Where do you ... ?
Nobody asked this yet, and it amazes me.
Where do you guys fileshare?
I currently use SoulSeek and BitTorrent with SuprNova. -
Re:I believe...
slsk has always been the choice of IDM listeners. It's low-profile enough that the RIAA doesn't get involved, but if you're looking for rare stuff (especially IDM stuff, but most of the people on slsk are music fanatics, so other genres, too) slsk will get you way better results than kazaa's millions of members.

Re:Well crap. Help me with a new program
Overnet (formerly eDonkey)
Games, Software, Keygens, Cracks, anything you can think of, just a little slow at beginning of download, but after awhile, downloads from over 100 sources at a time.
DC++
Games, Software, Keygens, Cracks, anything you can think of, just a little harder to use and overall slower, unless you use the 1stleg hublist (http://www.1stleg.com/PublicHubList.config)
Soulseek
Mainly for music. Search for artists, select lots of tracks, leave on overnight and PRESTO! Instant GIGABYTES of music.
BitTorrent
Use other sites to search for files, and download with this software.
That's all I can think of right now, but that should get you started. -
A nice idea but ..

Re:In Other news...
Soulseek is very nice, just that it doesnt have enough users,
and the main server tends to die once in a while for a few hours. It really reminds me of napster.
Check out www.slsk.org
They also run www.soulseekrecords.com. PS: I am in no way affiliated to soulseek, but a donation would be helpful for any project. Maybe slashdot could convince them to switch to opensource, so we would get a native linux client ? -
Re:OK, I've had it
I don't listen to this Sh*t that's common on kazaa etc.
You should try Soulseek or DC++, then.
Both are less popular than Kazaa, but you can find more variety and underground artists.
Ever since I've been using P2P, I've bought
way more CDs than ever before. No many of those are on major labels, though (thankfully). -
try electronica, its a whole other world
awsome, tons of users, lots of sharing, very original stuff, even artists hang out here: slsk

Re:Ironic
kazaa is great for single songs, emule is much better for albums. If you are tired of getting fake files off kazaa then give soulseek a go, it is technilogically inferior to both emule and kazaa but I have yet to get a single fake song off of it.
-
Re:Ironic
Uh, explain to me how Kazaa does music well, because I've found Soulseek to be about 10 times better, if not more, than Kazaa, for music.
-
Re:Random Thoughts
SoulSeek. Ad/spy-ware free. Lot's of *quality* music, and the "Download Containing Folder" option (basically so you can download a whole album with one command) will make the members of the RIAA collectively shit their pants.
-
Re:I applaud your moral conviction.
Its a helluva lot easier to get a CD at target for 13 bucks as opposed to hunting on Kazaa for the entire thing in good quality that isnt the chorus repeated over and over and over...
Use SoulSeek. I've never gotten a 'fake' song off of it (except the inevitable poorly-ripped track that pops every now and them), and downloading full albums is a breeze with the "Download Containing Folder" option. Oh, and it's spy/ad-ware free and actually has a lot of *decent* music on it [esp. if you're looking for electronica]. -
Re:Is it needed?
Is Ogg clearer or cheaper or have smaller file sizes?
All of the above. You get better sound at lower bitrates royalty-free.
Do p2p for Ogg exist?
Not sure about Kazaa, etc., but I do see .oggs occasionally on SoulSeek.
If someone like myself was going to convert my mp3's (if that is even possible) not only would it take a good amount of time, I'd no longer be able to share files with my peers as not a soul I know owns a single Ogg file.
You wouldn't want to bother converting them because the resulting sound quality would be worse than the original MP3s, so you'd have to rip them again. (Since you do own the original CDs, don't you?) Nothing's stopping you from sharing files though, since any self-respecting software player (including Winamp, but I prefer Quintessential) plays oggs fine. Hardware, of course, is a different story. -
SoulseekYeah, Soulseek! Even for free, it rocks, lots of obscure stuff, even some ebooks, movies, etc. The reliability of downloads is awesome compared to alot of other p2p apps, and for every $5 you donate, you get a month of priority downloads - that is, you get bumped straight to the front of queues. It's also cool because it's a little more people-centric and friendly, not like alot of p2p apps where you're just downloading from user3423523661@kazaa.com or whatever. It runs on unix, mac, and windows too (the python client should run damn near anywhere).
Anyways, not trying to be OT, but for those people who aren't sympathetic to the twisted billionaire fuckfaces at RIAA et al, it's a great thing.
-
Re:This of course will force the networks to evolv
Soulseek, the P2P client, doesn't really have problems like that because of its more community-oriented nature. I have about 10 users that I download albums from who I know always have real mp3s ID3ed correctly at 192kbps.
-
Re:Individuals be prepared
Soulseek is full of people that take care of their music. It has a great gtk client. I think it's at http://www.slsk.org but I don't want to check at work.

