a change to the law try to slip through Parliament. Also, if the EU someday decides for a copyright directive that outlaws private copying (lobbies are powerful, remember), it's bye bye for our downloader's paradise here.

Re:Outdated
Indeed. Still, coming from a Portuguese itself, this is the most stupid idea ever! I got a better idea, why don't they reduce the parliament size to the minimum required by law and reduce their own wages to a sane value?
Did my Portuguese friends knew that the government servers that used to run Linux were just migrated to Microsoft DURING A RECESSIVE CRISIS?? It was for that reason that their web sites went down for several days:

Re:i call
Many European cities, and many elsewhere, have a single website with a routeplanner for that city. I expect many, many people still use these websites rather than Google.
Spot on. That's exactly how it works here in Lisbon. You head to here and you get your route. Now if only the coordination between services was any good...

Re:blame the communist party :)
'Here in my country the "Occupy
.+ street" event was lead by the local communist party`, GreatBunzinni
Would you please stop typing that kind of bullshit here on slashdot ..You may not like to hear it but just because you mindlessly claim it is bullshit it doesn't make it so. If you are interested in learning more about this then go learn about the "indignados" protest in Portugal, and how it has been organized, led and manipulated by the portuguese communist party. And then go on to learn how mysteriously those protesters organized in popular assemblies, organized a vote and decided that somehow those protesters would be a part of another protest organized by the portuguese communist party to be held on October 18th, along with a union that's also notoriously controlled by the communists. Don't take my word for it. Take the portuguese communist party's general secretary's word on it here
But I will say once again that these attempts to hijack these movements doesn't mean that protests such as those taking place in Spain's Plaza del Sol and in the US of A's Wall Street don't have any merit. They do, and a lot of it. Yet, just because they have merit and they have a purpose it doesn't mean that everyone should just jump on any bandwagon that comes up. That would be very dangerous, and it could lead to a lot more problems than those which the protests are intended to fix.

Re:Out of their minds?
But with computers we can get all the upsides of more features with none of the downsides (at least in software), so it makes no sense. It's like putting less books in a library if you had practically unlimited space and low fetch time.
It's not quite so much of a difference between hardware and software as you think. For example, take a look at the VLC preferences. Note that "advanced options" is unchecked there, the list would actually be longer. Now suppose a layperson would like to set up a HTTP proxy, because their network requires one (note that 99% of the human population would even fail to understand it this far). Where can that be found? It's in Input / Codecs -> Access modules -> HTTP(S) -> HTTP proxy. No way in hell would a layperson be able to find that, and not only because of the techy nomenclature, also because it's way too deep down in the list.
Why are there so many options there? Because vlc implements everything, including the kitchen sink, and so the users are burdened with the task of picking out the set of features they actually want to use. It's comparable to a device with thousands of buttons. The UI in the image linked here requires multiple years of training, which most users don't want to do just for watching a video or listening to internet radio.

Re:Insane!!!
I'm Portuguese and I'm really surprised they are using Microsoft tools (Word I guess) for this. The thing gets even more stupid when we think the trial is running since 2004 and when the entire country was expecting the final ruling, the process lagged a while more because of what it seems a Microsoft related glitch. More, (from another TFA http://dn.sapo.pt/inicio/portugal/interior.aspx?content_id=1660098) - they had to call some Microsoft "specialists" hired by the ministry of justice to help with the problem.
They should all be put in fetal position and slapped, then learn LaTeX or any other serious typesetting software.

So fucking what.
lets see, my datsun, which i traded a broken laptop for, was advertized as getting 41 mpg, with later models claiming 50 mpg. And there is a recent confirmed case of someone achieving 61.53 mpg.
My old 78 scout diesel got in the low 20's MPG, which was pretty damm good for a three ton brick on wheels. I expect my project of dropping a 6.2 diesel into another 78 to get similar results based on the specs of the CUCV pickups
these are all 30-35 year old vehicles.
There are a few modified and custom built vehicles getting decent mileage, but nothing stock.
Let me know when 75 mpg is considered to be terrible. Then I'll start to get excited..

Re:The cost is peanuts
Which do you want the UK to be in 20 years - South Korea or Portugal?
As Portugal is already ahead of the UK in any broadband ranking and is already deploying a nation-wide fiber optic network that will offer 100Mbit/s connectivity in any domestic connection then maybe, just maybe, you could not only get your facts straight but also avoid sounding like an idiot with all those racist remarks.
By the way, I'm Portuguese and I already pay 19 euros a month for an unlimited, 8Mbit/s connection.

