Author rescinds GPL licensed code from "Geek Femin
https://slashdot.org/submissio...
Reportedly, the author of the GPL licensed text-mode casino game "GPC-Slots 2" has rescinded the license from the "Geek feminist" collective.
The original author, after years of silence, notes that the "Geek Feminist" changed[1] a bunch of if-then statements which were preceded by a loop waiting for string input to a switch statement. The author reportedly noted that to use a switch statement in such an instance is no more preformant than the if-thens. Switch statements should be used where the input to the switch statement is numerical, and of a successive nature, for most efficient use of the jump table that is generated from said code.
The author reportedly was offended, after quiet observation of the group, that the "Geek Feminists" mocked his code, mocked his existence as a male, and never did any work on the code afterwards and never updated to include new slot machines added to the original code by author subsequently.
The author notes that he neither sought nor received any compensation for the granted license, that is was a gratuitous license, and that there never was any refutation of his default right to rescind given. (A right founded in the property law of licenses.)
The copyright owner has reportedly watched quietly as each year the "Geek Feminists" published a recount of their heroic efforts regarding his code.[2][3] Presumably he has now had enough of it all...
The author notes that the SF Conservancy attempts to construe a particular clause in the GPL version 2 license text as a "no revocation by grantor clause", however that clause states that if a licensee suffers and automatic-revocation by operation of the license, that licensees down stream from him do not suffer the same fate. The author of "GPC-Slots 2" reportedly notes that said clause does only what it claims to do: clarifies that a downstream licensee, through no fault of his own, is not penalized by the automatic revocation suffered by a licensee he gained a "sub-license" from (for lack of a better term.)
The author reportedly notes that version 3 of the GPL did not exist when he published the code, additionally the author notes that even if there was a clause not to revoke, he was paid no consideration for such a forbearance of a legal right of his and thus said clause is not operative against him, the grantor, should it exist at all.
(Editor's note: GPL version 3 contains an explicit "no-revocation-by-grantor" clause, in addition to a term-of-years that the license is granted for. Both absent in version 2 of the GPL)
The author reportedly has mulled an option to register his copyright and then to seek damages from the "Geek Feminists" if they choose to violate his copyright post-hence.
(Editors note: Statutory damages for willful copyright infringement can amount to $150,000 plus attorney's fees for post registration violations of a differing nature to pre-registration violations.)

Re:And Jane face it it's been a while
Yet I can't help wondering how much of it is really just people who resist change because they don't want to learn something new.
Probably a good chunk.
That said, init and upstart solved problems in a fairly small domain: starting daemons in dependency order. SMF, launchd, and a few others did the same thing. They sucked to learn, but they gave us parallel startup, services that could start in response to events (logins, socket connects, etc.) and that was worth some relearning.
Things that systemd has embraced into its scope that SMD and launchd did not include:
- System logs
- Control groups
- Resource accounting
- User session management
- Power management (suspend/resume)
- Time synchronization
- Temp file cleanup
- Name resolution
- Hostname setting
- Privilege escalation
- Disk, Volume, and Metadevice discovery
Thanks to RedHat's backing, the systemd developers have a bully pulpit to force policy on Linux users everywhere. Like when nohup stopped working by default. The usual rationale from Poettering and company are that things are "broken" or "nobody needs that."
Right now, on my Debian box, in ~root/ is a script called thanks-systemd.sh. It mostly boils down to:
cd /dev ; for i in dm-? ; do ln -s ../$i mapper/$(cat /sys/devices/virtual/block/${i}/dm/name); done
Because for about two weeks my system stopped autobooting due to some churn between LVM2 and systemd. LVM2's worked nigh-flawlessly for 20 years, and its semantics haven't changed.
It's one thing to change a clunky misfeature (init scripts) in some jarring way to make them better. It's quite another to take over most aspects of systems management, do them differently "just because," and break random things because of scope creep.
I find it interesting that you need a script to fix a specific feature of SystemDeath, but it mirrors my own experiences with SystemDeath and "/dev/null".
It seems like every update to SystemDeath binary "blobs", or one of SystemDeath's libraries, or even udev, screws up the permissions on "/dev/null".
It's always one of those 3 based on my own research, but I won't bother with a bug report to the SystemDeath devs because they will likely close it with "WONT FIX - not a problem, works as designed".
When "/dev/null" permissions are screwed up then "apt update" in Debian fails to work properly; the list of available updates cannot be parsed and displayed using "apt list --upgradable" because the temporary files needed to do that cannot be created.
So I did some searching online and found other people having a similar or same issue with "/dev/null" permissions and their fixes to it.
The best fix I found was a simple script that, when run as root, is used to reset "/dev/null" permissions back to the permissions that it had when the system was installed.
I run this script on every reboot, but I may have to start running it as a weekly cron job just to make sure that "/dev/null" has the proper permissions that the system, not SystemDeath, expects it to have.

