In Canada...While record-shopping a few years ago I happened upon an interesting little export from the Arts Council of Canada or something like that which was 8 or so tracks of 10 Dot matrix printers in concert. I think it was all read from text files of repeated letters... it was mostly percussive, which isn't to say that it's any less interesting... anyway the dudes that performed it still have their site up here
interestingly enough, the site is just old enough that one of them has a rant on the viability of the "forthcoming" DVD format and surround sound.

You young whippersnappers...
...when I was a kid, we used to make music on dot matrix printers.

Ehm... Works fine over here. Check your DNS settings to see if you can resolve www.sat.qc.ca. The music download page is located here.

Pixelicious!
For those who enjoyed that bit of lo-fi, be sure to check out the Dot Matrix Symphony... It's a bunch of dot matrix printers all making music (though some call it noise).

Dot matrix music
Okay, this risks being called a bit off topic, but it's so cool (and reasonably relevant) that it has to be mentioned. Dot matrix printer music by this group The User has been around for awhile. It's not algorithmic music, but by printing strings of characters simultaneously to different dot matrix printers they make some pretty interesting sounding stuff.

dot matrix printers?
Oh man, those are still in fashion! Just look, you can be a full-fledged MUSICIAN with these things!

Re:Groovin with the dot matrix
Actually, there's a band from canada, called [The User], that composed (some years ago) a "Symphony for dot matrix printer).
It sounded kinda cool, but...

Re:If I accidentally print an MP3...
It would be better if it did something like this.

organs as in `member' vs. organs as in `pipe'
ah, organs ist it, as in wetware?
...and I already thought somebody made a fugue for laser-printers as a follow-up project to the symphony for dot matrix printers ` -
don't forget
Symphony for Dot Matrix Printers.
Seriously, these kinds of things were cool when someone thought to do one for the first time, but it's getting old. And the "art" was never very good, just kind of clever. -
Re:Man or Astro-man?
Check out Synphony for dot Matrix Printers by The User. It's really quite good, plus it comes on one of those cool little 3-inch CDs.

Celebrate the noise!
If you've never listened to The Symphony for Dot Matrix Printers, you don't know what you're missing. Celebrate the odd whirls and creaks of your system--they help tell you if your computer is healthy, as much as car noises do.