Portugal was the 1st!
The largest ISP in Portugal who detains the largest portal (SAPO) developped (along with the Psi team, like Justin Karneges, one of Psi creators) the SAPO Messenger it's own IM back in 2004 with the same features plus, SMS and VOIP to land lines and mobiles, gateway to MSN,ICQ etc
... so I don't the understand where from came the idea the Russia is such an enterpreneur country. -

http://messenger.sapo.pt/
you have all that that already,
offline messages exists for many years
file transfer have both p2p and via server proxy
webcam and voip, there is no standard in xmpp yet, but its being made and many companies already use then
you may not know, but MANY products use xmpp (aka jabber), they just dont call it by its name, they just brand it...many of the jabber deploys are for internal use only
one of the best examples is the messenger from sapo, a ISP from Portugal
http://messenger.sapo.pt/
then have their own client (but of course, accept others jabber clients) with webcam and voip support, including free voip to land phones and paid for cell phones and international (ie: out of Portugal) phones, SMS support and other (useless) things that people from MS messenger like... the windows client isnt gpl nor open source, but there is some hope that this could change.
the best thing is that they paid psy author to work for then in psy, to add missing features, so that Mac and Linux users could use it as easily as in windows... of course, you can also use the psy in other servers.
both sapo and gmail might define the standard for voip and webcam in xmpp
as for users, AIM is still the king, but MSM gained alot... ICQ almost disappeared, absorver by AIM, and yahoo is slowly following... jabber is increasing, specially with gmail. AOL is testing a xmpp version of AIM (and so ICQ also)
and yahoo can only save it self by doing the samething, migrate to xmpp. there is no douth that xmpp will be the standard for IM, just like SMTP is for email... jabber can talk with MSM, AIM, ICQ, yahoo, and of course, other jabbers, and so is the only universal IM protocol -

Re:Preferential Voting
You may want to have a look at this system: Emocracy
Basically, for each candidate you could vote in one of the four ways: positive, neutral, negative, or absent. There are some interesting analysis of such method over the website I referred. -

I am Portuguese too, and that is definitely possible here, although not everywhere. Have you never been in a theatre where ushers take you to your assigned seat with those little flashlights, when you get there late? See this website too, you can even book your seats online, for a fee: http://cinema.sapo.pt/

Re:stating the obvious...
Why don't girls get that us men have to put up with the same damn thing? I don't look like Duke Nukem, or Doom guy, maybe close to Freeman but not very close.
It's about whether its a fantasy character that you could want to be, which is what the male charatcters are, or a fanatsy that has been overtly sexualised. Don't get what I mean? Imagine playing a game where all the male characters looked a little more like this and this. Slightly less appealing to you? Well, that's how a lot of girls feel. The characters aren't really a fantasy ideal of what girls would like to be.

In place of the Moon I shall enlight you!
In USA the size of the moon is determined by the need that the text Cocal-Cola written across it remians clearly visible to the naked eye. See:
http://science.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=150203 &cid=12595675
In Japan, the minimum visible diameter of the moon is determined by the height of a klutzy schoolgirl named Usagi Tsukino. See:

Why use a pump?a recirculating system with a small electric pump could end up creating more heat than it saves.
???
Escher showed us you don't need no stinkin' energy-wasteful pump! Just use this arrangement:

Re:I can just imagine it...
as I understand it, the Prius has an interesting transmission that doesn't really use gears. I'm not entirely clear on how it works, but I guess it's a smooth continuum rather than the distinct steps of gears.
It's called a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and is the same technology as used in your friendly, every-day snowmobile.
In a nutshell, it's a chain-driven set of pulleys that resemble a pair of cones that move together and apart to give you a near infinite number of ratio combinations. This maintains a constant RPM level in the engine for better fuel economy as well as less strain on the mechanics and better performance because your engine doesn't have to torque up, shift gears, then torque back into a power band again - you're always in a power band.
If you don't have a Toyota dealership in your area that has a Prius on the lot, check out the Ford Five Hundred or Freestyle and see what it's like to drive without gears.

It looks like they went out of their way to design a dialog that conveys the necessary information well. What would you have done differently? How is this dialog inadequate?

There's a nice overview over what's new in 2.8 here.

Re:Submissions
Well, first of all, (as the article submitter) I went out of my way to make it clear I was expressing an opinion. In hindsight, I probably should have just posted that in a comment, but I don't think it was rediculous to have an opinion to discuss put in a news article. Secondly, I maintain that it was warranted. It certainly wasn't flaming. Look at dialogues such as this and tell me it doesn't look as if they went out of their way to make it look like the Explorer copy/download one. That's not necessarily a bad thing, it helps converts. I think they could have made it a little better, however. Maybe have this in the status bar, or show a directory tree, or something.

Re:new drivers
this seems to be pretty common. newest drivers, like any kind of software, may take a little while to become fully stable.
tell us about it
FreeBSD drivers dont get updated for about 6 months
latest (2nd since 11nov 2002) was released back in 1 July of 2003
I wonder if Nvidia is droping Freebsd support? but thats a nonsense just to think about it. Since we can run manly as much games as Linux community does, and the drivers prove to be stable.
Well for some, after some tweaks around :\
Or they are just waiting for the 5-Stable to came out? But that will only happen in march/april 2004 atmost when 5.3R gets out and that is a bit scary to think about it :(
The prob isnt keeping on the payroll 1 or 2 bsd developers. I manly use Freebsd(oki some loonix too :P ) and what i had paid for my 5 cards plus judging by the every day contact i find in irc support chans, forums/mls or in gameservers all around the world, more and more ppl are using freebsd with nvidia for multimedia/desktop purposoes.
The current drivers, miss some linux supported features , better opengl cinefx, glx1.3, dual monitor, agp kern module and nvidia's ago gart surport, nforce2 integration and device listing, 3d glitches and all sorta of bugs during gameplay, even if isnt a big release, just making small improvements at a steady pace like every 3 or so months will make us smilley and felt that nvidia _does_ care about FreeBSD!!