Re:Article?
There's plenty happening in the tech world that is still fascinating, if it doesn't seem so you're less impressionable than 20 years ago or just not paying attention. Take a little dive into the story archives and you'll see it was a lot of random junk back then too. The difference is that we were young and
/. was cool in a nerdy way, I mean "No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame." was not only hilariously wrong in retrospect but also pretty juvenile and so were we. In objective terms there was probably better sites dedicated to each topic, but the discussions carried the site.It became it's own little subculture, that obviously the next generation didn't feel part of... we just aged and cool nerdy became neckbeard nerdy, while the random story mix felt more like buckshot from a sawed off shotgun. I mean
/. fit better the paradigm of "I'm a nerdy teen basement dweller, amuse/intrigue me with random nerdy bits" than "Okay, I got job/family/commitments but an hour to spare - do I really want to use it on random nerdiness?" You're probably more likely to find a site or subreddit that's more focused and spend your time there rather than here. I'm not quite sure what drugs they use on this site, but I keep coming back though I'm pretty sure I'd never get hooked today. -

Re:Highlights the importance of HTTPS and HSTS hea
The CA's were never dependable the for profit CAs never made the problem this bad:
https://it.slashdot.org/story/...
Basically LE took what was already a problematic and dubious trust system and cranked the problems up to 11. Analogy: Buying stuff from some guy on the street vs buying stuff from someone who is legally incorporated. Of course anyone can incorporate it does take much effort or prove much - but it takes some effort and means you at least have an address on file. Its a weak check but its 'something'. LE took that 'something' out of the signed SSL cert process.
I stand by my comments that LE does nothing useful. In fact it probably is negative security because it replaces cases where people would have used a self signed cert and verified the thumbprint over another channel. So it has if anything reduced the degree of authentication occurring. As far as just preventing eavesdropping when you don't know or trust the remote party anyway - their certs offer exactly nothing over a self signed one. Basically they just get around the "scare screens" when 99% of the sites using LE certs are really the ones you should be afraid of!

More lies from Alexander Peter Kowalski
Like how he claims the Chinese copied him but can't produce any evidence.
How about when he states that hosts does port filtering but again can't backup his statement which was shown to be false.
There is also his list of "experts" who support him but it turns out they don't say what he is claiming.
This also ignores his out of context quotes he uses to lie by omission.
The problem with him is that his entire reputation is built upon the lie he told years ago that hosts is an effective security solution. It has been exposed numerous times as being a lie and when exposed he fails to argue logically and instead will try to deflect criticism, change the subject, move the goal posts, return to a previously disproved statement, demand you prove you did better than his file concatenator, or just call people names.

You prove yourself a RETARD vs. this
1.) My program stops portfilter in hosts https://news.slashdot.org/comm... 2.) China did hosts hardcodes after me http://theregister.co.uk/2017/... IMITATING ME & "Time is on my side" (Rolling Stones) 3.)
/. users & security pros state the value of hosts for getting users more speed/security/reliability/anonymity 4.) I never threatened to sue Thor SCHMUCK - I only said I'd speak to an attorney & I did who advised I go thru their removal process & I did, then CA falling apart proved my point selling off the antivirus they had that did a FALSE POSITIVE they rescinded to NO THREAT on an old program of mine, period.Wildcards CREATE FALSE POSITIVES (try wildcard myftp.org, not all sites in it =e bad). Hosts specifics don't cause that.
Security pros galore +
/.ers praise the layered security efficacy of hosts.APK

Joogle thieves & hypocrites... apk
(APK) is still right a hosts file really does work. It even blocked a some of the video ads that were inserted into a stream OrangeTide February 10 2016
* Held TRUE then & perhaps now too!
(Unless JOOgle 'changed the rules' like they did PAYING OFF every browser maker to become an AD MACHINE (https my ass - it always gets BROKEN thru & you can BET law enforcement can bust thru that crap (SSL to TLS version whatever anyone?)).
E.G. FireFox paid off by JOOgle & how to work around it? EASY:
network.dnsCacheEntries 0
network.trr.mode to 5 (SHUTS IT OFF)
network.trr.uri (set to 208.67.222.222)
extensions.pocket.enabled = FALSEAPK
P.S.=> JOOgle = thieves (like ALL THEIR KIND) https://tech.slashdot.org/comm... (imitation IS the sincerest form of flattery just as they STOLE my initials too in APK) & they will NOT CUT OFF THEIR OWN ADS (hypocrites) - but I beat ANY BROWSER DOING IT by operating @ kernelmode speed level 1st LONG BEFORE browsers make requests... apk

I beat you to it LONG ago Google... apk