Re:When I Lived in the UK I Wanted To TimeshiftGet yourself on the SoulSeek network, and look for room names the same as Radio 1 shows... Gilles Peterson Worldwide, Essential Mix, Breezeblock etc.
There's a hardcore of home-tapers over there who have huge archives of BBC shows on MP3.

soulseek browsing
personally (aside from just talking to friends etc) i've usually found it best to browse around other peoples collections on P2P apps... you can instantly tell if they have similar tastes to you and you can always message them and ask if an album is really that good before downloading/buying it.
perhaps i'm just biased by my musical tastes, but i'd recommend soulseek for this... not least 'cause it preserves the directory structure when you're browsing someone's files.
oh and amazon's recommendations aren't bad either, but that's been mentioned already =)

SoulSeek
SoulSeek has been working pretty nicely for me; the chat rooms actually tend to have people with pretty solid musical interests in them, and you might just find out about new bands in one of the chat rooms, or actually have interesting conversations. Plus, I've occasionally been able to find otherwise rare stuff on there.
-
Soulseek
I use soulseek to download music, and alot of people in the chatrooms are pretty knowledgable (if not a little elitist). At any rate everyone has suggestions, i've found a lot of great music there.
-
A few more...SoundClick - a little unstable, but free, and it's done me good
SoulSeek - Windows, Mac & Linux, linux doesn't work perfectly but it's usable.
Ninjatune's Forum - My choice label's forum, nice place to post "got any tunes for me to listen to?" because you're sure to get a lot of good music.
Personally, I prefer to fire up soulseek, hop in a chat room, sort the userlist by speed, and start at the top (browsing people's files). I usually keep it to one album per person, and I've noticed that the chat room names actually DO have a lot to do with what type of music you'll find inside. -
SoulSeek
Soulseek has done me well on the finding new music department. It's windows chiefly with some kind of broken mac and linux ports, but on the windows side, at least, allows you to browse users files and there's also a section in the userinfo for your favorite artists. Search for your favorite albums and browse the folders and download random crap.
Taste isn't a science, you can't break it down. Just experiment. -
SoulSeek via python & wxwindows
fink python, wxpython, wxunix, then download pyslsk from http://www.sensi.org/~ak/pyslsk/. It runs in X Windows. Supposedly it works in wxmac, but only an older version or something.
It's got most of the features I desire. It's much faster than other clients, but I can't tell if it does swarm downloading. Since most of the users seem to rip their own full albums, swarm downloading might be difficult anyway.
It also has a really interesting business model. If you "donate" $5 per month to SoulSeek, you get to skip to the front of queues. It makes it very tempting to give them money, but it doesn't threaten to kill the community by closing it to non-paying users. -
Re:No LOTR Logo/Icon?
I intend to not see it at the movies, but instead download an illegaly riped, high quality divX from soulseek. This way I am entertained, and I also am screwing the bastards who like to screw the people. Its a win-win situation.

Don't want spyware?
just get Soulseek. http://www.slsk.org it's not a polished as kazaa, but it has all the music, all the porn, etc.. with none of the ads, and a version in python
-
Re:Take a look on their website
Personelly, I haven't used WinMX or Kazaa Lite or anythin else since I found Soulseek. No spy/ad-ware and lots of good stuff
:) -
Re:Question
I don't recall which earlier slashdot article twigged me to it, but SoulSeek (seems to be flaky today) is pretty outstanding for electronic music, and no slouch on other styles. Naturally, you'll get more enjoyment out of it if you donate to the author (he's set up a download priority system which gives *major* benefits to contributors).

Re:Transcript of article....
napster was always stupid. AudioGalaxy was awesome. SoulSeek is the best replacement. it kicks napsters arse.
